So fitting he played for the Steelers.....Hard worker,blue collar with alot of grit....one of the many reasons I fell in love with the Steeler organization as a young kid in late 70,s living in East Tn. and not being able to watch them but I read alot about them and Love them to this day.....you Pittsburgh locals are blessed to be right there around it,The best and classic organization in the N.F.L. for those that know and God bless Rock.

As a vet, I think this guy is incredible. I'm not a Steelers fan, but they had a very classy organization I think.
Went home, figured out how to eat and exercise and train. Did not get a sports nutritionist, no doctor subsidy, no special treatments. I am in New Jersey now and am going to look around and see if he has any public speaking or meetings

I had no idea Rocky was so intelligent and an eloquent speaker. I’m a Cowboys fan and he killed us.
My family and I met Rocky at a boy scout fundraiser dinner in Port St. Lucie Fl. Not only was he a nice guy, he let my wife wear all 4 of his rings....... He then walked away. My lovely wife was bursting with excitement. She asked me, "What should I do?" I said "Run." We had a good laugh. I have pictures of Rocky with my family, and she is wearing his rings. Total class. Thank you Rocky, for your service...

Appleton, I looked up to Rocky Bleier. Much respect to this man. A warrior with a lot of heart.
He has an amazing story. Tough. Resilient. Was willing to do the tough work and do special teams and his blocking skills were second to none as a running back.
Rocky Bleier is a man i respect a man whose football career could've ended because of Vietnam
His book Fighting Back was just fantastic to read, VERY inspiring ! I read it the first week i was sent to prison for something i didn't do, his book got me through that senseless hardship. This man, Mr. Rocky Bleier IS the epitome of a true gridiron American man. T.Y. Rocky !!
1978-79 a 10-11 yr old Small Town Iowa farmboy put on a t-shirt, gym shorts and a crappy old pair of canvas cons. He would sneak out the back door of the farmhouse and run through January and February blizzards pretending he was Rocky doing road work to make the team.
Mom got the family van stuck looking for me several times.

I can’t understand why this story isn’t more widely known. Rocky was my favorite player as a kid. Although I respected Roger Staubach who served his time (as an officer), Rocky served as an enlisted man and an NCO. Don’t put yourself down, when I see Robert Urich, I think Rocky Bleier. “Spencer for Hire” was an actor, you’re the real deal

Roger Staubach went to and graduated from the Naval Academy, so he graduated as as Ensign in the Navy
What a life, overcoming adversity and becoming a winner. Rocky is a great guy and to be admired.
True to life hero in so many ways
When you think of the characters on those legendary Steelers Teams 'Rocky Bleier' certainly comes to mind. In football, he did it all. National Champion, Captain of National Champion and four time Super Bowl winner. Everything seemed to come perfectly and how great was that for one hell of a human being.
That part about getting on your knees to pray, it works.

A real man of steel
He was a regular at a restaurant that I worked at in the early 80s and met and spoke with him many times. His book Fighting Back is excellent.
I was a Cowboys fan in the 70s but love his inspirational story.
grew up with Rocky.. the greatest all round running back in history... bar none.
This man is a true patriot and a hard nosed half back. But most of all a true gentleman.
I became a Steeler’s fan after reading a Sports Illustrated article, I think in the year after their first SB win, about Rocky Bleier’s amazing journey to that point. This man is a hero to me. (Oh, and the rest of the team wasn’t bad either!)
This man has a GREAT understanding on LIFE. We used to watch the Steelers play on Sundays back in the 70’s.
There's a great autobiography regarding his life, i believe written in the late 70's or early 80's. Great reading material !! Sorry, i forgot the name of the book but you can find it easy with a quick search. Could probably find it for a cpl. dollars used on Amazon.
This shows how important the brain and character of a person are. Of course there are some limits where physical size or strength are important, given the rules of a particular game or sport. But in between there is a vast expanse where a man's endurance, work ethic, ability to learn, ability to adapt, ability to not give up, ability to lead, ability to positively influence others is more important and can fill the gaps. Today's "athletes" while maybe bigger and stronger are idiots. They don't know how to handle defeats or setbacks. The NFL and colleges draft them and they fail. No brains, no work experience, most do not get real degrees, most do not have the patience to learn things. Most go broke very quickly after their short NFL career ends.
As a lifelong hater of everything Pittsburgh Steelers, I sure do love the men that played for them back in the seventies. I have a feeling Rocky Bleier would have been good at anything he wanted to do

Whatever physical limitations Rocky had, they were more than made up for with heart. There were more than a few players like Rocky throughout the NFL in those days. They were on the ragged edge of having adequate size and speed, but they had heaps of football smarts and heart. A player from a different mold, in a different era, and a vastly different world. I'm glad I was around to see him and the Steelers team achieve greatness.
There still are a lot of players making it who many have counted out. Though none have the wounded vet angle. As a NE fan we have Brady who was made fun of for being slow and skinny. Edelman who is small.and was a QB in college, undrafted Adnrews, they list is long in the NFL.

I HATED the Pittsburgh Steelers with a passion. And yet I loved Rocky Bleier. A total man. His story was about life, yeah some football, but about life and perseverance. I served 7 years later as a marine, and I respected Bleier even more.
Effective at blocking and running in a run oriented league. True grit, legit tough guy. Thanks Rocky.

Sometimes its about doing the RIGHT THING and putting him in the Hall of fame ,, would be.
He's not a HOF caliber player but is one heckuva guy who turned adversity into a great career. He worked out at my high school track in LaGrange, Il. in the mid-70s, I recall.
If Rocky is not in the HoF (and I think he should be) then at least his story should be in the HoF!!

Man, Bleier was always bald. Crazy receded hairline even in early high-school years. I respect the 'Nam Service, however, without the Rooney Family and all of these other folks in his corner he'd have been nothing on the field. That may be tough for some sentimental types to hear but it's true.

There ain't no way a 5'9" white RB, even if was much better than Rocky in High School, would ever be offered by a D1 college today. The D1 coaches would not even consider looking at his film. ESPN would immediately be floating the "R" word around. A coach can offer a black 5'9" RB and if he doesn't work out it's okay. But if a white D1 coach offers a white 5'9" RB and he doesn't work out it would be very detrimental to his career. The main stroke of luck you had Rocky was being in high school before things got the way they have been the past 25-30 years.

It just brings home how impressive the Rock really is. He was too short and too damaged to play in the NFL. Thanks to Art Rooney, we all know now that Rocky Bleier is no ordinary man.
