"Can-can ... as if from an old gramophone record"
from Three Extravagant Dances for piano four hands,
    Anna & Dmitri Shelest, piano
The prominent Ukrainian composer, Myroslav Skoryk (1938-2020) has produced a wealth of major works, including operas, cantatas, symphonic poems, and concerti, among others. The Three Extravagant Dances show a lighter side of the composer, blending together humor with exquisite ensemble craftsmanship. Toying with the listener's expectations, the work is full of surprises. One will find the main theme of the Chopin E minor Concerto woven into the Spanish dance in the first movement; or the Antonin Dvorak New World Symphony barging in to the bluesy world of the second; or the malfunctioning record player that makes one imagine the sound of a honky tonk piano in the finale. The delight of this work leaves both performers and listeners with a smile.
