Fun Fact: Most bats have vision comparable to humans. They use their echolocation *because* they're nocturnal. If a bat is out during the day or in a lighted area, like your house, you'll notice they're pretty quiet.
Kind a interesting. In Batman/Superman World's Finest, he specifically told Lex Luthor that Wayne Tech products will never be used for military purposes. Maybe he made that decision after seeing how the Penguin brought so much destruction to Gotham with his product.
@@srstriker6420 BOOM Right there, there's a batman movie, and you bring in Harvey Dent to set up him becoming Two-Face. A Crime Noir with Detective Batman trying to take down the mob.
I always felt that the Penguin was the most underused villain of B:TAS. While all other major classic villains always had episodes centered around them with plots that can only work with them (for example if you saw an episode of the Joker, Two Face or Poison Ivy that episode was impossible to do with other villain, it was always centered around the villains' personality and m.o.). Not the case of the Penguin. You can pretty much change the Penguin in all episodes he's in by other villain and/or a common mobster and nothing changes. Do you really think this episode could not work exactly the same with the Joker or Rupert Thorne? And same with almost all other. I think the only one were truly can't work with another villain is Bird of a Feather. It was like the writers always though plot first Penguin later like: "Well, we need a villain for this episode were Batman is blind/were Batman is a some kid detective basemant etc" hey lets use the Penguin.
Ironically, most bats have very good eye-sight. Only the smaller species of bats use echolocation as their main means of orienting themselves. Bigger bats can see better than humans. Sight is a blessing and a curse, however, because sight can override echolocation signals. For instance, a bat may fly into a window because it sees light outside, even if echolocation tells it the surface is solid.
How very interesting. Imagine if we had no mechanism with in ourselves to distinguish glass panes... well, sometimes that mechanism malfunctions for us too, eh? Te he.
4:02---LOL. The classic Donatello from TMNT playing the henchman here (and I'm pretty sure the pilot may've been a character redesign of Ray from THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS (of course that could just be my "Toon-Nerd" radar on the fritz)
Tbh, this was always one of the more memorable episodes for me, because not only does it put batman in an incredibly vulnerable position, but The Penguin actually takes a moment to figure out that Batman is blind, and once he does, things suddenly become more terrifying, because he now knows he has a leg up on Batman for once, and he uses every bit of it to his advantage. He still loses, but the tension and terror from that scene made it especially memorable, because any lesser cartoon would've just made The Penguin play dumb and never really figure it out because he's not really one of Batman's "big bads", he's more like a mini boss in some ways, but the fact that he was given a chance to figure things out for himself, made him feel more real and compelling, despite not being the most threatening villain on Batman's roster most of the time. Just another example of this show's incredible maturity.
Batman is quite a fascinating hero and arguably one of the best DC has to offer. I for one appreciate the fact that the writers wanted to utilize a vulnerable and precarious situation that did not involve the psyche but rather Batman's senses and ability to adapt to the new circumstances when creating this episode. Bruce Wayne's injury directly impacts Batman and a disability, although temporary, was significant enough to warrant the acceptance and severity of his newly inflicted handicap. Bruce Wayne in this episode really demonstrates his ability to rely on assistance from both Dr. Thompkins and Mr. Pennyworth while also doing all that he can independently by himself. It is a rare state of vulnerability that is seen throughout the show and yet it is executed beautifully. His disability transcends directly to Batman's abilities and the fight appears to be 'realistic' given the blindness and no previous knowledge of the factory layout. The fact that Batman did not die and was able to defeat the Penguin is a remarkable feat in and of itself (let allow create a whole new device by scratch). I wish more modern retellings of Batman animated episodes or comic books utilized disability or illness as this episode does. Batman is only human and it adds an additional dimension to his character that is rarely seen. This is a brilliant and beautiful episode that does a remarkable job of portraying a disability even if temporary. Bravo DC 👏🌟!!
One of the things that were marked on my mind ever since I saw this episode all those years back, was that this is Batman at his most vulnerable, Pinguin even says so himself, at the very end we even see Batman crying, most likely out of frustation after all he has survived and acomplished as The Dark Knight, this was almost the way everything was gonna end: cowering, hiding, running away; Batman thought he had failed, failed Gotham, failed his parents and failed himself, it shows Batman almost broken but also one of the times we had seen him at his most human side, even if he is this legend in the city of Gotham he is still man, he can bleed he can fall and even die. And is at those moments when everything seems lost that he finds a way to puts himself together an pull through, other wise there woudln't be a point in him doning tha cowl, Batman always finds a way were everyone else would give up.
Penguin: You're blind as a bat, sightless and- Batman: Actually, bats can see very well. Echolocation is just an extension of their sight. Penguin: Hey, I'm an expert on birds, not winged vermin like you! Batman: Aren't birds winged vermin too? Penguin: Grrrr, curse you, Batman! Even when blind, your quips still sting!
It's actually a pretty common premise for a show. This is probably 1 of the best versions I've seen of it. One of my other favorites is when they did this same basic thing on Darkwing Duck .
Batman has his Father's eyes when Thomas is Batman. I like the idea of using awesome technology to fight what I consider The Penguins most dangerous episode. The animation of red is badass. But like his training taught him. He needs to use his mind and not sight. I like this episode a lot!
He was talking about Dreams in Darkness in the VO while showing iconic scenes from that episode, including the pengiun exploding into two face and the giant magnum rising up. He uses this technique often whenever he mentions other episodes.
As a dude who's friends with blind folk i would say this episode brings the context "a victory does not need to be seen but the defeat of a villian is a sight to the blind"
I would make fun of the penguin for loosing to a blind barman, but once in a paintball field I was shooted by a blind guy so I’m not the best one to make fun of him
This is one of my favorite episodes of the series though there have been other similar stories of characters going blind temporarily and having to overcome that handicap. Beast Wars did it too with the eyes of the characters... and Rattrap's mouth turning white. Apparently the reason for why Rattrap's mouth turned white too is because they designed the CGI model with a red glow inside his head originally which lit up the eyes and mouth so there was literally no way to only turn his eyes white with the way his character model was built. On the plus side this only effects his robot mode and they spend most of the episode in beast mode so it's not too distracting.
Fun Fact:It's possible that due to this incident, Bruce Wayne shut down Lex Luthor's idea about the Wayne/Lex T-7 being used in warfare as seen in the Superman TAS "World's Finest".
There are 2 other things that may have influenced this episode. Ladybird books published 4 Batman books in 1989, and the Penguin appears in “The Warhawk”, where he steals an airplane with military upgrades while it is being modelled for Bruce Wayne. The other is James Bond (who influences many episodes if you know where to look). The opening scenes of Goldeneye see a militarily advanced helicopter being stolen. I do enjoy this episode, as it is dark and haunting at points. And as someone with low vision, you feel included a little bit more.
A good review on a unique and well written episode! I do kind of feel that the techno-babble could have been handled by Alfred, if you imagine him looking at some hastily drawn specs for the helmet and asking to clarify what they did, rather then Bruce asking the doctor if she did what he asked, which sounded a little stilted.
I suspect that an advanced version of the vision system used in this episode is a major part of Batman Beyond, with similar red shades being used in both the batsuit's optics and the batmobile's sensors.
What do you mean this is the closest The Penguin has come to taking Batman down? I thought the closest he came was with poisoned hummingbirds and a belligerent cassowary! 😁🤪

You know, I get that this episode has an interesting premise and it's nice to see Batman be so vulnerable even against ordinary foes, but there are two major problems that destroy it. First off, why was Wayne Tech allowed to build something for the military? It's not like Bruce is Tony Stark, who undergoes character development upon becoming Iron Man. Bruce's spoiled rich self died with his parents. He would never approve of state of the art weapons just so the United States could get an edge in air superiority. Second, why was Batman so insistent on going after Penguin despite the risk of permanent blindness? Yes, the crook was in possession of a dangerous attack copter and the ransom was to be paid in a day, but couldn't Batman call, I don't know, ROBIN to take the mission instead? I doubt Dick wouldn't have been taught to fly the Bat-Plane in case his mentor was unavailable.

This was my first Batman episode I was like 4
Darkwing Duck made an episode like this before BTAS
Maybe those red eyes must’ve influenced the design for Thomas Wayne’s batman

Employee: "How about The Bat?"
Bruce: "Then the Joker will want to blow it up"
Employee: "Fine, never mind the fancy name. We'll just go with it's production number: RXJG MK 2"
Bruce: MK 2?! Do you want Two Face to show up?!
Employee: "I hate this city..."
