- Case 235: House of Horrors (Part 1)
** Warning: This case involves child victims **
[Part 1 of 3]
In early 1969, 15-year-old Rose Letts was waiting alone at a bus stop in the English town of Cheltenham when she was approached by a much older man. 27-year-old Fred West was poorly dressed, dirty, and had a mouthful of green, chipped teeth from years of neglect. While Rose found Fred repulsive, something about him excited her.
From this chance encounter, the pair initiated an intense relationship that culminated in their marriage three years later. Mr and Mrs West then settled into their ideal family home in the city of Gloucester - 25 Cromwell Street.

So good to have you back. The level of storytelling is so excellent that it makes cases you think you’re familiar with feel completely new. Brilliant work as usual!
Welcome back! Every night me and my girlfriend put on a casefile podcast to listen too in bed. Last night I went back to 'Prue Bird" just as I was about to fall asleep you were talking about the court case and all of a sudden really loud shouted something the guy did in the court room. I honestly nearly had a heart attack.
I have this playing most nights. A few times the ANNELIESE MICHEL (Case 11) episode comes on in the middle of night and jolts me awake in a sweat with the recorded possessed screaming....
@@craigoneill3104 haha, have been there
Same!
I've had that happen with this or that it is horrible to wake up that way! You're like what the...!
One of the reasons I now only listen to Victorian Edwardian ghost stories/Sherlock Holmes read aloud with no jarring sound effects! Best way to fall asleep ever!
Nothing better than you and your gf falling asleep to stories of people's deaths and suffering!
Welcome back Casefile and team! The bodum and I salute your return!
Your back!!!
So excited thank you sooo much !
Exactly what I needed to get my work done for the next few hours. 💙🌺
Thank you for saying that!!
My partner seemingly can't believe that I work & focus better with something on in the background, but I have ADHD and it really does help! Glad to see I'm not alone! 😁
2023 can now begin....so glad Ur back casefile
Casefile Team Back On The Scene!
💚💛❤️
Welcome back! I was so very happy to see a new episode! And what a surprise- I currently live in the USA, and in the USA, "House of Horrors" usually refers to either Ariel Castro from Cleveland, Ohio or the Turpin family from Perris, California. But the Wests certainly qualify for "House of Horrors" in my book!
What a pair of absolute monsters! It's hard to even imagine how human beings could possibly commit such inhuman acts!
How funny, I was thinking of the Turpin Family as well
Welcome back Casefile Team!
Soooo glad your back now my Saturday mornings will be complete haha 😂
I've missed Casefile SO MUCH.
Me too😏
Missed it more than Fred missed his kids no doubt.
Me too!
Awww! So happy to hear your again! 5🌟podcasts.
Absolutely awesome detail! 10/10 👍
Glad you are back, thank you for the vedoes and making sure that you are understood.. Love yall

I can't help but feel that Caroline's nightmare was the feelings of those girls killed and buried there, that they were trying to alert people of their whereabouts.
Thank you, been interested in your take on this case. Xx
Glad you are back 🙌
How strange is it that both Rose & Fred's moms were named Daisy?
Pretty common name back then but Yh odd coincidence
Missed case file so much.. great to have you back
Very good job of giving us this episode. Thank you for your hard work for our enjoyment. Looking forward to part 2.
Happy new year and welcome back to all the team☘️
Yay! You're back. 👏👏 ☺
Wow your back Casefile i have missed you ♥️🥰
Poor Caroline. I believe I read that she died tragically young.
If so, May her memory be a blessing. And I hope she found some measure of peace and healing in her life.
Thank god you're back 😭😭😭😭😭
I thought this was about my place after I haven't vacuumed for a week.
🤣 I'm hoovering as I listen and can totally relate! Lol
Rose and Fred have proven that there is truly someone out there for everyone.
Unfortunately Mr and Mrs Evil psychopaths
So evil beyond words.
Perth Western Australia.
Ugh! Scary but true!
I think it's like for every insane squrill, there's a real nut that's the perfect match. 😉
Yay!!!! You’re back!!!!!!!
Welcome back! This was really good!
Great work as always 👍
Jesus, the commercials!!! UA-cam has just PACKED in the commercials.
Missed you. So glad you guys are back ☆☆☆
Oh thank god you’re back!
Great one to listen to with the whole family.
lol
Out in the garden.
@@HappinosisI need the garden sorted out actually. Maybe I’ll try P.D.M contractors…
I got so excited when I saw this!!!
I missed you guys!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Wow so much I didnt know about these ppl! Excellent work telling this horrible story. RIP victims. I believe Fred's accidents did give him brain damage and brought out the worst in him. Rose was just as bad.
What the hell was wrong with Rina?!?!? And Anna?!?!? Fred was sick, literally, and able to get away with so much. Things haven't changed at all, unfortunately. Humans are generally stupid and uncaring.
I actually feel very sorry for Anna McFall. She was very young and wanted a baby , some family in her life. But Rena was older. She should have seen something was wrong with Fred and wondered how Mary Bastholm could go missing, and Anne McFall then Charmaine
This channel has shown me people are fucking nuts.
Curious, has anyone ever contacted their local crisis center due to this podcast lol? 👀
I have, after listening to Yingying Zhang murder. All of the podcasts are so sad but the delivery of that story broke me entirely! Whoever writes the scripts for casefile podcasts must have a degree in psychology.
So the cops are like…well these two are charming…there free to go…and then they go on to murder 9 other women…
Yahoo! You're back, thank-you!
See it's interesting about the head injury. I've heard that traumatic head injuries are a common theme with serial killers also look at his shift in behaviour after he was hurt.
You have been dearely missed 🤗
Dearly vs dearely
@@vashon100actually, dearely is an old and mostly unused way of spelling dearly
Fred has the smooth ,glib, fast talk of a psychopath, they're easy to spot.We all know a few if you've lived awhile.
Hmmmm, not a lot of thought or wisdom went into this comment did it?
I can honestly say Jerry, that I really don't think an overwhelming majority of civilians on the planet do know any psychopaths actually.
In fact, the reason you don't meet many psychopaths during our lives is because it's VERY hard to be diagnosed with psychopathy the reason is, back during that period of time mental health treatment was abysmal. the only people to be evaluated for mental health by doctors was those who HAD to be, for the simple fact that human beings, generally don't murder people, so it was important to discover why.
Psychopathy diagnoseses
Well thorn ,I'm an old man and pretty much know what constitutes a psychopath if you've ever dealt with one or more they show their true colors over time.
@@jerrymarshall2095 I think you're refering to people who most likely, if your analysis of them is true and none bias would be medically diagnosed as a sociopath.
To be honest, the symptoms of psychopathy are also the symptoms of many other mental health conditions including ADHD and Autism, what makes it different is a lack of empathy or remorse for a serious crime, rape, murder, armed robbery.
Not all crimes would a show of empathy be appropriate, for instance if I was hungry and stole food from a major supermarket I wont show empathy, regret maybe, but I was hungry.
So yeah, I don't think unless you're a cold blooded killer or rapist you aren't being diagnosed with psychopath.
Have you ever read the phycopath test?
@@thomasjensen1472 thorn psychiatry is in the primitive stages of understanding the human psychy.the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath are irrelevant to me and the psych community can't even agree on the differences.
Ur wrong partner,if u know or have known 100 people ur run into one.and that's an understatement.read up on it.theyre not all Ted Bundys.
The attitudes of officials and the so called justice system of that time utterly beggars belief. Defense lawyers are a breed of their own and I get that they have a job to do but I have to say, in this instance at least, I hope they were plagued by insomnia!! This case is no stranger to me but listening to it here just reminds of how sad and horrific life is for some people. I'd like to think things have improved by now in terms of justice and (mental) health, but suspect we've still a long way to go.
Why would you stay with a crazy man who abused you and the children??!
Her Mom was getting ECT (electro- shock therapy) when she was in utero.....that poor girl never had a chance......
@@mariapower9979I guess the comment referred to Rina, not Rose. Remember, Fred effed off on occasion leaving her to fend for herself. And Rina didn't like his 'kinky preferences', while Rose seemed to be into it. I agree, Rose was, well, damaged from the start, due to the treatment her mother received while she was pregnant with Rose, and her father's OCD likely didn't help matters. But with Rina the question remains, as to why she returned to Fred time and time again before finally fleeing him for good - without her children.
In the beginning of the video but they mentioned a head injury. The one thing basicly ALL serial killers have in common is a head injury
Too many ads!!
His first wife is no better, because she abandoned her kids!!
I have to agree.
Missed you on the night shift at work
As to post natal depression and treatment for depression , which are life threatening disorders can be varied however for treatment resistant depression ECT is best treatment
Language creates stigma
Let’s shatter the stigma
Today
Daisy was medicated by drs not drugged by crooks
Yes she had 8 ECT
The standard treatment is 8 to 12 with a day between
Anaesthetic is used a seizure is required under anaesthetics
for best results of treatment
One day we may have a better treatment for depression and no doubt history shows a tortuous relationship of those suffering mental illness
Let’s ensure our language shatters the stigma
Because stigma and fear
stops people seeking help
Just saying
😊
If a baby acts like that, why didn’t she get medical help??!
Good question, but in order to get medical help, you have to go see a doctor, or in this case take your child to be seen by one...
And perhaps after the medical treatment the mother received, they no longer trusted them. Or, seeing that at the time mental illness wasn't something people easily accepted, if at all, and after the mother had already been diagnosed with depression and the father suffered from OCD, perhaps they simply didn't want to be dubbed as a completely crazy family and just hoped their daughters steange behaviour right from the start would go unnoticed if they just kept their mouths shut. Bach then, pre- and antenatal care wasn't the same as it is today. It did exist, but with growing awareness to both abuse and mental illness, the monitoring of the behaviour and development of young children has become much better.
1:31:29 so sad, but damn, cmon now. Why get in the car with these ppl?! Its crazy how many of these older stories involve hitchhiking smh. Nowadays you cant even OFFER a ride to someone, cos you immediately get red flagged as s weirdo, rightly so lol
26:46 GROSS! HOW???!!!
Back in town 😎
How I always go to sleep when my husband's out

This one will be more than a couple of episodes.
Hope you had an invigorating hiatus. Another disturbing tale
Complete and total disorder.

Already covered this story before but whatever…
How long ago? I don’t remember this on before.
@@danrobinson572 my mistake, I confused this case with Ian Brady and myra hindley
@@copcam7875 okay 👍 no problem got me thinking 💭 myself haha 😂
This channel has plied the leftist speak incessantly. Its getting sickening
Why didn’t the girls go back to their mother instead of the state??!
Because her leaving without her children could be considered an abandonment on her part. And unfortunately, to an outsider such as social services, with Fred's additional sobstories, that is what it must have looked like, regardless of what she was saying.
1:16:28 gross...poor Elizabeth
On it!
Aww Sandhurst got a mention 🙃 it's also 5 mins away from the infamous Boardmoor Hospital.
Justin failed even back than.
You did this same multi part shit last year too. It's annoying that you can't condense it enough to just make a single stand alone. I won't listen until all parts are in.
Why are toy talking like that? Extending the last word of every sentence

One of the very worst episodes. Why on Earth would Casefile bore their fans with FIVE HOURS of common domestic violence.
It's one of the UK'S worst and most infamous serial killer cases.
