Fun fact: That 5000-year-old bog oak was just regular oak when this series started.
LOL, Yeah I was a teenager too, 55 now. I like the in depth detail Alec shares with us all, however, sometimes it does get a bit looooong. BUT, I will continue to watch.
Your an ahole but funny stuff hahahaha
now he needs to make 10 more the king need swords for his knight.
Now it's 5000 years and 2.5 months old
Precisely! I don't own my teeth any more!
For those of us that have watched all 28 episodes, waiting everyday in anticipation for the next step, winced at every mistake and reveled in every win, the end piece was worth every second! Congratulations on this stunning achievement!
This last episode was even better than I imagined it to be. Great shots and music choice for an even greater piece of craftsmanship. Well done
Couldn't have said it better. Alec has created a full blown masterpiece with this sword. Always worked with wood myself, but this is seriously making me want to get into metalworking as well. Very inspirational guy right there in Alec Steele.
@@ericblaire8384 not gonna lie I cheered a couple times
For real, entirely worth it! I ended up being way more emotional about this final episode than I expected. What a victory!
I am weak! I was unable to stay with every episode! I feel like i cheated myself.
Absolutely beautiful man. You are an artist!
Wow, you watch Alec Steele

Thank you all so much for watching this series! It has been truly unbelievable to have your viewership. Can't want to make even better projects and even more entertaining videos in the future - in MT! THANK YOU!
Why are you moving? Seems like you have an amazing setup over there!
CONGRATULATIONS ALEC. I am so happy with that you sticked to it so did we till you finally succeeded
I hope that your new show allows you to post new videos on your own. T.V. can, will and has changed so many others. Good luck.
Next project: Zulfiqar Sword for how deep it is respected by Arabs ♥
Thank you, Alec, for this amazing journey to the lands of Valhalla.
Been an amazing journey in the UK, sad to see you leave. But at the same time, it’s great to see you smashing your dreams and taking that same can do attitude to the USA! Good luck, godspeed, and carry on using metric!

Same here!!!!
The Auction is currently bidding at 14,000 pounds!!!! Holy smokes!! that's like... almost 20,000 US dollars! You deserve it for all the hard work man!! It is a sword fit for a king.
Now at 15,500 which is just under $28,000 Australian!
@@GRIFAbyte101 Final biding price is 17,000 pounds, that's $21816.13
Not up to historical viking period equivalent price yet - think of a top of the range sports car as a cost equivalent - don't let it go for under £35000 at the very least.
@@theskyrimplayer9854 ..or $29014.24 CDN
No almost 18,000
Bidding has ended. It sold at £17,000, or nearly $22,000. That is an incredible sum but it is all truly worth it.
Ahhh, don't you hate when you are almost finished with your build and you mess up. But you managed to pull it through. Alec! The sword came out looking superb. There was sooo much to learn from your videos. It was fantastic to watch you in UK and I am pretty sure it will be fantastic to have you here... in USA. Have a safe journey. Slavik Tely.
I think every knife maker know the pain of being so close and having something go wrong... The closer to finished you get, the scarier it is...
Dave Erving Evader Knives that is so so true. The finish is nerve racking to say the least.
SLAVIK TELY you make some kick ass knives yourself sir!
The Vikings gave their specil weapons names, and this one deserves a good one. You mentioned in the clip a fabulous name for it: THE EDUCATOR.
Guðjón Ólafsson love it
Great name
What's the Nordic Translation -- needs to be in Norse IMHO
After some research I found the old Norse translation for educated, Mannaðr!
Oh man, that's golden! Nice
to watch you go from making knives in that tiny shop to now has been a absolute blast. thank you for taking us along on your journey.
All 28 episodes seen continuously. You had me glued to my desk. You are a champ!!!!
Parts 29-40 making a sheath? 🙈 seriously though, amazing work! Fantastic way to send you off to Montana
I actually like the idea of him making a scabbard for this.
Sheath, no. This thing deserves more than a leather pocket. Scabbard would be the way to go.
I agree with Andrew.
40-55 making a case for it
Was about to suggest this, scabbard and a beautiful box for the sword and scabbard would be the very next step
A sword isn't finished without a scabbard.
Alex, how about a twisted Damascus steel scabbard???
Challenge laid down...
That's the kind of sword you would put in the hand of a king.
maybe the buyer will do that before being put on a display somewhere or something
"Prince of Monnaco" Why would the Prince of Monaco get a Viking sword? It would make more sense if it was given to Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, or Harald V of Norway, or Margrethe II of Denmark.
Even the Dovakiin would cry.

@poorly drawn suicidal tendecies Nah, he didn't enchant it. lol
My 5 year old son loves to watch your videos as well. Very cool to see him so interested in knife making at only 5. Every day when I come home he asks me if he can watch more knife making videos. He watched entire sword build and katana build. Your dedication to detail is evident in the quality of work you produce. The sword is just amazing and I'm excited to see it sell for good money and help fund the move to the US.

Congratulations on finishing such an incredible piece of work. Even when you surpassed all your own personal expectations and create such a phenomenal art piece you remain humble. Truly incredible.
This thing is a serious piece of art - I think we all feel like we’ve been on rollercoaster journey with you seeing this through to the end, but boy was it worth it! Can’t wait to see what this thing bids up to, and great work Alec - what a way to finish things in the UK!
Thank you, Adam!
Starting at $6535. I mean he could have spent a year making mistakes to create this thing I don't understand why anyone would pay that much for a beginners' trial and error sword. There are masters who spent their entire lives making swords that don't ask that much for a single piece! But hey... "art", right? Someone out there has got some paint spattered on a canvas and paid a million dollars for it, not because it's good but because it was Andy Warhol. Nothing surprises me
I wouldn't even dare go as far as to call this a "beginners' trial and error sword". Despite the fact that he spent nearly 3 full months (minus a week) working on this piece which equates to about $5700 if he was only working 8 hours a day at $8/hour, not including material cost, it's a stunning piece. Also "There are masters who spent their entire lives making swords that don't ask that much for a single piece", do you have anything to back this up with?
@@adamschaeffer1436 I hope you're not this dull in person
@@adamschaeffer1436 also... why don't you got and recreate this sword ? .. you cant? Then your opinion is invalid
Attempt #3
Alex, good sir! I love the historical respect you have put into this without compromising artistic license and playfulness. I’d like this to continue into your next venture, at your new home and workshop in the mid-west!
In the 18th and 19th century, carrying a blade became less and less socially acceptable for a gentleman. Therefor, swords concealed in canes and walking sticks became more common.
I propose your next project to be - The end all, be all sword cane! Damascus stabbing blade, a sword head to fit a noble gentleman and exotic wood from the outskirts of the empire.
Also, in Montana a concealed blade is legal, contrary to in the UK. Right? Right.
Please! Thanx for being super awesome and putting out amazing content.
I conceal a sword every day
Jimmy diarista did this
silva69ers dude, i know! That flambergh-style wave blade is cool. But Alex would smoke this even harder!
I don't usually comment on anything on the t'internet, but it's a pleasure to see such attention to detail and British craftsmanship that has been lost in the last couple of decades. Love every episode.
Slightly emotional seeing how far you've come! I've religiously kept up with your daily videos for the last 2.5 years and it still amazes me how much you've grown and developed as a person and craftsman. All the best in Montana, cannot wait to see what you have in store for us!
As soon as the music at the end started, I couldn't stop smiling!
So excited to have you in Montanna. Look forward to your future videos in America!!

I read "finished" and i couldn't believe it
Congratulations Mr. Steele. I’m so thrilled with the way this piece turned out, so happy I got to share in the journey, so pleased and proud for you. Alex and Jamie, you guys get your share of the credit as well. I can only imagine the pressure and stress in the workshop, and I’m glad Alec had your support. The three of you are a hell of a team. Well done gentlemen.
I really think you can call yourself an artist, as well as a blacksmith and a You-Tuber . These last few projects you've done have been absolutely phenomenal art pieces. Functional art pieces at that.
Best of luck in Montana.
Last night, in my recommended videos, up pops up a title from 16-months ago: "MAKING MY FIRST SWORD! Part 1: FORGING the Damascus Steel *MAXING OUT POWERHAMMER*" set back in the ol' shed. I stayed up to watch all 10 parts and then this pops up. What a long journey in a short amount of time. A Padawan no longer now that the true student has been forged.
Hey, I was going to use the Young Padawan in a post. Lol, you beat me to it. I have to agree, Alec is special kind of person to grow like he has and he deserves every praise given to him. I'm 42, and Alec serves as an inspiration to me as he should to many others!
Amazing work dude! Best of luck in the US
Thanks Spicy!
This series has made me seriously want to take up the art of blacksmithing. Such beautiful work and care put into this piece of art. Been watching you for a long time Alec, and it's inspiring to see your process and creativity shine through.
..now to find someone to apprentice under
Im always amazed by the quality of the videos, the shots, the editing, it just make the adventure even better. I hope we will be able to continue watching this type of amazing story-telling after you move to the US
You have truly outdone yourself. It's beautiful. Welcome to the U.S. Montana is a great place to be. You will go far.
just as long as you don't get sick....America is dog eat dog in that regard...
Actually no.....you have some excellent practitioners, yes....If you have boatloads of cash....you have no idea about what socialized medicine is....but I am sure Alex does, and will fly back to Britain if he has a serious illness or injury. You also should realize that public universities produce more medical breakthroughs (Canada, Germany, UK) than do private for profit universities.... The US is not really a bad place, just badly governed, this from an long time observer from Canada *where we, like the rest of the civilized world, have tax funded single payer health care). An illustration in point....I shattered my wrist two years ago, and last year fell from a roof and fractured my pelvis...1 week hospital and surgery for the first one, and 2 weeks hospital plus rehab, wheelchair, crutches etc. Total cost to me was the $80 that wasn't covered on my ambulance bill.....imagine the same scenario in the States. I sure hope that Alex is aware of the differences between Ayn Rand-land and the UK..
Denis O'Brien I’m sorry but you are very misinformed on our health care in the USA. We do in fact have the best healthcare in the world. We do have large groups of people coming from Canada for most difficult cases as well as many standard cases. Most often the standard cases come because of the crazy long wait times to have procedures. I live on the border and know a lot of people from BC and these are not isolated incidents. In one way you are correct, it would be nice not to have to pay for health insurance and not having to pay large fees without it, however the trade offs are unreasonable tax levels. Socialist ideas are great for the people that get to live off the system, not for the people that are forced to pay for the system. I’m glad you are happy with your system, just hope it stays there.
Oh dear...
He isn't misinformed. I live here in the U.S. and pay for health care. It is more expensive and we have worse health outcomes on average. Other places pay less in taxes than we pay in premiums by a long shot. Yes, we have plenty of world class clinics, and most people simply can't access them because they aren't rich. People who oppose socialized medicine are simply hung up on the word "tax", yet for some reason think it is just fine to pay twice as much to insurance companies as they would have in taxes. And that's just for people who can even afford insurance in the first place. The many people who can't just go into crippling debt or die if they get sick. That's definitely not "the best healthcare in the world". If we cared about our fellow Americans we should be willing to pay taxes to prevent that, even if it were more expensive. Which it isn't.
Almost everything in this video gave me anxiety. For the love of God make your next project much much simpler. I can't handle another one of these.
7:57 This was almost painful to watch. But damn that´s a beautiful sword. Well done!
Really proud of you for completing this project. It's been a pleasure watching you and your skills grow over your series. I appreciate your work all the more for the amount of times you've gone wrong and pulled it back like a blacksmithing Bob Ross.
Keep on doing what you do because it is inspiring
Oh my, just from the thumbnail alone that looks amazing
If you look at this from finish to start you'll see Alec turning a wonderful viking sword into steel pieces
Imagine the blacksmiths a thousand years ago making something like this
I think this truly counts as your Masterpiece, in the old school sense. The culmination of your skills, experience, determination and collaboration! I'm really excited to see every step. I know I'll be hearing your name and see your pieces 20 years from now.
If someone figures out how to extract Alec's energy they could probably power a small village
It's not his energy that needs harnessing...it is his dedication and optimism. One would cure the worlds laziness the other would end depression worldwide.
@@dannyprice3676 a third would make progress efficiency increase by 97 percent
Not only is this one of the most beautiful pieces of art have I ever seen, it’s one of the coolest. This is something you can take one look at and tell the dedication and craftsmanship that has gone into this piece. It is truly mind boggling to even look at. Absolutely incredible.
P.S. the cinematography that went into this series is absolutely absurd. Especially in this episode, I felt like I was watching an episode of planet earth. What a wonderful job. Kudos

This has been a great series. I would have suggested taking 4mm off each end of the handle and trimming it with purple heart instead of redoing the handle entirely but your solution worked too. I love watching you work. One day I hope to have a workshop that can do as much. Though I mostly do leather work.
Not gonna lie, I’m so invested in this project that I got emotional watching you finish this masterpiece. Well done Alec.
Yeeeeaaaaaaah! 👊
RetroWeld I’m just doing so you are guaranteed to see this comment, cause I think this would be really cool.
Hey Alec before you move take a small piece of metal from one of your machines and after the move use that metal to make a hammer to use, so that way you have a piece of the past with you at all times. Think of it as a reminder of all that you have learned.
Also ps holy crap that is sooooooooo awesome and I wish I had money to buy this.
What a gorgeous blade, I could not be more proud of you Alec, you have inspired me to learn the art of blacksmithing, this only further makes me want to get out and do it. Much love man
Alec it has been a pleasure watching you make this incredible work of art. There are few things in the world that will be around for a thousand years or more and you have created one of them. Congratulations on a job well done.
Dude the fact that you are 100% transparent with your mistakes your honesty your realness makes you an inspiration to watch I love your videos I love the honesty and realness you’ve made a fan For life I can’t wait to see what’s next!
Oh my God... That is absolutely beautiful. This truly qualifies as your master piece. Sooo very long and so much energy into crafting what is beyond a museum quality piece. That is honestly a one of a kind collectors piece of art. I really need to win the lottery just to bid on it. Thank you for allowing us to join you on this amazing adventure... I watched every episode and will continue to do so. Safe and pleasant journeys my friend.
As beautiful as it is, I hope this isn't Alec's master piece. I hope that by the end of his career he's made pieces that outshine even this one. There's always room to improve and grow and I hope this is just the beginning of a series of beautiful works from him.
I think It's ugly like I appreciate it at the same time I'm half way
A master piece is what signifies the transition from a journeyman to a master. As much as I enjoy Alec's work, and think that this is a beautiful piece I would like to own, he isn't a master yet, although I'm sure he will be!
@@SirNomad i do wonder what he will be master of. He is setting himself up to be more of an artist than most other blacksmiths.
It's clearly the work that earns him his journeyman's stamp, and Montana is obviously the Powers moving him into his journeying. When he achieves his mastery, it'll be a joy to behold!
This was a tough one. So much different emotions I got from watching this. I was so happy when I saw you looked into the history to make a correct as possible viking sword. Then I got a bit bored with the vids. It was still nice to see how you did the engraving but it gets boring pretty fast. But I knew the sword was going to be special. And now it's finished I feel it was worth it. Thank you for this journey and good luck to the bidders.
Gert VC, I didn’t get bored at all. I’m a sucker for the details I guess.
You definitely inspired many of us ..like never give up attitude towards it and hardworking spirit ... ive followed every single videos of this series and it's really amazing to see you overcoming from every worst situations.
Good job man! I personally own an original Viking sword. Freakin love it. That bog oak was a very nice touch! Bringing that ancient feel to the sword. That’s the essence the originals bring out.
Superb! A sword fit for a king! Any of the world's finest museums would fight to have this in their collection and displayed prominently! Excellent content, excellent mistakes and excellent learning! You have one of the finest channels on UA-cam. And we thank you very much for bring us on the journey.
I don't think museums tend to display objects made in 2018 by a UA-camr, no matter what the object looks like
You obviously don't know how museums work! Museums display not only ancient artifacts but also modern artifacts that are reproductions of their ancient counterparts. I have a flint knapping friend who produces arrowhead, spear, and knife artifacts that are of such quality that 1) You can not differentiate between his piece and an ancient piece and 2) Museums have stood in line to acquire his work to put in their displays. You should probably do more learning and less thinking!
@@aleciacarpenter7856 yes because there definitely isn't any distinction between a accurate historical reproduction flint head and a sword that's made beautifully but with clearly modern techniques, or did the vikings also have Pilkingtons and microscopes
Holy moly!!!! I've seen every episode since it started and I have to say it was a thrilling journey. Love how it turned out!!! Maybe a knive video next? Greetings from the Canary Islands! :D
Alec, I am watching your videos for years now. And what can I say, the most impressive I see is your humble gratefulness for every mistake that strikes you. Taking the opportunity to learn something after failing, thats really a thing you should teach others. Ok, most of us don´t know how loud the cursing had been in the first moment and then cut out of the video. But thats ok, transporting that great attitude is what its worth watching your videos every time.

That sword is worthy of Valhalla for sure excellent work ⚔
You're videos are amazing, just flawless and I love how you think and
know that your failures are just making you learn more than to make it better. Every piece you make, you learn something new and how to put what you learn into use on other stuff you do. Had a great time watching this series and other videos too!

i doubt 1% of his followers are even above the age of 18.
how many 18-24 year olds have 5k to spare? probably none.
mind you i mean in pounds, not USD. he'll get a few bids from wealthy people no doubt. but his sword is not worth 5k pounds.
Lol it was just a "what if" question. He probably won't even get the ticket money. It'll probably be refunded or go to whatever company is actually handling the auction.

Lucas burthort I’m sorry you sold yourself.
why you going to china
Are you joining the royal navy
Incredible work. Outstanding.
Wow. Words fall short of doing that sword justice. Mr. Steele you are truly gifted.
Watching you learn new skills, practice them and implement them into this beautiful piece of art has been a wonderful experience.
Now make a shield for it.😁
Uhhh he makes weapons. Look into his bloody videos. He makes sharp weapons. Sheesh, there should be a History series where Alec details to people that they should look back through his other videos. Things like that he doesn't make hub caps and he doesn't make shields.
Wow, it is more beautiful than I imagined. Hope you get all your living arrangements and future shop sorted out with no problems. 2+ months of hard work = dreams coming true.
I can’t believe how truly amazing this sword is. I watched every video of the series, and it’s awe inspiring how beautifully you forged this peace of art. I love how it’s in the traditional style for the Vikings, so it feels functional and for all practical purposes is functional. I hope to start forging of my own, and can’t wait to see what wonders await myself. I am truly a fan of your work.
I watched the whole series in one go. Wonderful.
Can't wait to see some lucky chap take this bad boy home! I also can't wait to welcome you to the US of A. I know it's a hard decision to come here, but you'll be welcomed with open arms and will thrive in Montana. The US is enthralled with vigor as it pertains to all things 'Maker' and specifically, with forges, steel, arms/armor, etc. You'll have a blast here. It's been a pleasure and an honor sharing this journey with you. Well done homie!
This was an amazing series!! Loved watching all 28 parts. Awesome product 👍
Well worth watching every video! Thank you for taking the time to make each of these videos and allowing us to see this process.
That turned into one beautiful peice of art. Thanks for allowing us to watch this epic journey.
I was really hoping to see a slow-mo pineapple massacre at the end.
Maybe if the sword wasn't about to sell for $20k+ at auction.
@@shadowwalkerairsoft consider it "quality control"
and take even the most miniscule of chances of doing something to the blade?!! are you a madman???? this isn't a sword for "fighting" or "swinging" its a artistic marvel... the kind of sword a King would carry... kings don't fight... but they do show off.
@@Legohaiden Do you really think that it would break on a pineapple?
You do realize this is a piece of ART right? would you go mudding with the Mona Lisa in the truck bed? Once you "Use" this blade... once its been swung at and struck something, to a collector its not "new" anymore its been "used" it may sound trivial... but when your talking about HUGE TICKET luxury items people have the right to be finicky. Not to mention the risk of something going wrong... a slip of the hand, a mis-aim causing the blade to hit something hard like concrete or a wall... its just totally dumb to do.
You should be immensely proud of such a beautiful piece
Dude it was absolutely incredible to watch this project come together. Congratulations on getting it complete and on the big move. Can't wait to see what's next for you and the channel!
now its time to do a german longsword!
Damn! That was prophetic!! He's currently working on a 50+ inch german Zweihänder!
