I have a 4 1/2 Barnes lathe. Purchased it from an auctioneer who had it for 35 years. It didn’t take much to get it going. Basically took it apart and cleaned it up. I did convert it to electric. It runs excellent and is very accurate for its age.

Back in the day the Barnes 4 1/2 was the farmers work horse. A good little machine that usually saw very little use. So today they're almost always in fair to good shape. Did you get any of the peddle parts? They're worth as much as the lathe

No, just the legs and original flywheel. The previous owner said he thought he had everything, but as of this month hasn’t found. Maybe he will run across them. The treadle and original tool post are hard to come by. I also found a 3 jaw chuck original. 7/8-10 is almost impossible to come by. Not much out there on Barnes, you and Troll Forge are about it. Nor the seat but I have one from a tractor that will do.

@@Miner-49 well you did get the legs. There's a lot of leg thieves out there and the pulley can be the money shot, costs the most. So all in all you have a pretty complete machine

Yes, about 98% complete with all original parts. I’m happy considering I only have 360 bucks in it. I’m by no means a restoration expert and don’t intend on it. I just enjoy working with antique tools and equipment. I repainted it with CASE tractor paint, just because that’s what was on my shelf at the time. Anyway I won’t take up anymore of your time. Looking forward to more videos. Thanks for taking the time to talk about our equipment.

@@Miner-49 you got a steal of a deal. I paid more than that just for the flywheel pulley peddles and seat bracket. Had to buy the seat and chain extra. This didn't include the lathe! So have fun with it. There's a lot of them out there but you should keep the RPMs below 500 and it should last another hundred years.

I have a F & W Barnes #5. I purchased remade crank and petals, the lathe runs great. I need the seat and other parts to make the unit complete. Several components were cracked and repaired/brazed a long time ago. The large back gear has two damaged teeth.

That sounds like you have a good start. The Amish in Pennsylvania have a foundry and I got the seat from them. Comes with the 5 point hole - like original. Good luck

Dave Wilson Yes, I have the foundries name/number. The lathe was purchased by my granddad, early 1950s. All petal drive components were missing. The lathe sat for years, about two years ago found crank and petals. Definitely needs a seat attached to the main frame. Will keep in touch!

@@Larry19271 IIRC the seat only cost $45 and shipping is low also. They are the best to deal with. I have to machine the seat support and turn a shaft for the drive cone pulley. A project for later!

I picked up a BF Barnes threading lathe. No flywheel pedals or original cast legs. Nice machine needs cleaned. None is rough moving.

Hey Dave, do you have the complete gear set for your W F & J #13? I got the 8 foot bed version of the same lathe, but I am missing some of the gears for thread cutting, I have most of the smaller ones but lack the large, and also need some info on how the gears are mounted as I may be missing something for that.
I'd be in your debt if you gave me some of the details of the missing gears, or maybe working something out to have copies of yours cast eventually if you know anyone capable of that.
Anyway, hope to hear back from you and I hope you have fun with your lathes!

Sounds like you have a good start Duke. I believe the change gears are 10 pitch. Before I got the #13 I got an incomplete set of #10 from somewhere. The lathe came with a full set +. Contact me. davewwwilson@gmail. I'm sure we can work something out. It is a very fine lathe.
I'll make a video of that side of the machine.
      Dave

W.F & J. Barnes turn up in the UK...from time to time...
    Lathes & drills...
Seems like police sirens are a feature of daily life there as well...?
It's all you hear round here all day...🇬🇧👍

The fire Department is across the street.
I read in practical machinist blog that more barnes were shipped to Russia prior to the 1917 revolution than any other place in the world. So apparently there could be more of them in Russia right now.

They did a good drill did Barnes...
The ones that appear in the UK were probably sent here during WW1...🇬🇧👍

That's the vertical handle on an external acme thread...?
I've seen similar arrangements on a Denbigh (Tipton, West Midlands, UK) drill press using an external acme thread and they're prone to wear...
Got to keep them well oiled and clear of drillings...
I've a big old Jones & Shipman (Leicester, England) pillar drill...7ft high with a 4MT...
It'll be a good ton in weight will that...

I sent you an email a few months ago and I never got a reply...👍🇬🇧
