  • Big thanks to Brad Amborski for letting me check out his Model Y! Check out his channel here: / @bradamborski
This is the Model Y Dual Motor long range with the 20” induction wheels, black paint, white interior, and 5 seat setup. This setup gets around 326 miles of EPA estimated range.
So right off the bat, the obvious difference one is just overall size. The Model Y is a much bigger car. Compared to the Model 3 It’s 2” longer, 3” wider, and a full 7” taller.
Which means I can actually sit pretty comfortably in the back seat. I’m 6’4” and its usually a tight fit in the back seat of my 3, but I’ve got some room to spare in the Model Y. My head is about 2-3” from the glass roof - which doesn’t have the center pillar like the Model 3 - and I’ve actually got some leg room without butting up against the back seat.
The trunk is already pretty big, and opens like a normal SUV so you can fit larger items in here, and the seats do fold down somewhat automatically. You push this button and hear an electronic release that drops the seats down.
When you fold the seats down, you can really see just how much more room the Model Y has - specs show it has 68 cubic feet of storage, compared to 43 in the Model 3. And this is making me wish I had a Model Y when I camped in my car a few months ago. That smaller trunk opening really confines things in the Model 3.
To put the seats back up, you do have to do that manually, and you can actually recline these back seats a bit which is interesting by pressing in on the manual release and pushing it back slightly.
But besides the size, just about everything is the same on the interior - same screen, same steering wheel, same center console. The front seats are the same too, but they are lifted up a bit on these platforms so you do sit up higher.
So my advice here, if you are deciding between the two - I personally think you can’t go wrong with either, but it depends on your lifestyle and what you want to do with the car.
For me, I decided on the Model 3 because it was cheaper, I like having a smaller, sportier, car, and most of the time I am the only one in the car, so interior space isn’t a huge deal. That being said, the cargo space in the Model 3 has impressed me a lot. We’ve fit huge boxes from IKEA in here, and we’ve fit 4 people in here with all of their luggage when traveling for the holidays last year, but it was a tight fit.
The Model Y’s main advantage is the cargo space. If you are someone that is driving passengers around a lot, I think that added space is a must. It really is a do-it-all car. You can fit 5 passengers in here pretty comfortably, and folding the back seats allows you to fit just about anything you’re going to pick up in day to day shopping. And it even has the option for a tow hitch, so if you do want to haul around even larger items, that capability is there.
Overall I was really impressed, and I think the Model Y is a great car. Tesla has stuck with what works on the Model 3 and added the extra space many customers were looking for. And if that is something you are looking for, then I definitely recommend it.

What would you choose? Model Y or Model 3?

Just took delivery of the Model 3. We looked at the Y, but we’re a retired couple with grown-up kids, both of whom live in Europe, so the size of the 3 made more sense.

Personally ever since I saw the Y in my neighborhood the first week it was released I was just not a fan of the look. Just looks like a fat 3. I see Model X's all the time and they look amazing

Model Y is family suv 🚙 vs model 3 sedan!

Does a new Model 3 have the same suspension as that new Model Y? It seems like it would, so they might be even in that category. I did go camping in my Model 3 and I agree it would be much more enjoyable in the Model Y.

    • @Sibs
      @Sibs  3 роки тому +1

It's still a spring suspension, but definitely more comfortable ride. I'm guessing it's slightly different due to the added weight. Larger tires probably play a role too.

Finally someone with a proper height testing these cars!😂 I’m 6’4” too, glad to see the Y being so spacious. I love the 3 but I really have to sit down low to get into the driving position. Waiting for the Y releasing in the UK finally!

Love the size of the Y but...I can't see the hood of the car while driving, which drives me nuts. FWIW I can barely see the hood on my 3 but it's "just enough" to make me comfortable. The bolsters on the Y front seats seem to be "tighter" which might be uncomfortable for some. Love the higher seat height, though. Also the range of the Y is less than the 3 which might be an issue on a long trip where the supercharger network isn't quite as built out (yet) as other areas. IMO it boils down to how much space you need. Get the Y for a family car, the 3 if it's just one or two people.

Definitely, I forgot to mention range. I honestly don't even think about it anymore 🤣 over 300 is more than enough imo

I’m surprised that the ride in the Model Y is substantially smoother than the Model 3 since both have coil suspension. It could be that the increased weight of the Model Y in addition to a longer wheelbase contributes to a smoother ride.

I was really surprised! I think that definitely contributed

We thought our next EV was absolutely going to be the Model Y but we prefer the drive, seat comfort, and sportiness of the Model 3. We're tall people and the seats in the Model Y just aren't as comfortable as the Model 3 seats even though they are the same seats. We ordered our Model 3 SR+ (blue) in August using your referral code, Alex, (it's under Gary E.) and are just waiting for a delivery date as we've completed everything else. We'll probably extend the delivery into January as that is closer to when our lease ends on our Kia Niro EV, which we will probably buy and sell outright (we have an open end lease) although it might just be less of a hassle to trade it in on the Model 3. Thanks for your great videos which helped us make our decision on our next EV.

i test drove the y and the model 3 sr+, and i preferred the 3. besides being out of my price range, i didn't like not being able to see the front of the hood as clearly as the 3 (sloping hood vs a more flat hood on the 3), despite having the seats as high up as they could go. also, for some reason. the side mirrors didn't tilt up enough on the y i test drove, so i couldn't see the horizon at all--i was just staring at the ground.
the 3 felt more fun to drive, and i felt i had a better idea where the front of the car was.
i'm sure i'll get used to it, but i don't like how i fall into the 3 seats though. the y felt more comfortable in that respect.
as much as i'd like the hatchback, i currently don't use the hatchback in my leaf, so i think i'll be fine w/ the 3's trunk.
interesting that you're saying the y is more comfortable than the 3. most of what i've heard is that the suspension is stiffer on the y and bumps and things are more noticable on the y compared to the 3. also being taller, i've heard people saying that you can feel a bit more roll on the y compared to the 3. i didn't have a a long time to test drive the cars, so i can't really say anything about that from experience.
i have a very short commute and would've loved the standard range y, but i'll stick w/ the 3 and when it's time to trade it in i'll test drive the lr 3 and the y again. and maybe the standard range will be available again by then

Nice overview. We picked the Y for height, space, & camping but I think the 3 is sportier and looks better. Both great options.
