I've studied this extensively and have come to the conclusion that He was crucified on Wednesday, and buried at dusk just prior to Passover beginning at sunset. Wednesday night thru Thursday was the first day. Thursday night thru Friday was the 2nd day. And then Friday night thru Saturday was the 3rd day. Jesus was resurrected Saturday at dusk, exactly 3 days AND 3 nights as He said.
I've seen people try to argue that any part of a day is considered a day. However, when the expression "3 days AND 3 nights" is included together, it means an entire 3 days and 3 nights. A Wednesday crucifixion is the only possible time frame.
Also, we have the statement that the women went out and bought spices to prepare for his body. The only time this could have occurred was between the 2 sabbaths, the first day of Unleavened Bread on Thursday, and then the weekly sabbath on Saturday. They had to have bought spices on Friday, the only day they could have bought the spices. Some have argued that the spices were bought Saturday night after the weekly sabbath was over. But this is not possible. We are told in Luke 23:56 "And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment." If they bough spices after the weekly sabbath then how could they have rested for the weekly sabbath? Impossible.
The only possible explanation is that He was crucified on Wednesday and was resurrected at dusk on Saturday night.

I used to be a member of the Worldwide Church of God, And this is what we used to believe. Cause it means that Jesus was wandering around or Saturday night or maybe was in the tomb until Sunday morning… So that seems like a very strange and lonely time for him.
But, this seems to be pretty much the only timeline that makes sense.
There is some scripture somewhere that says something like quote he will be cut off in the midst of the week.”

@@johnnyxmusic Yes, H.W.A. had it as you said, he also believed the Jews by Christs time had the time of the Passover wrong in that they should have been killing the lambs in the beginning of the 14 rather than the end of the 14. He had come to that conclusion, through re interpreting the instructions in Exodus, because of the accounts in the synoptic gospels which has Jesus eating the Passover meal the beginning of the 14th rather than the beginning of the 15th. John of course calls it the last supper, not the Passover. My conclusion is that they must have had a Passover meal one day early. Christ did actually die about the time Passover lambs were to be killed, before the 15th, the annual sabbath which I suspect fell on the weekly sabbath that year as can happen. Due to the fact the disciples said it is now the third day Luke 24:21, I tend to think that this was one of the times the annual sabbath and the weekly sabbath coincided. I suspect the term, "three days and three nights" is idiom for three days rather than an exact 72 hours.
If in fact Jesus was crucified in a year the two sabbaths coincided, it shouldn't be to hard to know the exact year in that decade.
James Tabor has mentioned his awareness of H.W.A. and is familiar with Earnest Martins ideas. I am under the impression Tabor had some contact with Martin.

@@wilfredmancy I don’t recall all of the exact details. Certainly there does seem to be some shifting around the idea of how the last supper was a pass over meal etc. etc. And the slipperiness of the Sabbath or if there’s two Sabatte’s that we score the exact timing of it. But there’s a passage where it says the only sign that should be given is the sign of Jonah… Just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the big fish so Jesus will be three days and three nights in the heart of the Earth.
Are these things important? I don’t know. Are they ways to set True believers apart from sort of believers? I don’t know. Are Christian supposed to be keeping Saturday is the sabbath day because it’s an eternal covenant? Or do we say it doesn’t matter? Or now we celebrate the Lords day because Jesus rose on Sunday even though there’s a reason to believe that he actually Rose on Saturday before sunset.
And what about celebrating Christmas which is not in the Bible. And certainly Jesus was not born on December 25. Maybe when Jesus returns he’ll come and say oh you guys did a pretty good job let’s celebrate and here’s the kingdom. I don’t know.
I step back for most of this stuff as a way of preserving my mental health. Although it seems that true devotion to a spiritual path requires a certain kind of insanity, or at least dedication and devotion to the point where you’re Kind of uncomfortable at certain times.

@@johnnyxmusic Yes, I agree, we need to know our uncertainties , and step back from having to be sure when we know we aren't sure, to not trouble ourselves to much, we can still be curious and interested of course.
Our faith did center on the need to observe the Sabbath to be faithful to Christ, certainly in my mind it did.
I now think that the sabbath was Gods' sign on the old covenant Ezekiel 20:12, 20, and now see it as a shadow or sign of a coming reality Col. 2:16,17, that our rest is in Jesus, Matt.11:28. That Jesus is our rest.
None the less I find allowing my self a weekly day of rest good for mental health and happiness.
John 19: 31 indicates the looming sabbath was a special sabbath, which it was, the 15th, but was it also a weekly sabbath?
Dec the 25th wasn't Jesus' birthday. It has been argued though that it is the day the wise men came to worship him about 15 months after his birth, hence Herod killing the boys up to 2 years old.
Good luck with the jig saw puzzle.

    • @johnnyxmusic
      @johnnyxmusic Рік тому +1

@@wilfredmancy There are some interesting narratives about Jesus birth. Anyway… I totally agree about the wisemen not being there at the birth. But some sources say that the manger that Jesus was born in was this special tower or the base of the special tower where are the special sacrificial lambs for the temple or captain watched out for. I mean… That’s really cool if it happened like that.
And then someone says well there’s a famous Evangelical guy who says that the blood from Jesus on the cross on Golda to dripped all the Way down to the mercy seat of the ark of the covenant and so Jesus’ blood it’s like the blood of the perfect sacrifice in all of that stuff. Again, fantastic poetry if it happened that way.

As a layman agnostic, the more I learn about Christianity, the more I see it as first century Jewish apocolypticism - debates, arguments, philosophies, etc. Sounds to me like they are all talking about a political "savior" coming soon to lead the Jews and establish Israel as a nation-kingdom and free themselves of the Roman Empire. Frankly I don't see how it applies to my life in the 21st century. Not trying to insult anyone. Just my honest thoughts.

As citizens of an at least nominal democracy with notions of due process and rights of the accused, we seriously underestimate how little provocation the Romans needed to execute someone. A moral reformer could be executed merely for being popular. Popularity is a kind of power that the Romans were always jealous of. Scholars have suggested this as the real reason for John the Baptist getting executed. John Dominic Crossan has said that Jesus was probably in this category. He thinks that if the movement had been trying to set up a government or overthrow Roman rule, there would have been 13 crosses, not one. That seems right to me. Whether there were 13 crosses or not, a political movement would have gotten the hell out of Jerusalem. We have evidence from Paul and Josephus that they didn’t.

I *know* there's a meditative experience that can last seven days. i think Jesus led the rebellion in 65 CE; he was a military man, Jesus ben Judas.
The lesson for today is how we can all be misled, that the brain started as a comfort finder and is in us becoming a coherence detector, and there might actually be a person Truth and we in community His body.

I would love to see a TV series that shows the Gospels the way the EASTERN Orthodox know them to be in reality. The WEST changed the calendar and the time the day starts, plus many other spurious innovations. Then people get a news flash that these Western Innovations don't add up. No kidding. Go look at the 60 Minutes documentary on Mout Athos that is readily available on UA-cam and learn something about ancient Christians that exist even today in the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith. Bob Simon did the documentary, and it is concise and to the point. The Western Church split from the Eastern Church towards the end of the First Millennium and then continues innovations ans further splits and reforms continued in the West until the doctrines, practices, and approach radically changed from the Apostles teachings. Some ministers get back to the correct interpretation and practice, and then you have entire communities in the West rejoining the Orthodox Church. Celibacy was never meant for all priests, and only monk priests did that. This has remained the same in Orthodoxy from day one, but the Roman Catholics made it mandatory, and the Protestants abandoned it. This is but one example of the deviations. The other is the calendar, the true Orthodox like on Athos kept the Ancient Julian Calendar, and the West went with Pope Gregory's innovation. I could go on, but you get the idea.

The scripture in Daniel about "oblation being cut off in the midst of the week, usually attributed to the AC, is the crucifixion on the 4th day (Wednesday) which gives 3 full days and nights for Yahoshua to rise up on Shabbat. When Miriam (Mary) went to the tomb he had already risen on the Sabbath !

I am not a Christian, and I am unsure if I am nitpicking here, James, but according to Jewish law, the first day of Passover-also known as Pesach-is not a Sabbath. However, it has many restrictions similar to those of the Sabbath. Jews would not call it a Sabbath. The funerals are generally not held on the festival days of Passover so if it was 30 CE there would be a rush to bury him immediately before the Passover.

It is entirely possible and valid for the literality of the Eucharist to not be important to you at all. As usual, Dr. Tabor is not trying to validate or invalidate a specific custom or belief, but is instead exploring the historicity of certain ideas through a historically materialist lense. In doing so, we can get a fascinating perspective on how we may view history in inverted ways. Discussing the progenitorship of Paul can invert how we see the influences that affected the authors of the Gospels, which is, in itself, utterly fascinating.

Jesus did celebrate the passover, but according to the essene calendar in the year 33AD.
Jesus and the apostles left Bethany and entered Jerusalem on Sunday riding on a donkey (9th of Nisan Jewish calendar date). Jesus and his followers probably forced his entourage before the procession of the high priest behind him who ceremonially carried the passover lamb from Bethlehem on that same hour.
arrangements were made to stay for the preparation of the passover at the essene quarter. this was done by following an essene carrying a jar of water that Monday (10th of Nisan).
they were still staying in an upper room in the essene quarter and celebrated the Passover (11th of Nisan) and feast of unleavened bread according to the calendar of the Essenes (12th of Nisan). Jesus and the apostles probably finished the meal at 9 and went to the garden of gethsemane. he was most likely arrested around 10 or 11pm. he would have been taken to the house of annas, the high priest and went through the kangaroo court of the sadducees around midnight and thrown in the dungeon that night. his formal trial before the Sanhedrin and caiaphas at the hall of hewn stone would have been on the 12th of Nisan after the trumpet of the first tamid. he would have been detained again at the dungeon of annas (13th of Nisan).
he would have been taken before pilate in the praetorium (palace complex of Herod where the 2 palaces were situated).
Jesus was probably cross examined by pilate in the morning and passed on to Herod after lunch on the opposite palace. he was probably held in detention that night inside the barracks behind pilate's palace, 14th of Nisan.
Jesus was then presented to the crowd outside the southern gate of the palace complex with barabas, at the judgment seat. he was sentenced and scourged in the morning of 14th of Nisan and carried the cross beam to calvary, an 8-15 minute walk, probably more in Jesus case. it is more probable that Jesus and the two thieves were led out by the north gate and walked along the street by the north wall of the palace complex to the site of the present holy sepulcher which was a rock quarry and garden and tombs. this area was not enclosed by the Third wall by Agrippa I until 41-44AD. Jesus expired on 14th of Nisan just as the horn of the second tamid was blown and the signal to slaughter the passover lambs was heard.
the chronology of and logistics of events becomes more practical and reasonable, especially for men of power like pilate and Herod. the narrative of the gospel narrative becomes realistic in this reconstructed timeline of events. the apparent contradictory accounts of mark and John confused people for the longest time. only with the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls are we now able to understand that two calendars were in operation and that everything happened according to the narrative and we are able to deduce the exact dates. furthermore, circumstantial evidence points to the humble brag of mark that he was the youth who fled naked that night and that he was most likely an essene and a scribe. mark narrates according to his calendar, the calendar of the Essenes. while John narrates according to the jewish calendar.

Jesus was announced as king of Israel in that choice between Jesus and Barabbas. Quickly said, Pilot dressed Jesus up as King, Pilot presented Jesus to the Sanhedrin and high priest among the crowd as "their King". Told the crowd to choose to crucify "their King" or Barabbas. The Saducees and High Priest chose "their king" Jesus to be crucified and instigated the Jewish crowd to choose "their King" to be crucified..... and so the Priesthood anointed Jesus as their king in order for him to be executed. And Pilat published this fact above Jesus head at a time when Jerusalem was most crowded of Jews from all over the realm.
What this accomplished was to legalize according to Torah law Jesus' amended covenant and make irrelevant all burdensome Talmudic rules.
I think Jesus and Pilat planned it together. Neet trick on the Sanhedrin huh.

He got it from someone. Seems unlikely that he would have lied about it - but he did have a meeting with the disciples at one point to confirm correct teaching, so he says. According to Tabor, I guess John was under the spell of Paul too? Although it makes more sense to read John as a later gospel that does not attempt to restate what has already been written. It was apparently written as a supplement to existing writings. This of course undermines Tabor's use of it to somehow disprove the authenticity of the body and blood "in remembrance of me". If John authentically does not include the eucharistic ritual, how does he inauthentically include this "hard teaching" that accords with Paul? Also, the Didache's lack of eucharistic prayer can be explained in the same way that John's retelling of the Last Supper can be: the Didache is not teaching and demonstrating everything but instead is covering just some topics. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

In regards to Pauline influence on the understanding of the Lord's supper, what do you think about John 6 "I am the bread of Life", John 1:1 "In the beginning was the word/teaching and the word/teaching was..." and 1John 1:1-2 "the word/teaching of life"
Jesus says he is the way, truth and life (the teaching, the torah) Judaism teaches from long ago the teaching/wisdom/logos god gave was with him from the beginning (proverbs 8), not that jesus literally preexisted, but that he is a perfect reflection or representation of Gods character and personality. The torah was imprinted on him from birth and he never knew sin. In John 6 jesus states he is the bread of life, the promise of eternal life god gave in the garden to adam and eve, the tree of life. This promise was made manifest when jesus put on incorruption at his ressurection, and all the disciples beheld an eternal body and witnessed with their own eyes the firstfruits of the promise of eternal life for us.
Its hard to imagine the lords supper not being a jewish development, they take the kiddush bread and wine and make it the sinless body of christ, unleavened, not literally eating his flesh but metaphorically we take in his teachings and it feeds us, marks us for the resurrection to life eternal. It really isnt a stretch for any jew except modern jesus weary jews. The bread is his body, his teaching, pure, no leaven from the pharisees or saducees, the wine is his blood, poured out so that when we remember, we are convicted of our sins, that because of our sins an innocent man, who could have ushered in the kingdom right there, had to die because of our ignorant actions. And he won't be back until we declare blessed is he who comes in the name of YHWH. We mourn for this great and catastrophic loss the same as if we lost a son, and we reflect on how our actions and sins cause the wrong men to be killed or tormented. By realizing we create this injustice, and we repent, and sin no more, then we are forgiven of our sins. This is the bread and the wine, very jewish, very rabbinic/pharisaic, and only modern judaism sees it as strange.

He had the passover meal, this is after sunset of the 14th day. He is taken by priest guards early in the morning, still the 14th. Later, same day, he is crucified and gives up the ghost at the 9th hour. Before the Sabbath, before sunset, he is placed in the tomb. He rest on the Sabbath and God raised him early on the 1st day of the week. So, we have the 14th, 15th (Sabbath) and the 16th resurrection. I suggest you read Matthew Ch 26-27, Mark Ch 14-16, Luke Ch 22-24 and John Ch 18-20 kjv. Understanding the Book of John, the Jews would have stoned Yeshua if it were not for the day of Passover....so, they could not put him to death, this is why they needed the Romans to do the deed. So, the three days are 14th (Friday) 15th (Sabbath) and 16th (first Day of the Week). Peace!

This is based on Barbara Thiering''s REVISIONIST chronology in her book "Jesus the Man". EITHER way, IF Jesus HAD been crucified on Thursday instead of Friday, he WOULD NOT have spent THREE DAYS in the tomb, since he "AROSE" early on SUNDAY BEFORE dawn. There is also the symbolism involved of Jesus DYING on the SIXTH Day of the week to SAVE Humanity from the doom of Damnation in parallel to the CREATION of Humanity on the "Cosmic" SIXTH Day. I'm not an expert in Levitical Judaism, BUT there are several other indications I will casually mention that the Prof can correct me about if I'm wrong; though he HASN'T ever responded to ANY of my other NUMEROUS previous posts on his many other videos that I have reviewed. The Sabbath of course as we are all familiar with who have any cultural if not religious association with Judeo-Christianity, was a day of REST on which NO work was allowed. Therefore, according to the "Gospels" (particularly "John's") it was NECESSARY that the preparations for the coming Passover be made on the day PRIOR TO the Sabbath. THIS is because Jews eat the Pesach Feast at MIDNIGHT, when the "Angel of the Lord" was said to have passed through the land of Egypt destroying the first-born of the Egyptians. While THIS was happening, the Hebrews were FEASTING SAFELY ensconced in their houses with the blood of the lambs smeared on their doorposts to prevent the Destroying Angel from attacking them. SUNDOWN for JEWS is the BEGINNING of the NEXT DAY, so the SABBATH would have ALREADY BEGUN by the time they were doing this. Therefore, they COULD NOT work to prepare the feast AFTER SUNSET. The NEXT DAY, according to the "Book of Exodus", Moses and Aaron went to Pharoah who told them to leave the land. They WOULD NOT have traveled in the DARK of NIGHT and ESPECIALLY, as according to the ANCIENT Hebrew calendar of the Passover, on a 🌑 night ! There was NO problem with WORKING the DAY of the PASSOVER, IF NOT a SABBATH of the SEVENTH Day, because it was ON THAT day that the Hebrews PACKED UP their possessions (work) and TRAVELED OUT of Egypt. Jews were NOT allowed to TRAVEL a FULL DAY'S journey on the Sabbath, so THAT would have made the EXODUS IMpossible IF it had occurred on THAT day of the week. Since Jews AREN'T allowed to WORK on the SABBATH, they PREPARE the next day's (Saturday's) meals of breakfast, lunch, and supper on FRIDAYS. IF the Passover of that particular year, WHICHEVER it was, had NOT been on a SABBATH/Saturday, they COULD have worked and traveled a full day. The "PREPARATION Day" mentioned by John WAS NOT the preparation day for the PASSOVER, but FOR the SABBATH; and WOULD have been the PREPARATION DAY regardless IF it had NOT been the Passover!! It was simply about PREPARING things that would OTHERWISE have been DONE the NEXT day as ANY other normal work day. Therefore, the TRADITIONAL interpretation of the Crucifixion Day as being on the FRIDAY of the PREPARATION DAY just before the SABBATH, REGARDLESS of it being the Passover, STILL APPLIES. HOWEVER, I think there WERE TWO "coincidental" reasons Jesus could NOT have been crucified on the next day of SATURDAY. ONE of course is that it WAS the SABBATH, and executions as well as ALL punishments to be inflicted (work) had to be SUSPENDED. BUT furthermore, punishments were NOT allowed to be inflicted on HOLY FESTIVAL days and they were therefore "Days of Reprieve". This being the case, it is OBVIOUS ANYWAY that Jesus and his disciples would NOT and COULD not have eaten the Feast on FRIDAY NIGHT because he had already been CRUCIFIED and was DEAD! So, FOR THEM, it HAD to be on the Thursday night; the TRADITIONAL day of the event for Christians. There is NO point in putting it on Wednesday night because, IF so, then WHAT were they doing on THURSDAY? The "Gospels" ALL AGREE in stating Jesus was betrayed AND arrested THE SAME NIGHT they ATE the "Last Supper". To claim that Jesus celebrated it and got arrested on WEDNESDAY night supports the absurd and "UNrecorded" claim that Jesus was "IMPRISONED" for a day and night awaiting his execution!! There is NOTHING, at least in ANY of the "canonical Gospels" (ESPECIALLY the "Johannine EYEWITNESS" one), to support that detail. It IS admittedly an ancient one, and "Pilate's Prison" of Jesus, allegedly commemorated as part of the church of the Holy Sepulchre(?!) by the emperor Constantine, is STILL SHOWN as PART of the Mythos. But it was just created to EXTEND the duration of the entire ALLEGED event and ENHANCE the drama. The BASIC "Gospel" narrative sequence is that Jesus ate the "Last Supper" establishing its significance as the symbol of the "New Covenant" and predicting what was SOON to occur following it; went out to pray where he was betrayed and arrested; taken to the former chief priest Annanias for a "pre-interrogation" UNofficial interview; THEN brought to the "official" Chief Priest Joseph Caiphas where he was judged and condemned to death; taken BEFORE morning to Pilate for confirmation of the conviction; and THEN sent to execution. It was a QUICK-PACED, "rapid-fire" scenario made to keep the suspense and tension of the drama heightened. There was NO "lag time" of waiting OR imprisonment. THAT would have WEAKENED the intensity of the drama and been a DRAG.

Paul also drops Sarah name but uses Hagar; this is not a Jewish tradition, but Thracian and Greek. In fact, by naming Hagar, she become more significant as she is a real entity and it become a dig of removal of Sarah...As well, the crucifiction: Jesus mother is a no name, and she is not mentioned in any of the other crucifiction stories as being present...She was inserted to down-play the real importance of Mariam Magdela (the Tower of Faith)...The no-name mother of John and the no name mother Sarah in all likelihood had the same redactor.

He had to be off the cross before 6pm when Tuursday Passover began, which is the evening the passover meal was eaten... so Jesus last supper was after sunset Tuesday which is after Wednsday had begun.

Tabor labors the commonplace observation that there is no record of 'the' Eucharist' in the fourth gospel, comparable to what we find in Paul (I Corinthians) and the synoptics. But he neglects the extended discourse following the 'Eucharistic' miracle story, The Feeding Of The Five Thousand, (John 6.1-14). It contains the dominical logion '"I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.'" (6.35); and continues: ''The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, "I am the bread which came down from heaven." (v 41)
'The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat" So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed and my blood is drink indeed. "(vv 52-56).
This is piss poor, and incomplete at that, a complete waste of time. The working premise is category mistaken - scripture isn't history in the first instance, but theology. Next time, concern yourself with 'theological' truth perhaps.

Dr Tabor I'm very astonished, you still stick so literal to the text.
Did it ever occur to you that the story of the Last Supper is a way to explain Passover for the proselytes? That accounts for all Synoptic Gospels.
Did it ever occur to you that 1 Corinthians 11 is not from Paul?
Did you ever notice that this text is about the establishment of the Christian community and not about theological concepts of the eucharist or the protestant's version of those?
Did you ever notice that the theological interpretation of the eucharist is founded by John of Damascus, the last Greek Church-father?
More important did you ever read or heard of the theory that Judas Iscariot is a concept that appeared first in Mark? Bishop Spong +, shows a very solid and well-thought-out explanation why Judas is not historical and can't be.
Did you ever notice that Paul never ever talks about a betrayal by Judas? It would be very logical that something like that would be remembered.
Did you ever notice that the so-called entrance in Jerusalem of Jesus doesn't fit within the Jewish liturgical order of the festivals? In that way it is very interesting to notice that (real) Paul never tells about the Pesach as the timeframe wherein Jesus was executed. Moreover he tells in Philippians that he was the perfect sacrifice, a word that does reflect the Lamb without corruption used at Jom Kippoer. And that explains the idea that he became the Lamb of God, that takes up all the sins of the world. Given the idea that the Gospels (synoptic) follow the Jewish liturgical calendar, then Mark is very interesting. He begins with baptism/mikwah and ends with Pesach. And who does say or denotes Jesus as the Lamb of God? Yes John the Baptist or the Forerunner. It is very clear to me that the story of the last supper is a created story as is the story about Judas. Judas is just the scapegoat not to accuse the Romans for Jesus death and to cover-up the verdict of Jesus to be convicted as a state-criminal. The Holy Week is just a summary of the life of Jesus: Palm Sunday being the entrance of the king in Jerusalem (Rosh Hashanah) and ending in Pesach.
There are to much open ends to be sure that those Gospels are historical records. In my opinion they are no historical records but a catechesis for the proselytes and written after the destruction of the Temple/Jerusalem. But when you read them as a catechesis, then suddenly it makes all sense.

    Dear James,
thank you for your working on historical Jesus. Maybe you can proof, if Jesus not dies on passover but on sukkot. This will solving some problems in the text of Mark 11 -13. For example the green twigs (gr. stibadas in Mk 11,8), or the fig tree, which has no friuts but foliage (Mk 11,13) and shall get green again in Summer (Mk13,28). Or the allegory of the bad winemakers makes more sense in autumn instead of spring (Mk12,1-12). Maybe the chapters Mk 11-13 are an jewish Midrasch to the book of the prophet Sacharja. And maybe, this is my opinion, the speaker of this Midrasch ist James the Just. He does it in the area of the Jerusalem temple until he is murdered in 63 AD. After his death it would be translated in Greek and Mk found it in one source of his gospel and composed it in his sight of view.

I do not understand the logic. Passover frequently falls on a Friday. Also, though Passover is a holiday, I have never heard of it referred to as a Sabbath day. In fact, there is no prohibition against working during Passover which, do not forget, is a holiday that lasts for eight days.
Furthermore, the Sabbath is not on a Saturday. The Sabbath begins Friday at sundown. So if there was a rush to get Jesus buried, it had to happen before sundown Friday. That would suggest the crucifixion took place Friday morning...

Jesus died on a Friday afternoon, at 3pm by our time. He was buried immediately at the nearby tomb (about 3:30pm) and at 6pm it was the beginning of Saturday, the day of Passover. So He was in the tomb (part of) Friday, all of Saturday and part of Sunday as He rose at dawn on Sunday morning, the 3rd day. The eating of the Messiah tradition goes back to God's incarnation among the cat people of old, when he made his first voluntary sacrifice to feed his family after he was lame and could no longer lead their pack in the hunt. That pattern was repeated many times, in the age of Taurus by the centaur Messiah Chiron/Enkidu who sacrificed himself to protect his protege Herakles/Gilgamesh and by the much maligned Goat Messiah Ba-El, who led the recovery of civilization following the Bronze Age collapse till his ritual sacrifice by the new chosen tribe he had lifted up out of slavery.
