- So, why is Rudolph's nose green? Here in Illinois, red lights are only legal in front on emergency vehicles. But hey, a green nose is just as useful as a red one on a foggy Christmas Eve.
BTW, the story, as written by Montgomery Ward employee Robert May in 1939, was originally rejected by the company -- at the time, red noses were associated with drunkeness and chronic alcoholism. But the story illustrations of cute reindeer, by Ward's artist Denver Gillen, saved the day. May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, wrote the 1949 song that was made a #1 hit (2.5 million records the first year) by singing movie cowboy Gene Autry.
