I saw Bob at an airport in line at Starbucks. I introduced myself and told him I had a home studio. He talked to me like a peer instead of a goofy fan (which I am). He gave me a few tips and couldn't have been nicer.
Wow! Thanks Pete! Absolutely AMAZING! Thanks ever so much for sharing this!! This is pure GOLD!!
Thanks Warren!
Hi@@PeteThorn amazing! What a great video!!
Folks thanks for watching- Part 2 coming soon, where Bob mixes a song of mine and shows us more about mixing, how he uses efx, etc.....
Thanks Pete for sharing this with us.
Can't wait for that!! Thanks Pete!
This is awesome! Thanks Pete! If you wouldn't have mentioned a less then perfect camera, I wouldn't have noticed...Great content!
This is even better than the one he did for Mix with the master. Good questions by a real musician.
Your mixes sound great using today's technology, and to me if it sounds good it is good. Thanks
We come to your channel because you're a pro about the things that count: playing guitar and being a lovely bloke. It really doesn't matter if the camera's a bit grainy.
Thanks Gerry! That makes me happy
Agreed. If he didn't tell me the camera is grainy, I wouldnt know.
Agreed...didn’t see a video quality issue here. Just a great interview with a name on so many records in my collection!!
All these years later.. still watching, still some of the best content out!
"I got my first real snare drum" to the Summer of '69 melodic was hilarious!!!
Bob Clearmountain! This is a wonderful surprise. An absolute legend. Back in the late 80's my friend and I would buy music just because he had worked on it.
Pete Thorn, this is arguably my favorite interview ever with Bob Clearmountain. Thanks for letting him getting into the details. Well done!
Wow, that was awesome! BC is an absolute legend. The guitar and drums sounds he got with Bryan Adams were amazing. Pete, you're an excellent interviewer, seriously you really shine. Never interrupt and really get the best out of people. Thanks for doing this, I really enjoyed it!
Thank you!
Great interview. I love Bob's stories.
Hope you do more interviews, nice interviewing style - you let your "guest" talk, one of your most enjoyable videos. Do more interviews like this :o)
You mean Pete lets his guests talk, unlike Eddie Trunk? lol
Let's Dance - that delay apparatus with its pingpong was a millisecond on the slow side, and the vocals returned and appeared _so_ upfront just with being in time or even a bit relaxed and laid back. One of the greatest groove tricks, and Mr.Bowie immediately caught what was happening and said this is it, no more change...
Bass drum fader next to the bass guitar! Why I have I not thought of that before. This video is amazing, what a gentle, thoughtful guy.
Man! Great question about "Let's Dance"! I ALWAYS wondered that!
Thanks, me too!
This was sensational! Of all the interviews with Bob, this gave me the most information and practical tips to improve my mixing. The thing that always comes across with Bob is how humble and down-to-earth he is. Just wonderful.
Really glad you enjoyed it - more to come in part two!
I totally agree with Bob's discussion about the beauty of human imperfections and not falling into the digital traps of Autotune and quantizing and mechanical auto-recording. His comments about the Stones are exactly in line with Mick Jagger's quote on Bob's website: "It's a band, not a fucking metronome!" That's a definite rule to live by.
What a great and humble guy.
I’ve always thought His guitar tones on the bryan adams records with Keith Scott are amazing. Quintessential strat tones
Keith Scott is probably my favorite “unknown” guitar player. Absolutely love his older Strat tones.
Agreed. Into the Fire and Native Son are some of my favourite Bryan Adams songs and Keith Scott's tone is magical on those songs amongst many many other songs.
Me too. Great strat sound all through out the album. And drums were huge too. Reckless is having that human vibes which went missing in records Bryan did with Mutt.
So true
Pure Gold. A million thanks to Pete and Bob. Thanks for the closeups of the desk and great stuff about over-quantizing + tuning.
I LOVE that you let HIM do the talking. Something a lot of other interviewers dont manage to do (hello warren huart...), maybe bc he is such a quiet and humble person. Nice interview!
😂😂😂😂
Really enjoyed this interview. Bob remains one of my favourites. And funny to touch upon the CLA encounter. CLA's mixes are in your face, just like CLA himself is.
I noted the Yamaha SPX990 in his rack and saw the preset number and thought, oh interesting, some magic secret reverb he likes in there. So i check with my SPX990 what it is, symphonic chorus -_-
The other thing quickly mentioned in this interview but is so crucial to some of his best known mixes are the arrangements of the songs. Those huge snares work because there is nothing much else (especially in the intro's of these songs). That leaves a lot of space for a big dense reverb tail. Same with Let's Dance, that delay stuff only works in a sparser arrangement. Now i do more mixing, i tend to cut and mute more tracks in order to get more space in the arrangement. It really helps things sound better.
Well, symphonic chorus is by far the best effect in any of the SPX range, so there is that...
100% agreed on space in arrangement, when every 1/8th note is methodically filled, dynamics have nowhere to go.
@@nicdee316 Sure do like the Symphonic chorus. But I also still like some of the ER algo's among others. Rev7 and SPX990 are still much in use here. SPX900 I still use in live sound and also in my guitar rig (along with the FX500). Very cool for shoegazing stuff and the SPX90 was in guitar rigs a lot in the 80ies/90ies.
Wow! Thank you Pete! What a great deep interview! I’m a big fan of Bob’s work, he is a master of balancing and creative effects, in my opinion. Looking forward for Part 2!
Great interview with the Legend. Great insider of history of the songs and artists he has work with.
A lot of great question in the interview
Awesome Job Pete. Looking forward to part 2
Very enjoyable! Looking forward to Part II.
Totally amazing, if you would make a 100 of these I gladly would watch them all. That guy must have a million stories and incredible insight for us to learn from.
I understand why everyone asks Bob about the Stones, Bowie etc. but my favorite group he worked with is Crowded House. An amazing band and his mixing of their albums is just impeccable
Side chaining a track to the vocal track with the EQ & limiter set for de-essing is a good idea. Thanks Bob & Pete!
This video was absolutely amazing. So many great stories and I learned a ton.
Good God... Went to listen to Del Amitri "Roll To Me" and got listening to "Tell Her This". That bass part is INCREDIBLE!!! It's like, "Can I play every note in the chord without hitting the root?"
Pete, I'm ready for this!!! I need to learn more about mixing.
Great interview Pete thank you! Very inspiring.
Wow! A great interview. Thanks very much for this Pete. Found while looking for info on Roxy’s Avalon record as I was really interested in those tones (particularly the bass sounds).
Bob’s console has its own zip code!
These videos are great Pete! I really believe the engineers are the unsung heroes of many of our favorite music and it's great to get to meet them and hear the stories about how some of the legendary music they helped make came about! The delay in Let's Dance absolutely made that song! Of course it was a happy accident but that's how the best music comes out!
*Happy Independence Day* Pete!
Thanks for being an inspiration.
Good on ya mate! 😎
awesome video... always great to hear Bobs stories and advice. you should do more of these interview style videos Pete, the one with Vai talking about his plexi was good also.. look forward to seeing part 2 with Bob..
I will try and do more!
This is great! To hear how some of our favorite records were made is wonderful archive material. Thank you!
Thanks Pete and Bob, great insights, I really appreciate them.
Wow Pete, I was at that Bowie show as well, it was at B.C. Place, the stadium was just built and it was the first concert there. Regarding Bryan Adams, I almost bought one of Keith Scott’s old white plexis and got to pick his brain on some of his gear from those classic sessions, it was amazing the stuff shared with me, he’d be an epic guest, one of my favourite players and a great guy. Love the channel, awesome content as usual.
I was at that Bowie show too. And Keith’s an old friend, he had a cassette mix of ‘Reckless’ & we sat in his pickup & listened to the whole album. He was so exited about it.
Fantastic Pete! My two favorite subject - guitar and mixing. Can’t wait for part two.
Good Stuff for a Saturday! Thanks Pete!
"... asking the sound guy ..." Well, this sound guy isn't just any guy, haha ... What a true legend!!
Awesome interview! On the "Lets Dance" track it sounds like he did the same to the snare in various locations. I would have never guessed Bowie doing just one take, but his vocals and Stevies guitar...FIRE!
Pete, I don't know why I only found your channel. Excellent video it's shocking this video has only 25k views. I'd expect a good million of so views. Really enjoyed! Thank you!
What a humble nice guy man. I got so much respect for these amazing producers that sat at the helm when all those great old records were made.
awesome! when is part 2 coming???
You're so cool Pete, and what a great interviewer. Bob Clearmountain is a legend. Thank you!
Thank you!
This was truly awesome and I didn't notice any video issue, I was so enthralled just listening. Thank you guys!!
Thanks Pete and Bob; great stories and mix info; much appreciated : D
Awesome - I’d love to see more of this content with interviews/tutorials
Got to do some collaborative work with Chris Kimsey around 2007 and met him in London through Bill Aucoin, original manager of Kiss, for his production company. Chris is a legendary producer in his own right and, at the time of the Stones’ “Tattoo You,” here single handedly culled together the record by piecing together the best outtakes of unreleased material from 1972-1979 and was able to navigate the choppy waters between Mick and Keith to craft what I had always thought was the Stones’ best album. We sat at a table for a few hours one night and he was just the nicest guy indulging me with stories, in particular about Tattoo You. Over a bottle of Limincello, nonetheless.
I asked for some advice and he told me a story about how he had done a mix of “Miss You” a couple of years earlier and had been driving down the pacific Coast Highway with the top down and it came on the radio and he thought to himself “what an amazing mix! I’m better than I even thought!” Some time later when he looked at the album credits for “Some Girls,” he had forgotten that they actually used Bob’s mix of the song and realized the folly of his error. The lesson? “Don’t be so precious about your own work!,” he said.
Another truly class act in the dubious world of rock and roll. Chris ended up buying Olympic in London where I believe he still resides. If you can get an interview with Chris, he’s an untapped wealth of great information and one of the most kind hearted people I’ve ever met in the business.
I also remember around that same time, Bill was handling a singer-songwriter, Cindy Bullens and, one day, while at Bill’s office, he pops in a cassette of her latest track, mixed by none other than Bob. In his Bostonian drawl, he shouted at me over the din of the playback, “Bawb is the best engineer I’ve ever heard mix!” I still remember the big lettering on the cassette label from Bob’s studio that read “Mix This!” I remember reading it as a challenge I wouldn’t be able to win!
Thanks for the great interview with Bob! A gentle and kind genius if there ever was one :)
That was great Pete! Thank you and thank you Bob for sharing some amazing memories and techniques. Can't wait for the next one!
This is the sickest thing. Bob seems like such a cool dude. Subscribed just for this!
Fantastic interview, I learned a lot!
Great stuff! Thanks guys! 👌🏻🕶✌🏻
hysterical. I was at that Bowie concert in Vancouver too, it was my very first concert. AMAZING show.
I just went and listened to let's dance and I always thought that guitar part was a synth! Great interview.
Shoot me too
Pete - this is such amazing stuff - So natural and insightful. I spent so long when I started out making the majority of my recordings and mixes all about 'DRUMS' because of the inspirational genius that is Bob Clearmountain. Thanks so much for posting this sir - its just brilliant. Love your content Pete - looking forward to Part 2.
Thank you so much!
Kinda my favorite Bob interview so far.
that was cool Pete! looking forward to part two. Do you think you'd ever do one of these with Linda Perry? Didn't you work with her some? She's fascinated me for a long time.
Bob is amazing! Such a cool cat! Thanks for making it happen Pete! 😎
Thank you for this.
Thank you for this great interview. Bob is an absolute legend. Respect.
Great interview, We appreciate you Mr Clearmountain
This awesome!! Thanks for the awesome video!! When is part 2 coming out?
thanks for this pete. I'm guessing part 2 is never coming at this point. but at least we have this.
Fantastic interview, Pete! Thanks for your contribution.
This is amazing! Thank You!
This will be awesome. Cheers from Sweden! 🇸🇪
wow look at gorgeous studio full of legendary analog gear
Thanks!
Hey Pete, found your Channel via Produce Like A Pro and enjoyed the interview, your channel is amazing and the interview with Bob Clearmountain is so inspiring, wish you all the best ! 🤘Thx for this great content !
considering the epicness of the records this man has worked on he's unbelievably humble wow
SO cool Pete. Just itching for the next part.
Pete! This was epic! So excited for part 2.
Great interview! Bob is a kind-brilliant and humble guy.
Sir you have an awesome voice
Pete, fantastic interview. Can't believe I've only just found it. BC's story of initially using track 1 of tape for the bass drum was what I was taught also, the reason, I was told, was "because the BDrum is intermittent it doesn't matter if you lose a beat or two due to some damage on the tape." Listening to BC I realised I committed crimes against music for many years, lol. Lots of great tips, fantastic interview, SUBSCRIBED.
Bob is very high up on my list. He was on Toto's last album with Jeff Porcaro on drums mixing and also on the last one they released lately mixing. The sound he gets is out of this world.
We need to see part 2 !
Thanks Pete.. Very informative... Love it..
My guy Bob even mixed some of Huey Lewis & The News' albums, including "Sports" which might be one of the most unappreciated albums ever even though it's 7 times platinum in the US, reached #1 in one of the most stacked years in music ever (1984) and outsold every single album that year (including "Born In The USA", "Like A Virgin", "Purple Rain", "Private Dancer" etc) excluding "Thriller"!
Yet it hardly ever gets mentioned in any "Top 100 80s albums" or "Top 100 80s pop albums" etc lists!
You’re absolutely right
@@PeteThorn thanks Pete! I really admire your work!!
what a great way to lay out a mix, so smart and ergonomic! Thanks Pete! Looking forward to part 2
32:24 the Serious Moonlight tour was great. At Wembley Arena the "too posh to watch the support act" folks showed up typically late only to find out that Bowie _was_ the support act and they'd missed the entire first set! At the end of the tour he played at Milton Keynes bowl which was another amazing show and even though Bowie's voice desperately needed a vacation by then, he still gave it his all.
What a humble nice guy.
Dude!! Part 2??
Any update on part 2? Thanks Pete!
Great vid!!! did a part two ever get uploaded? would love to see it
This was so cool! Thanks for sharing, but man, we need part 2!!
At hat was wonderful! Look forward to part 2!
Another super insightful interview! Also, super relaxed. You both seem absolutely at ease.
Great questions Pete. Really well done, thank you.
What a great video.... back in the day you could get in trouble for making a note about a setting.... Here Mr. Clearmountain freely shares. Thank you to you both for sharing!
Thanks!
Crazy cool Pete.
Thanks for letting us in to a world we never see.
Pete, thanks for sharing a very interesting interview with the "fifth musician" meaning the engineer. Bob really did make music happen back when music was live. I know you must have had more to learn just hanging out in his studio. Cheers!
This one is gold
awesome and Bob's a a pet lover too
that vocal tuning tip is awesome. Great video thanks for doing this!
Awesome ! He's a real master. Would be so awesome to have the same with Doug Mckean, which is at the heart of so many great record
Fascinating! Thank you both for this!
