The Kingston Trio was a favorite group of my big brother. When we played the songs he sang harmony and he was actually really good at it for someone who made no claim to being a singer... I cry now when I hear Tom Dooley cause I miss him more than anyone else I've ever had to say goodbye to...🎼💔
Old bloke humour! I went to see a 'reunion' show of a band from way backwhen, the drummer did a couple of bass kicks and a snare tap while the singer was chatting with the audience, he then turned round and said, 'What are you doing back there, building a shed?'.
Back in the day I had all the Trio's LP releases! I was a big fan! Some years later they happened for be on my airline flight and they gave me a couple of cassettes!
They have great vocal and rhythm control. As a musician I appreciate that they are very good and very talented. I'd love to see what they'd do with some flamenco scales.
I started playing guitar in ‘65 and The Kingston Trio was a big part of the how and why. What was so unique with the Trio is the interplay they always had with the audience. I’ve seen them with Trio members including, Nick Reynolds, Dave Guard, John Stewart and the ever present Bob Shane. I love this combination with Roger and George, so much talent and so well executed.
My big brother took me to see the original Kingston Trio in Baltimore in the 60s, during the height of "the folk music scare, back when that almost caught on," to quote Martin Mull.. We sat on bleachers. There were just the 3 of them, but, Man, they got the big hall going, hands clappin' & feet stompin' - Those were the days!
as a child in India, I would sing along "Hang Down Your head Tom Dooley" 45 rpm vinyl played on our monoplayer HMV Fiesta....and I fell for the song....as I soon realised it comes from such a talented 'cultural-genius' that each one of the band-members are. Thanks for the upload....it helps me connect to my 'boyish emotions' of 10-12yr old lads.
When I was kid (not sure how old), my parents went to see the Kingston Trio. I’m pretty sure it was in Atlanta at Banks & Shane. When they came home, they gave me a Kingston Trio cassette tape. I wasn’t sure why they thought I would like it, but it became one of my favorites. I wasn’t even old enough to understand the subtleties of the humor or understand the nuances of Tom Dooley, but I loved it and knew all the songs. I thought handing Charlie a sandwich through the window because he couldn’t afford to get off the train was hilarious....and a bit sad. Glad to say I’ve matured - a least a little bit - But yeah, nostalgia and a renewed appreciation from me. (Still know most of the words.)
I just read a beautiful story by my favorite author, Bill Lee. Story was about the sinking of the Ruben James. He put the link to this song in his story. I’m glad I clicked on the link because some of the comments below are very moving. Bill Lee writes for the Newport News shipbuilding apprentice news journal. I wish I could give you a link to the story, but it is as yet unpolished.
At this time I was in summer camp and we sang the song Charlie and the MTA. Someone brought up why his wife just didn't hand him a nickel so he could get off the damn train!
I have always wondered why Charlies wife didn't put a nickel in the bag🎒with that sandwich? Always loved the Kingston Trio's music and their songs, especially "Rioting In Africa"🤣 But sadly that "Merry Minuet" is happening today🌻🐦
I thought I heard them in 1980 at the Carlton Celebrity Room in Bloomington, Minnesota, but now I see this it might have been 1981. This isn't there as the CCR was very big and had a huge rotating stage. That night it was the Kingston Trio and the Irish Rovers, a great night!
Who knows the names from the men´s? Who is the men in the MIDDLE? Who is the men left with the BANJO? And who is the men RIGHT? Thank you for your help!
Guy on the lefts last name was Groves (can’t remember his first name), guy on the right was Rodger Gambill, guy in the middle was Bob Shane ( only original Trio member in this clip). I grew up with the Shane family. They owned the horse farm, appropriately named Kingston Farm, just outside Roswell Ga. where we boarded our horse. The house and property are still there, however the barn has been torn down. I dated his oldest daughter through most of my teenage years and fondly remember many nights sitting around their living room listening to Bob and Rodger play and sing along with some other local artists. Bobby was still traveling and touring a lot during those years, but he seemed to relish his down time. He had a magnificent automobile collection, particularly a gorgeous 40’s era Jaguar limo. He would ride his dirt bikes and let us shoot some of his guns. He retained ownership of the Kingston Trio name and brand until his passing due to heart disease. Hope this bit of info was helpful.
Bob licensed the rights to the KT name out to Mike Marvin in 2017 (for ten years I think), before he died. I'm not sure who gets to use the name after the license expires, probably Bob's heirs. @@kenhagerman1301
Gofaster58, interesting, because i read a short bio of Rogers after he passed away, and he said that Bob could be a real pain to work with sometimes. i knew Bob was on oxygen for a while but didint' know why. thanks for the update. my late dad also had heart problems
+3Pitous Having 52 minutes of pleasure and fun beven in 7 pieces isn't that bad! It's a very good concert. KT's concerts aren't numerous.A lot of KT fans complain about that in forums...
The band formed in the late 1950s with Dave Guard, Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds. Dave left the group in 1960 and John Steward replaced him. This group broke up in 1967, but Bob Shane carried on and bought the rights to the name from Nick and their manager (all three owned them). The group in this video - Bob, George Grove on banjo and Roger Gambill, toured from about 1976 to Roger's death in the early 80s, at which time Nick came back and Bob, George and Nick formed the group for about ten years. Nick retired and Bill Zorn took his spot, then Bob retired after heart trouble in the early 2000s. Rick Daugherty joined and George, Bill and Rick toured as the KT for 14 years (which was the formation of the group that lasted the longest). In 2017, Bob licensed the KT name to Mike Marvin, who took over and replaced George, Bill and Rick with himself and new members. I'm not sure who is with Marvin now - the personnel has changed a couple times since 2017.
What genre are these guys ? I know bluegrass which they sound a lot like but never seen or heard about folks from up North playing bluegrass. The 2nd song MTA is covered by Dropkick Murphys which is good but now I know where they got it.. I like hearing the originals to compare to the cover groups
+mixwell1983 They and the group Peter, Paul and Mary are both from the genre called "Folk" it sounds a little bluegrass, a little country. I think the Trio was even on the Grand Ol' Opry once.
Would it have been so hard to have a video showing them emerge from a Boston train stop instead of a New York City subway station ("Court Street" is in Brooklyn, a step on one line into Manhattan).
Nick rejoined after Roger Gambill died and performed with Bob Shane and George Grove for 10 years. Dave Guard never rejoined. Dave died in the 90s, as I recall. Nick (and John Stewart too) died in 2008, Bob in 2019. George Grove is still living and with Rick Daugherty and Jerry Siggins formed a group called The Folk Legacy Trio, and they are fantastic! They still tour. @@reverseclouds1663
We think of them as a Bay Area band, which is is probably a stretch. Hell! We think of everything good as coming from the Bay Area! Now that a bunch of creeps elsewhere have elected Trump, that's even more true.
Too many modifications. the original Charlie was pure class. This re-do is too juiced up, and fake. The little video shows the current Trio getting off the MTA at the "Court" subway station... THERE IS NO SUCH STATION IN THE ENTIRE MTA system. I am a Bostonian... We have our standards!

My big brother, too. But I didn't sing along. I only found out online 2 weeks ago that he died almost a year ago. No more to laugh with him.
They were so good. And funny too. I love all the self-deprecating humor.

I always loved the Kingston Trio.
When you started to play the electric organ, you know this song. They were incredible!
I love these guys. What fun to be married to one of them.
Wow you are lucky Brenda wish I had seen them live been listening to them since I can remember all my 61yrs fantastic say hello to your husband for me
Ed - thanks! These clips from the 1981 concert are great!
great group, saw at washington, mo. fair in 1986 and again at the sheldon in st. louis, mo. fred daly
The funniest line in MTA is when "his" wife hands him food through the barrier, but not the nickel he needs to get out!
Worried man starts 0:54
MTA starts 4:06
Tom Dooley starts 6:18

Born 1961, India.
Saw them in LA Music Center in 1981 when they were the “hottest ticket in town”.
Nice to see this, since the Shane-Gambill-Grove lineup did so little recording. Thanks.

Arlo woody Judy Pete Seeger Odetta Tracy Chapman Love em all ❤❤
Bob was nice guy....last years had to carry the air tank....
HUH? this song is it's own classic...
This newer version of the KT sounds just as good as the originals, i think the original member here is Bob Shane, he has a super sense of humour
That guy that left at 5:55:
Does anyone know if he ever returned?
Scotch and Soda is my favorite
At this time I was in summer camp and we sang the song Charlie and the MTA. Someone brought up why his wife just didn't hand him a nickel so he could get off the damn train!
When I saw them there was only one of the original trio left and I'm guessing that's the case here. He told several "A man walks into a bar" jokes.

wonder why they always left off the third verse of Tom Dooley when they did live
It's hard to believe this is the original lineup
Only Bob Shane is the original in the lineup.
… if u r a worried man find yourself a ‘Whalen song and a good guitar’☘️😊
They left off there last verse to the MTA and the second verse to Rom Dooley???
Loved the aside about 'coming out of the closet'

thnks. it's been 22 years but i still miss him a lot
jennifur sun I understand how that is, because I lost my Grandpa Jack 22 years ago, due to lung issues.
lost and older brother about 4 years ago to COPD-sadly when he joined the Army he started smoking
jennifur sun I lost my Uncle Andrew last year, due to lung problems too. He never smoked though. He was only 50 and his father before him was only 64.
Honestly this is real talent and entertainment. Sure isn't much of that anymore !

Last I checked the ORIGIONAL Seekers were still performing.
i would be a rude asshole if i posted on a Seekers video that Kingston Trio were as good as them
is this the hole group from the 1960's

How can they say they wrote it without crediting original artists of the chorus -- the Carter's did it, and someone else probably did it before them.
