    excellent video. i’ve been watching a lot of stuff about human evolution recently and decided to look for something weaponry specific. i was kinda surprised at how little content there was but this is exactly what i was looking for. just subscribed.

    Might have wanted to add the throwing stick, atlatl and the sling as they were before bows. The sling was still in use by the Romans and after. People still use them for hunting today. Cheaper and easier to make than bow and arrows, but totally ignored by most.

    • @hiddenwoodsben
      @hiddenwoodsben Рік тому

      cheaper and easier, sure, but incredibly difficult to become accurate with. i trained some 300 hours before i was able to consistently hit a squirrel (ok, ok, ok, it was a stuffed sock. but squirrel-sized) from 10 meters, with a bow you need, what, maybe 20 hours? the stories of old peruvian or balearic slingers being able to hit birds in flight are possible, but only if the slinger would have trained their entire life. throwing stick and javelin aren't much better, accuracy-wise. the first system that added considerably to the users accuracy was the spear-thrower (which folks tend to call atlatl), so i agree on that one.
      by now i forgot why i started this ramble, but it would be a pity to delete it, so ignore if you want.

    Interesting topic, The main context of Evolution is concentrated on modern historical weapons & not much evolution, confusion as well when refering to modern countries that didn't exist & then refering to some from a certain period to what is not relevant by the name used by the locals, in the context of Evolution Egypt is a greek term of the time, Aramaic/Arabic is Misr & Nth African is Khemet, Mongolia, China, etc. didn't exist, Languages & cultures are a lot more fluid & technologies in the whole context of EVOLUTION, no concrete boundaries or borders 🍻

    The Japanese long bow The oldest one was 1AD-3AD they had iron or steel tips early aero tips they were made out of bamboo Horn antler bone and the Arrow itself was bamboo it’s range was 300 yards usually there had to be ones that were 500 yard on horseback it would’ve been 350 370

      The assymetric Yumi (the Japanese longbow), is shaped to accomodate the short stature of the typical Japanese of the time.

      It all depends on the armour, arrow head and bow. But it’s true, some medieval bows can even pierce armour from 200m away.

    you went from spears to muskets ... what is this? aren't you forgetting axes slingshots and anything in between? why did you include firearms at all?

    • @ancientyoke
      @ancientyoke  Рік тому +1

      I’m a bit confused, I think you may have missed a chunk of the video. I mentioned both, slings and axes and that there were many variants. In between Spears and Muskets I mentioned, Axes, Swords, Slings, Tridents, Siege Equipment, Chariots, naval warfare, Early Chinese gunpowder weapons like, fire lances, fire arrows and other weapons that weren’t used in battle. So I definitely did not jump from Spears to muskets.
