One of Shostakovich's most under-rated compositions; why this isn't the "go-to" piece for every show-off concert pianist now plying their talent is a total mystery.
thank you for posting. Shostakovich is my favorite composer and lucked into this when I bought Alexeev's recording of the Piano Concertos. Am perplexed it is not more popular.
Note that the name of this is actually “The Storming of Fort Red Hill”, Штурм Форта Красная Горка. Beautiful would be Красивая and Nizhnij Novgorod did not get renamed Gorky until 1932, whereas the events factionalized in the film for which this music was written occurred in 1919.
The translation of the title of this piece is wrong. The right one is "The Assault on the Red Hill Fort". The Red Hill Fort (Russian: Krasnaya Gorka) was a fortification on a small island in the Gulf of Finland near St. Petersburgh, a part of Kronstadt Fortress. In the movie The Unforgettable 1919, Stalin leads assault on Krasnaya Gorka to the accompaniment of Shostakovich's music.
There's another "live" performance of this here on YT by the "Cardinal Health Orchestra" ; listen very carefully at the beginning as the conductor ( amidst the members ) describes how they obtained the score ; the audio is very bad so you have to really crank up the volume during his remarks but well worth the listen ; ( spoiler alert ) they had to dig DEEP , probably all the way to some dusty box in the basement of the Kremlin

One of my favourite pieces, wow! I find myself wanting to conduct this, it really touches my sympathetic chord

Shostakovich at his most dramatic, Frolkov really does this piece justice!
