Pruning Our Neglected Lilac Bushes Before Winter

Here we are pruning our old Lilac bushes, that have not been pruned in years, they were very leggy and very few if any flowers, so we have read to trim them back to revitalize the bushes, we will see how it turns out next year.
They were trimmed from 12" to 3'.
Any tips or comments please leave them below to help the viewers and us, we are not landscaping experts so any tips will be more then welcomed:)

I love lilac bushes. Hard to grow in California. I had many when farming in Wisconsin. I loved mock orange bushes to.

Ah, reminds me of when I was a young lad and my ma had lilacs
