He's A Lover is a perfect exhibit of the lost art of how to make a record that is clearly sexually aware, and do so without needing any lyrical explicitness. It trusts our intelligence to pick up the fact that Mary knows this man through and through, in and out of the bedroom. Made well before the very bold statements by Franklin at Atlantic and even Martha's "My Baby Loves Me," He's A Lover was and is a record for discerning adults.
This is Mary. Diana's voice is not as full as Mary. Mary is great because she can sing in different voices. Check out her Jubilee, Atco, Epic recordings.
@@charleslawrence2027 Yes, you are right. When I listen carefully I can discern that Mary has the fuller voice than Diana. Wish Mary Wells didn't make the stupid mistake of leaving Motown. She may have been robbed off some money but she lost the creative atmosphere at Motown and most of all the songs written by Smokey Robinson.
@@frankiehunter.I don't know, they would've treated her the same way as the other female acts and push her to the back burner for Diana's career had she stayed
Yes she is. As I was just sitting here listening, to this song, I thought to myself: If Mary, hadn't of left Motown, she would've been where Diane is; Berry Gordy, would've focused on Mary, and she would've sung more of the songs, the writers, were writing with Diane in mind; and that would've lead to Florence Ballard, still being in the group, because Diane wouldn't been the focus, and pushed to the front. 🤷♀️ Who knows? History is what it is. Never the less, this was a very nice song.
All those singers and musicians made better music than some disco performers and rap and hip-hop artists. At least, the Motown, Atlantic, Stax, Brunswick, and other old record labels recorded kosher and inferior music.
They've played with the turntable torque, raising the speed above 45rpm. Not only her voice but also the musical pich is changed. Radio station frequently do this gimmick to shorten the length of the songs in order to create extra commercial time.

Mary wells ,beautiful singer love her music. To me she my number 1 female artist.
Mary wells is runner up queen of soul
Mary Wells was marvelous on 20 Century Fox as she was on Motown.
She did make some terrific records after leaving Motown, but sadly her career suffered greatly by making that move.
Andantes backgrounds sounding stellar, polished and distinct.

This music was also for matured music fans. We cannot say this about rap and hip-hop music. No, that stuff was never for us, nor for me.

Here she sounds almost exactly like Diana Ross? Can someone convince me that it is really Mary Wells? I value both singers tremendously.
It's Mary Wells.

true but mary wells voice was smoother and her voice had a fuller more dynamic range and sound than Diana Ross did.

Much better than Diana in fact Diana didn't even have the best voice in the Supremes!
And so we're: Kim Weston, Brenda Holloway, Tammi Terrell and Martha Reeves and those are just the ones that were on Motown.

Nice version but Tutti Hill owned and still owns this.
The sax player sounds like fathead Newman or Phil woods
this is NOT the way the recording is suppose to sound. The voices are speeded up. This is NOT the recording.Someone has played with this.

Berry Gordy strikes again.
The original lasted for 2:37. This has been speeded up by nine seconds.

Unfortunately, the increased speed was added to lots of songs, now that the old songs have been remastered before broadcasting on UA-cam.
