Something to think about regarding the ability to take the arms of its enemies, whenever you find yourself trapped in the dark, what's usually the first thing you'll do on instinct? Feel through the darkness with your hands. You have no means to do so once your arms are gone.
This was a brilliant thought and I think you are either 100% correct and that’s what the authors meant, or you should be correct and the authors lucked out lol
Exactly... Without our arms, it's even more difficult to navigate through darkness... There are even more references & details hidden in those scene that we won't notice from a single read.. These minute details sure bring more depth to the dark dreadful environment of chainsaw-man. Really looking forward to Mappa's adaptation. They better go all out.
My hopes is that MAPPA does this part of the manga justice. I think it would be so cool if the episodes had weird 4th wall break moments like the manga.
@@flopcus The fight with Aki vs Katana was a wall break since the Nail from the curse devil actually are outside the paneling of the manga and intruding upon their world.
The scariest part of the darkness devil is that we have both metaphorical and literal darkness within us. Our organs and bones are all shrouded in darkness which i think is why he’s able to manipulate the bodies of others so effortlessly, because we carry his domain within us.
What makes it even scarier is that its not even the strongest primal stated to exist.Given how concepts like the unknown, fire, and even "fear" itself exists the devils governing them would be horrifically stronger than ANYTHING the cast can handle.
i noticed during this video that, through the manga before this thing appears, you would typically think of "THE Gun Devil" but it's called "SOME Gun Devil" when comparing it to the Primal Fears which might be a small thing, but i think it's a particularly scary detail, straight up saying "that monster that kills Millions in just a few seconds is quite simply *NOTHING* near a Devil like this" and that really sells the power and eldritch nature of the Primal Fear Devils _GOD_ i cannot wait for Chainsaw Man to come back, and maybe see more of these horrific, all-powerful beings
Plot-Twist: Chainsaw was the OG Primal Devil but he got cast aside and most of his powers taken and divided between the curent Primal Devils. Tho they left him with his curent power just for amusement like watching him kill lesser devils till the end of time knowing he won't be no. 1 anymore....unless maybe he can kill all the devils 🤷♂️
@@tavirosu25 that's not the worst theory/idea, to be honest but i just generally feel like the Primal Devils are the type of antagonists where, like, being able to fight and kill them would undermine the entire point behind them i mean, as explained in the video, surviving the Darkness Devil left Aki wanting to get the hell out of this job, and Power was traumatized over this event, i'm pretty sure entering a Primal Devil's domain and coming back alive is meant to be enough of a victory, even if it's not entirely positive tho i'd be interested to see the Chainsaw Devil/Chainsaw Man genuinely being a bigger deal, or maybe having some "true attribute", a different fear that he truly represents, like... idk, perhaps being the "Destruction Devil" or the "Savior Devil", but i'm just creeping into Game Theory non sense territory at this point lmao
I imagine that one of the biggest Primal Fears would be 'The End Devil'. The fear of everything one day having to end. I imagine the he's actually not antagonistic, but instead patient, understanding and, dare I say it, even kind. But from the beginning of everything, the fear of death, loss and the unknown beyond has been instinctual to every living being. And he knows this. "No one wants to die. But they will. Books end, friendships end, lives end and someday even the primal fears themselves will end. And that's terrifying no matter what you try and tell me. I don't need to kill you or even manipulate you, because no matter how far you run or how much you try and destroy me, I will be awaiting you when the time is right. I will not come for you; you will walk into my embrace by yourself. So run and rage at the world, I will see you again someday, Denji." At the end of the manga, past the credits and personal thanks from the author, on the last page, The End Devil would be sitting and looking out at the reader.
There used to be four endings to the human lifespan besides death prior to the chainsaw devil devouring them, so maybe the end devil wasnt as powerful until that happened.
And not necessarily in a good way. If there's one being in this IP whose power should be considered absolutely unquantifiable, it's the Darkness Devil. Are we seriously trying to give it a MOVELIST? Give Azathoth a DnD character sheet, why don't you? His stats are you're dead. His movelist is you lose. If he was in Smash Bros, choosing the character would cause the music to shut off and pushing any button would force all irl players permanently to their knees in supplicant prayer. Honestly, it was really stupid of us all to read that chapter.
12:30 Consider this for a moment: That arm that's brighter and more white than the rest? That's the Darkness Devil reaching out of the frame. Not towards another frame. *Towards the reader.* The 4th Wall is not a barrier to the Darkness Devil.
I absolutely LOVED this part of the manga, I’ll seriously never forget reading it for the first time and getting goosebumps when the Darkness Devil showed up with astronauts praying. And that one part where the DD was looking down upon Aki and the manga panel reads “THE ABYSS DRAWS NEAR” or something along those lines. Thanks for breaking it down Meti, always appreciate your insight my guy 🙏 👨🚀
So I looked up a while ago on what is the "Primal Fears" of people way and these are what they said: Extinction, the fear of annihilation, of ceasing to exist. This is a more fundamental way to express it than just "fear of death", Mutilation, the fear of losing any part of our precious bodily structure; the thought of having our body's boundaries invaded, or of losing the integrity of any organ, body part, or natural function, Loss of Autonomy, the fear of being immobilized, paralyzed, restricted, enveloped, overwhelmed, entrapped, imprisoned, smothered, or otherwise controlled by circumstances beyond our control, Separation the fear of abandonment, rejection, and loss of connectedness; of becoming a non-person-not wanted, respected, or valued by anyone else & Ego-death, the fear of humiliation, shame, or any other mechanism of profound self-disapproval that threatens the loss of integrity of the self; the fear of the shattering or disintegration of one's constructed sense of lovability, capability, and worthiness. In my opinion I would enjoy seeing either a Separation or Ego-death devil because they seem the most interesting between these.
yeah i saw before people talking about what other primal devils might be like and while something like a Fire devil (oh hey Agni) would definitely be powerful and probably an original fear, humanity has sort of tamed fire. so primal fears being more abstract concepts is cool and the darkness devil was a great intro to them as it is both understandable with the prevalence that comes with the fear of the dark but also the fact it goes further and incorporates the fear of the unknown as well which clearly is far stronger.
@@themrrental2509 "the fear of being immobilized, paralyzed, restricted, enveloped, overwhelmed, entrapped, imprisoned, smothered, or otherwise controlled by circumstances beyond our control." The only one that matches that is the last one tbh but I can see your point. I think is that not everyone fears being controlled, I imagine a good amount of people would see it has being directed to do something more then control.
@@themrrental2509 I agree. I think it's because Primal Fears don't apply to things which are primarily conceived of through sapient thought. It has to be something instinctive and so universal that it's engrained in what it means to be a sentient lifeform. Death sounds like another good candidate for a Primal Fear.
@@Kageryushin I'm thinking Death or Pain, maybe the concept of Inevitability or Futility. Inevitability in that seeing or knowing something will occur but can't be stopped, like watching a nuke fall from the sky toward the ground near you, there's nothing you can do but watch it happen. Futility falls into roughly the same category as Inevitability, knowing that an act or object won't change anything. Pain and Death are basically guaranteed since almost everything we do is to avoid those two things, and all fears can essentially be broken down into being afraid to die.
The darkness devil really is Fujimoto's incredibly unique style of making shounen tropes taken to it's extreme. I don't think I've seen a single being in any other manga as terrifyingly awesome as the darkness devil. When OP monsters appear in other shounen anime they're usually incredibly hyped up by the cast but in actual combat that terrifying power isn't really shown. The darkness devil does so many things to make it truly terrifying, unique and iconic. It's incomprehensible attacks and abilities makes it truly something beyond most manga villains. It's a force that is too much for the characters and even the reader to even understand. It's bizzare attacks truly fit with the theme of the fear of darkness and the unknown since it's very unclear what exactly the devil is doing a lot of the time but it. Not being shown any details of it's exact capabilites makes it even more terrifying. All that combined with Fujimoto's insane character design and incredible use of imagery truly makes this one of my favorite battles in manga history. The characters aren't fighting an overpowering foe who stands in the way of their goals, rather, they happen to run upon a living calamity, like a natural disaster which they have no way of controlling or fighting against. Everything from it's entrance to it's design to it's abilities just gives you the sense that this is a thing that humans aren't meant to fight.
Awesome comment. Pretty much sums up my thoughts that Darkness is the biggest reality check since the Eclipse of Berserk. And I enjoyed this depiction even more because of how used I got to the relative high level power of the earthy characters and even they were absolutely outclassed on the power scale when put in a domain they have no business being in.
The Darkness Devil was so well made that it made me uncomfortable while reading, I just unconsciously started to speed through it's appearance, only on my second read that I got many of the details the author made really explicit.
If I had to guess some more primal fears, there's probably Pain and Death, perhaps Inevitability and Futility. I would say Nothingness but that feels like a more recent fear when humanity starts to define itself rather then exist and survive.
i feel like the meta fears might be the worst to deal with even if not necessarily the most powerful, darkness is the earliest and strongest fear yes, but not necessarily the most sophisticated the fear of predators, the thing every single animal possesses, the fear that keeps animals alive the fear of humans, that encapsulates all forms of anxiety, and it's the most common animal instinct in the world the fear of the unknown, impossible to categorize or understand, it may be a subsection or larger part of the darkness devil the unknown fear, the near you don't know you even have, that encapsulates all the thing you don't know about, all the things you never got to see to even be afraid of yet are afraid all the same the fear of the future, inescapable and inevitable, basically all forms of aging and coming events Fear of the eldrich, of something so immeasurably above you just give up in trying to understand it all together, that reality itself isn't stable enough to be relayed upon the fear of hell, which would be meta as fuck, and now that I think about it probably the final boss of the series if it's ever actually made the fear of fear itself, the thing all warriors have, the fear of not being good enough, would probably have a 100% guaranteed moral destruction attack, and the bravest you are the more powerful it becomes
fear of the Ocean is probly a big one, Fear of loneliness (the kind that comes when all your loved ones die), the fear of fire is probably really big, the fear of Monsters as an abstract form of predator fear...
I imagine it's going to turn out the Chainsaw Devil is actually another primal devil, the Beast/Fang/Predation Devil, primal fear of being eaten, one of the primary explanations for why humans developed a fear of the dark, and a fear that exists amongst practicaly every species. Edit: especially since such a singular & game-changing ability as being able to actually kill other devils seems more fitting to a primal devil than "fear of a particular electric tool."
Or maybe the death or extinction devil. Fear of death or extinction is definitely a primal fear. EVERYONE fears death, every single creature lives to survive, to avoid death. What drives us is to avoid death. Wont be surprised if Chainsaw devil is actually the death devil.
another thing that you didnt mention is how the darkness devil spells out makima's name with the severed arms of the characters within the panel where it severs them, imply that the darkness devil is always watching, and no matter how far you go as long as theres the dark it will be there watching you like a person gazing at ants in a field.
Dude when the darkness devil was looking at aki....it was such a creepy moment...the saying"When you stare at the abyss, the abyss stares back at you"holds so true for him....
Man, the whole hell sequence and the darkness devil really is such a memorable moment. The character interactions are my favourite part of chainsaw man, but this is the peak of the manga to me. I really hope part 2 dives more into the primal fears. And I hope they are all this cool.
@@emptilion ong I’m hype bro, I can’t wait till they animate Denji fighting all the devils at once😩🙏 it’s been a tough time for my boy, shit honestly made me tear up reading the final chapters, I need him to be happy in part 2… that’s all I ask
I want to see the designs of the devils Makima mentioned having been consumed by the chainsaw man. Could you imagine what a nuclear war, AIDS or holocaust devil would look like?
I think alot of these seemingly unrelated combat powers (to the idea of darkness) is actually connected in a brilliant way. My theory is that after it envelops everything in darkness, the darkness devil can conjure anything out of it. This ties in quite nicely to the roots of the fear of darkness which is that you can never tell what is in it and what unknown horrors may come out of it.
It's kinda crazy that Makima showed almost all the darkness devils powers herself, she got to hell without dying, she looks at people and kills them from inside, she cut quanxi's limbs instantly, etc.
It just shows the extent of power she had gathered over time on earth taking and using other devils powers to enrich her own. The control devil can be extremely powerful as arguably has no limit on power as long as she can beat her opponent.
I remember hearing someone compare the Eclipse from Berserk to the "Bang" from Chainsaw Man, because they're both massive turning points in the story where the slow build of what happens before climaxes and all hell breaks loose.
The command to "open it" cutting off one of the last appearances of the "don't open the door" panel, immediately hit me with a feeling of mounting dread.
I always had the thought that because it's attacks were sounds its abilities were kinda based on the fear of hearing something you can't see, kinda like if you were lying in bed at night in a dark room and suddenly you hear a noise, it may not necessarily be a scary noise but that noise is still enough to startle and scare you.
The Darkness Devil sequence in the manga is one of the most striking and riveting sequences that I've ever read, and it was the moment that convinced me that Chainsaw Man was a true masterpiece. I love how you broke it all down in this video.
I think the Darkness Devil also helped build up hype for what the fully empowered Chainsawman could do. The fact that he got dragged to hell by the hell demon and then came back off panel was a really big wow moment that wouldn't have had such a punch without the darkness devil subplot.
Riveting writing for the parts you mentioned. The peak for me was Makima and Power after Denji opened the door. That scene in particular made me walk away from the computer processing wtf just happened; whereas the ptsd panels and darkness introduction hooked my attention.
I think the scariest part about it is the fact that even by the end of the manga, its still WAY out of everyone's league to a comical degree. It makes you realize that during that moment of fighting it,the story could have ended right then and there if it was slightly more serious than a curious/annoyed entity.
My favourite theory in chainsawman is that the reason Power is so gross is because, since she's the blood devil, most of her strength comes from disgust rather than fear
Other potential primal fears: 1. Fire Devil - It would probably be weak due to how fire was tamed and controlled by humans, but fire is still dangerous and fear-inducing. That and wildfires. 2. Height Devil - Fear of heights is baked into the brains of most humans and animals due to the fact that those without that fear would die. I'm interested in how such a devil could even look like. 3. Animal/Predator Devil - Almost every non-predator animal is scared of bears, lions, tigers etc. Pretty much anything above them in the foodchain. We might have guns and weapons to fight them, but the fear is still there. This one probably has the highest likelihood of being a thing. Would be funny if the counter to it is an animal like the Dodo or Capybara which don't experience that fear due to lack of predators. 4. Stranger/Unknown Devil - most things are cautious at minimum about things and people they don't know. Whether it be some new berry in a bush, a new animal in a tree or even a new member of your own kind.
I feel like the fire devil and the darkness devil would be natural rivals due to fire being one of the things to light up dark places. That's just me though
I feel like a Death Devil or an End Devil (fear of the end of life/existence/time etc.) would probably completely bonkers as most fears boil down to those two concepts. Why do we fear fire/heights/unknown? Because they will lead to our death/end.
Well, Death Devil was already mentioned by Makima, as being part of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Who fought alongside the Weapon Devils against Pochita.
Primal-wise, it would be cool if they had a 4 Horsemen-esque, as in there’s just four of them: Darkness, Fire, Heights, and Death. One thought i’ve been having for a while now is that the Chainsaw devil is in someway related to the Death devil. After all, it’s weird how that in a world where demons can die and be reborn, it’s a chainsaw devil that can truly kill another demon for good. Wouldn’t that be something inherently unique to the death devil?
I feel like it would be Time, Darkness, Death, and some other primal fear. I'm thinking Predators, as in the fear of being one rung lower on the food chain than something else.
Yeah, still kinda weird that a devil based from fear of chainsaw would be strong as that and would be the one who could erase devil name. P.s on the second thought tho, the name of the devil may be not so related to the devil abilities, look at Makima, control devil for example, aside from her main control abilities, she can pretend to shot a bullet and it actualy happend, and could kill somebody from far far away like a voodo. P.s 2, now i think about it, how could a Spider Devil is weaker than chainsaw man, alot of people fear spider, heck even cockroach should be stronger than chainsaw man if we're using "the more fear, the stronger the devil get" logic.
@@FriendlyGoblinWasTaken “Fear” stems from an instinctual want to live, so I would assume that “Death” or “The End” are the strongest devils to ever exist. Death is the end of a life, but The End/Oblivion is the end of _everything._ The extinction of the human race. Earth’s destruction. The Solar System’s demise. The universe’s heat death. All of these can be _likened_ to Death, but are still fairly different.
I imagine Pain has to be a primal devil, right? What do you think the Pain Devil would look like? What other things would qualify for "primal" devils, and which would be the strongest? I love thinking about these guys. The Darkness Devil was so cool, so the others have gotta be just as sick, right?
One of the best, most well researched and accurate analyses on Chainsaw man I've seen so far. So many people blabber into the empty after 1 google search, this video was really refreshing.
This is a HUUUGE stretch but the first thing that came to mind when the frog appeared was GeGeGe no Kitaro's opening since they appear croaking in the dark during the 'GeGeGe no Ge' part. Tho the Egyptian god still makes more sense it's very likely that Fujimoto read Kitaro considering how big it is in Japan
The darkness devil has to be the most horrifying thing in ChainsawMan and is a definition of what a devil is the this series. Even Makimi, someone godlike, even her retreated in fear by the darkness devil.
The Unknown Devil, representing the ancient fear of the Unknown, will be the strongest devil in Chainsaw Man, and no one can change my mind about that. Every fear originates from doubt and terror towards the unknown, towards what we can't understand.
I find it curious that there isn't a "Death Devil", yet, at least. Sounds like a fine candidate for a Primal Fear. If the author want to give a more badass name, perhaps "Extinction Devil", one that can literally erase someone's existence entirely, including memories of that one person. Or perhaps even the "Unknown Devil". It plays similar to Darkness Devil, but makes anyone near it anxious to not being able to think straight or even attack, fearing whatever they do next. They literally don't need to do anything and anyone close can have a mental breakdown. Truth being they can do anything, "reality distortion/manipulation" is a vanilla power for those kids of creatures.
That's what I've been thinking too. But since u also thought of Darkness Devil and it actually exists, the Death Devil will probably be one of, or even maybe the last Devil of the series
So if the darkness devil destroy completely those who are weaker than him, the fact that kobeni have survived without any severe injuries means that his contract is with a primal devil as well, or something powerful like them?
My thoughts are that Kobeni is contracted with a "Luck" Devil or something of the same sort. It's never officially stated what devils she is contracted with because she quits Pubsec very early on
@@Apollo_VonAlmen yeah, my thinking was the same, but because the darkness devil is a primal devil i think that he would overcome the luck from the luck devil, however, it is possible either the luck devil to be a primal as well, because, normally darkness isnt a primal fear, or the luck devil's luck is absolute, idk
Imagine people fearing luck... My guess is the opposite, she had contract with misfortune devil that bring misfortune to her in exchange for saving her life in return
There are two issues I have with this video (not of it’s quality) 1 notice the female demon in berserk is the same one who was assumed not alive when the skull man tried to save his beloved (she’s the same woman) 2 the primal fears have a second theme to them and it irks me so much that I forgot it, one of which there name the second I forgot. So while dark has the powers of darkness and space it has a secondary title that truly cements it as an eldritch horror (it was mentioned somewhere but I forgot and all of the others have it)
@@jermainehenry7268 no I think it was the void itself or the emptiness of space which is how it messes peoples insides up because it’s literally having the same effects of space itself
To me I saw the Astronauts represented humanities greatest hopes, achievements and aspirations, as they are incredibly strong in Smarts, very physically capable aswell as indomitable will to reach for stars. To see their bodies arranged in submission is to see that all of our hopes and greatest achievements could never compare to the Darkness Devil.
imagine not having read the manga and not caring about spoilers and his starting line is basically: "the group find themselves in hell with santa clause"
The Darkness Devil was the one time I felt genuine hopelessness during the series. This thing effortlessly crippled the whole group in a nanosecond, and the only reason it didn’t kill more of the group was, quite frankly, due to a Deus Ex Machina. Hell, even Makima got folded after only, like, 2 seconds of resisting it. And we only got a *peek* at it.
With how powerful the Darkness Devil is, i wonder how strong the Death Devil could be. Could it be comparable to the Darkness Devil? Or could it be even stronger? Hope we get to see something like that in CSM 2
@@bubbletroubles5234 From what was said in the manga, Devils are born from human fears, and the more humans fear them, the stronger they get. That's exactly why the gun devil becomes so powerful, because there was a massive increase in human fear of guns 🔫
@@clanjebb2017 god devil would actually be interesting since(assuming this is Abrahamic God." No one should fear God in the conventional way like other fears. Of course there are people that do, but it's a small amount. So I'm very interested to see how that would play out.
I feel like Death and Unknowing devils would be two of the strongest devils. Everyone has an overbearing fear of death which usually is what drives the fear of most phobias. The Unknowing Devil would be just as strong since a majority of people fear the unknown and often only conquer those fears once yourself or someone else reveals the truth of the unknown. Even then, there is always another unknown that puts you right back at square one and only infinite knowledge of all things would allow one to not fear the unknown.
To me the astronauts represented the people who was truly terrified of endless darkness and the people closer to understand how vast it is would be astronauts cuz they seen the endless darkness thats much greater than they could imagine
I would love to see a devil based upon a dragon, as it’s the combined fears that primates share. The tiger, snake, and hawk could either be individual demons in a team or perhaps a bastardized amalgamation that makes it really unique.
@@leilahosborne7992 Nothing they said implied they didn't read it. They just said the demons for tigers, snakes, and hawks could either work together or be combined into a dragon devil. Just because he snake exists doesn't mean it contradicts what they asked for.
It’s not confirmed in anyway, but I think that one of Quanxi’s fiends (the one that kind of looks like Power) was a Dragon Devil. She has horns and breathes fire, so…
Before this video I really wanted to see more of the darkness devil, but after what you said at the end about its mystery I really want to see what other primal fear devils might be, like maybe war or the british (jk).
I always thought of the Astronauts as this. No matter how far we go, no matter the places we explore, we are nothing in the face of the unknown. We will never conquer it. We will never understand it. We can only show respect, and being on our knees wouldn’t be enough…
Just looked it up and the primal fears include: extinction, mutilation, loss of autonomy, separation, and ego-death. With separation being closed related to darkness
loss of autonomy seems so similar to the control devil ahaha, separation is similar to darkness, what in the actual heck would extinction and mutilation look like? and ego death, like a loss of identity? O_O
5:16 Ik this two years ago but nah. Love how you deep dive and read into everything but the head just looks cool and intimidating af. Love comparing it to the Pteranodon skull but realistically it just LOOKS scary and that's probably the design motivator, not really Pteranodon esc at all except for it had two elongated bony looking plates.
Wonder if we're going to see other Primal Fears like death, loneliness, famine, in part 2. If Darkness was this OP, imagine how powerful Death will be, given that its the most common fear known to man. Not to mention how crazy the design will look.
I like how the Darkness Devil is based on the primal fear of extinction, but is represented by the most recognized sub fear of extinction. Technically the domination devil should also be a primal fear, but manga readers will know that can’t be the case.
I’m not finished the manga so if it does exist, then that’s cool. but from what spoilers i’ve inevitably heard there is apparently no death devil, which is surprising to me as death is probably the most feared thing by humans and basically all other living things. if it doesn’t appear in the manga then perhaps it’s because the fear is far to great to be embodied and portrayed. considering how massive and terrifying the gun devil was, only hell knows how vile and terrifying a death devil would be.
Primal fears of humanity Darkness = Fear of the Unknown so i would say a primal fear would be - Death (even animals are afraid of it) - Nature (as in Nature itself the wilderness) - Cold (as there first was cold THEN fire making a fire devil slightly weaker) - Hunger (different from famine as a famine is an event - hunger is a state and fear all expirience) - Sickness (i think all i need to say here is - The Black Death) End Times (so any kind of apocalypse)
Imagine fujimoto adds a death devil, like, imagine, every creatures primal fear is death, imagine how powerful it would be compared to the darkness devil
This is a really good video. Compelling writing and beautiful editing. Thank you for making this ! I really like chainsaw man, and even though I haven't finished reading it, I'd say I like more the idea of it. I would like to give some of my thoughts on it related to the topic of the video. To begin with, I'd say that the darkness devil is very clearly powerful but im my opinion not as strong as an actual primordial fear. Loss of senses and control over what's around us is terrifying and often comes natural to us humans, however, if I had to imagine a stronger fear to speculate about the appearance of a devil that surpasses the darkness devil I'd say there's a few ones that would be absolutely no match. The way we understand the world is by placing ourselves and other things in a place in our mind, giving it meaning, and identity in association with purpose. If there is something like an Ego Devil, it would be an absolute menace. Loss of identity, ego-death, is something nobody ever wants to experience, often seen as a fate worse than simple death. I'd imagine its appearance like a faceless, shapeless horror that only appears inside of some people's minds, that creeps up and stares, ends up becoming part of someone, erasing their memory, making others forget about them, until that person isn't someone anymore, forgetting how to even fear it, or anything else. Then there could also be a Weakness Devil, an invincible, immovable, and invulnerable titan, that could shatter reality just by punching hard enough. It would make every living thing decay and become weak and even change their size. As the loss of autonomy and lack of strength is something every being is struggling to avoid, being a universal law that all things shrivel up and disappear. Next may be the fear of being abandoned by, or lose others of our kind that we have attachment to. I see the Separation Devil simply as invisible hands that make people disappear without a trace, nothing else, nothing more, it just takes and takes, and when it seems like it's gone, and things seem safe, it always comes back as if it had never left. The last one that most people agree on being part of the primal human fears, is extinction. Pretty self explanatory. I'd love for The Extinction Devil to just be just a black hole, except sentient and can warp time and space, making the air being unusually cold and time becoming inconsistent around people who challenge death. Whenever a living thing turns cold, it's actually the abyss taking it. If someone doesn't follow the rules of nature, they are taken to a white abyss where they're eternally in a dying state, slowed to an extreme, repeating endlessly.
Astronaut are suppose to be our hero that goes beyond the unknown that we call space. They are our hope the beacon of light but to think they're praying to the Darkness Devil. all hope is lost
My Headcanons: Primal Devils: Darkness Devil, The Devil of the Unknown, Death Devil, Falling Devil I think Pochita might not be the Devil of Chainsaws, but perhaps the Devil of The Unknown, Futility or perhaps the Devil of Being Forgotten. Futility and Being Forgotten fits to why Denji may have pulled in Pochita like that. The Darkness Devil: Removes arms because you use them to feel your way through Darkness. Removes legs because you tred through Darkness. Removes head because you think to navigate through Darkness and eyes to see through Darkness. Able to split your body into pieces and drain you of your blood because your insides are forever in a state of darkness, unable to have light within them unless by unusual means. Clothes only make you more enveloped into Darkness. Sword of Nullity (What I call the sword that impaled Makima) is possibly something of which is a insta-kill once inside you long enough/on command due to interaction with Darkness. Space is the biggest void of darkness, hence correlation with astronauts. Darkness is always present in your mind, not only as a fear, but as a very means of your existence, conceptual or not, due to thoughts and ideas. It controls not only that, but negativity and misunderstandings themselves. If there is no devil of the Unknown, then it IS also a Devil of the Unknown. Not only that, but it is the Devil of Nothingness and Void, as well as the Devil of Futility.
The Death Devil is actually one of the 4 horsemen, so maybe it WAS a primal devil but got nerfed so hard due to religions, sacrifices, and suicides. Showing that some humans aren't afraid of death. In this case, a patriotic soldier is the Death Devil's worst enemy.

I think the same at the time. Tecnically you sacrifice your arms when youre blind.
I wonder how long fujimoto thought about this….
The echo locaters suffer from no such restrictions
When the dark devil cut everyone's arm, notice that it doesn't cut their clothes, so wearing any kind of armor might be useless too.

The scariest part of the darkness devil is that we have both metaphorical and literal darkness within us. Our organs and bones are all shrouded in darkness which i think is why he’s able to manipulate the bodies of others so effortlessly, because we carry his domain within us.
That’s pretty deep to think about
damn, that’s dark. (no pun intended)
What makes it even scarier is that its not even the strongest primal stated to exist.Given how concepts like the unknown, fire, and even "fear" itself exists the devils governing them would be horrifically stronger than ANYTHING the cast can handle.

So I looked up a while ago on what is the "Primal Fears" of people way and these are what they said:
Extinction, the fear of annihilation, of ceasing to exist. This is a more fundamental way to express it than just "fear of death",
Mutilation, the fear of losing any part of our precious bodily structure; the thought of having our body's boundaries invaded, or of losing the integrity of any organ, body part, or natural function,
Loss of Autonomy, the fear of being immobilized, paralyzed, restricted, enveloped, overwhelmed, entrapped, imprisoned, smothered, or otherwise controlled by circumstances beyond our control,
Separation the fear of abandonment, rejection, and loss of connectedness; of becoming a non-person-not wanted, respected, or valued by anyone else &
Ego-death, the fear of humiliation, shame, or any other mechanism of profound self-disapproval that threatens the loss of integrity of the self; the fear of the shattering or disintegration of one's constructed sense of lovability, capability, and worthiness.
In my opinion I would enjoy seeing either a Separation or Ego-death devil because they seem the most interesting between these.
"Loss of Autonomy" is basically just "Control" so I wonder why it seems like Makima isn't considered a primal fear.
yeah i saw before people talking about what other primal devils might be like and while something like a Fire devil (oh hey Agni) would definitely be powerful and probably an original fear, humanity has sort of tamed fire. so primal fears being more abstract concepts is cool and the darkness devil was a great intro to them as it is both understandable with the prevalence that comes with the fear of the dark but also the fact it goes further and incorporates the fear of the unknown as well which clearly is far stronger.
I also sped through that part. I wanna go back and reread that part cause I was too scared to figure out what happened without looking at it
If I had to guess some more primal fears, there's probably Pain and Death, perhaps Inevitability and Futility.
I would say Nothingness but that feels like a more recent fear when humanity starts to define itself rather then exist and survive.
Plenty of cultures had nothingness being death so I wouldn't doubt its swagger
i feel like the meta fears might be the worst to deal with even if not necessarily the most powerful, darkness is the earliest and strongest fear yes, but not necessarily the most sophisticated
the fear of predators, the thing every single animal possesses, the fear that keeps animals alive
the fear of humans, that encapsulates all forms of anxiety, and it's the most common animal instinct in the world
the fear of the unknown, impossible to categorize or understand, it may be a subsection or larger part of the darkness devil
the unknown fear, the near you don't know you even have, that encapsulates all the thing you don't know about, all the things you never got to see to even be afraid of yet are afraid all the same
the fear of the future, inescapable and inevitable, basically all forms of aging and coming events
Fear of the eldrich, of something so immeasurably above you just give up in trying to understand it all together, that reality itself isn't stable enough to be relayed upon
the fear of hell, which would be meta as fuck, and now that I think about it probably the final boss of the series if it's ever actually made
the fear of fear itself, the thing all warriors have, the fear of not being good enough, would probably have a 100% guaranteed moral destruction attack, and the bravest you are the more powerful it becomes

It's kinda crazy that Makima showed almost all the darkness devils powers herself, she got to hell without dying, she looks at people and kills them from inside, she cut quanxi's limbs instantly, etc.

quick correction: what caused the fiends reactions once they entered hell was the darkness devil watching them, not just being in hell in general
This part of the manga was genuinely disturbing, ominous, and very very sad and I think the author did a wonderful job portraying ptsd with power

Other potential primal fears:
Height devil gotta be short.
Not only to contrast but to SCALE him up for extra mind-fuckery and perspective work.
No. Four Horsemens are :
1. War Devil
2. Hunger Devil
3. Death Devil
4. Control Devil (Makima)
Doesn't Makima had a contract with the height devil? That power where she can squish someone instantly by sacrificing another person.
I imagine the Fire Devil will resemble the main character from Fire Punch 😉
@@Apollo_VonAlmen I’m assuming the final one would be The Devil himself

This is a HUUUGE stretch but the first thing that came to mind when the frog appeared was GeGeGe no Kitaro's opening since they appear croaking in the dark during the 'GeGeGe no Ge' part. Tho the Egyptian god still makes more sense it's very likely that Fujimoto read Kitaro considering how big it is in Japan
The darkness devil has to be the most horrifying thing in ChainsawMan and is a definition of what a devil is the this series. Even Makimi, someone godlike, even her retreated in fear by the darkness devil.
After what his manga has done to me I'm pretty sure there's a tatsuki fujimoto devil.
The Unknown Devil, representing the ancient fear of the Unknown, will be the strongest devil in Chainsaw Man, and no one can change my mind about that. Every fear originates from doubt and terror towards the unknown, towards what we can't understand.
This was the Eclipse of Chainsaw Man
Hmmm I wouldn't say it was quite as extreme as the eclipse but I can see some parallels
Death Devil was metioned by Makima once.

@@bubbletroubles5234 From what was said in the manga, Devils are born from human fears, and the more humans fear them, the stronger they get. That's exactly why the gun devil becomes so powerful, because there was a massive increase in human fear of guns 🔫
Man, you sure is the best at analysing things like this
It makes me imagine, if the most feared things are the strongest demons, is there a death devil? And is there a devil devil?
I feel like if we ever saw a devil devil or if it ever existed it would be the most strongest devil ever
@@peak4534 maybe not the strongest bcs the devil isn't a natural fear of the human, so as I said i think the death would be the strongest
satan devil perhaps, maybe even a god Devil?
@@clanjebb2017 god devil would actually be interesting since(assuming this is Abrahamic God." No one should fear God in the conventional way like other fears. Of course there are people that do, but it's a small amount. So I'm very interested to see how that would play out.
What about the fear of nothing. Like, would devil be non existent
“Hello darkness my old friend” - some musician
The entire chainsaw man series would have turn into a horror movie if this arc ever gets animated
Easily the best part of the manga for me. The arc itself is already so good but as soon as that little black Blob descends shit gets cranked to 11
I feel like Death and Unknowing devils would be two of the strongest devils.
I guess there probably be 6 primal devils. Darkness, Identity, Death, Sickness, Meaning, and Alone
how much u wanna bet there’s a Death Devil
I would love to see a devil based upon a dragon, as it’s the combined fears that primates share. The tiger, snake, and hawk could either be individual demons in a team or perhaps a bastardized amalgamation that makes it really unique.
But there is an issue: those are nowadays seen as absolutely FUKKIN' AWESOME!
@@patrickfrost9405 So are foxes and bats. Dragons still bring up terrifying imagery.
I feel like you don't actually read CSM...one of the main antagonist contracts with the snake devil in the Katana man arc
She has horns and breathes fire, so…
The scene with the astronauts in a praying position and the darkness devil in the background has to be one of my favorite panels in the whole manga
I always thought if we saw another primal fear it should be the Loneliness Devil, that would be quite the trip.
I LOVE Berserk.
But you are reeeeeaaaaching on some of those references. A lot of them are spot on but my guy. You made "Hell" a Berserk reference.
“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear and the oldest and strongest kind if fear is fear of the unknown” - H.P Lovecraft
followed by death, then falling
@@guymanhumanperson Falling Devil: Bonjour
you really know your stuff. this is fantastic
The darkness devil is 1 of my fav designs in chainsawman so far
5:16 Ik this two years ago but nah. Love how you deep dive and read into everything but the head just looks cool and intimidating af. Love comparing it to the Pteranodon skull but realistically it just LOOKS scary and that's probably the design motivator, not really Pteranodon esc at all except for it had two elongated bony looking plates.
My Home Screen to this day, when someone recognize Ik we gon be homies
I feel like the floating arms positions in that panel means something
Wonder if we're going to see other Primal Fears like death, loneliness, famine, in part 2. If Darkness was this OP, imagine how powerful Death will be, given that its the most common fear known to man. Not to mention how crazy the design will look.
I’m 1 year late but does this mean there’s a noise demon? Humans are born with the fear of loud noises even as babies
I like how the Darkness Devil is based on the primal fear of extinction, but is represented by the most recognized sub fear of extinction. Technically the domination devil should also be a primal fear, but manga readers will know that can’t be the case.
I think Meti would really, REALLY love Dungeon Menshi. It starts as a simple fantasy cooking manga -- then it goes wild.
The most memorable moment in the manga for me. Panels with him appearing are a graphical masterpiece
This part of the arc had similar vibes to the black eclipse arc in Berserk, though not as... well you know.
Primal fears of humanity
Darkness = Fear of the Unknown
so i would say a primal fear would be -
Death (even animals are afraid of it) -
Nature (as in Nature itself the wilderness) -
Cold (as there first was cold THEN fire making a fire devil slightly weaker) -
Hunger (different from famine as a famine is an event - hunger is a state and fear all expirience) -
Sickness (i think all i need to say here is - The Black Death)
End Times (so any kind of apocalypse)
Imagine fujimoto adds a death devil, like, imagine, every creatures primal fear is death, imagine how powerful it would be compared to the darkness devil
Probably wouldn't be
@@goat3274 how so?
Just wait until the Death Devil reveals itself.
I'm a simple man, I see Chainsaw Man, I click
My Headcanons:
Primal Devils:
Darkness Devil, The Devil of the Unknown, Death Devil, Falling Devil
I think Pochita might not be the Devil of Chainsaws, but perhaps the Devil of The Unknown, Futility or perhaps the Devil of Being Forgotten. Futility and Being Forgotten fits to why Denji may have pulled in Pochita like that.
The Darkness Devil:
Removes arms because you use them to feel your way through Darkness.
