Are you not concerned about cutting back to a bud or a lateral branch? Is it because they're so small diameter it doesn't matter?

You should always be pruning to a node, bud, or side branch, as internodal cuts will just die down to the next live bud. The direction your topmost bud is facing will also determine the direction of the branch growth. Hope that helps!
