I personally don't like defense, in any sport. I want to see people who play to win, not play 'not to lose'. Especially in tennis, you are like a gladiator in an arena, and you want to take the punches to your opponent, not dance around until he stumbles onto his own sword. That being said, pushing or playing defense is a very valid skill, and think about Muhammad Ali, who won his fight against George Foreman with a rope-a-dope technique. This is the very boxing equivalent to 'pushers' or 'counterpunchers'. If you manage to beat a defensive player, you know you are able to play good tennis. Everyone should regularly practice against pushers or counterpunchers! If you overcome the antipathy in your mind and regard them as the good players they are, you will thrive.
Defense can be an acquired taste; it's not for everyone. I personally like seeing both good offense and defense. Great example (on defense) regarding the rope-a-dope fight as Ali knew he couldn't overpower Foreman. He had to rely on parrying and absorbing blows until Foreman got gassed. Thanks for your insights!

Love it! Gave me some extra stuff to think about :)
Nice!
Also in soccer once a team has a lead some teams just play defense to only block goals aka "parking the bus".
Interesting! Is “parking the bus” considered derogatory in soccer? Seems like a valid strategy
