Delicious! I am so used to Hotter in Wagner that it seems odd to hear him in Rossini, but he is wonderful. And his portrayal of the priest's smarmy hypocrisy is subtle and hilarious. Imagine living in Munich in those days and just strolling into the opera house for a Barbiere that included Wunderlich, Prey and Hotter. Like a dream come true. ❤
@@LohengrinO Just about everything Wunderlich sang was the best rendition. I never liked the role of Tamino until I heard Wunderlich's version. His early death was one of the greatest tragedies in opera. Had he lived, he would have been the Lohengrin of all time, and also Walther von Stolzing.

@@LohengrinO Oh, for sure! That'd be the dream; to sing low F's, E's, and D's. To sing as low as possible without sounding constrained, and without unwanted wobbles. But most important would be to produce such a dark, rich, cavernous sound, that everything else gets swallowed by the depth and resonance of it.
@@LohengrinOSo have I, but sadly you cannot manufacture a real bass voice. In my case everything sounds fake below F#2, and not even a bit dark, nor rich. But it's good enough for the shower, I guess :D ... I think my neighbours approve because they have never complained 😅

Is that from an actual performance? The shots of the audience at the end make me think it may be a scene from a movie. But whatever it is, it's delightful. And I love the way he stays in character even when acknowledging the applause.
I will always prefer Italian, but it's so nice to see this, just as Callas singing Wagner and Cherubini in Italian... some purism is good, but this is also a good way to make people more close to opera, in their own language... my only concern is with the poor librettists that are so understated and get no credit at all with the translations xD

Jason Hurd yes I am merely a human bass... Sam Ramey can do it in D... I cannot lol. No my range sits lower. The ascent is terrifying enough with the Es. I have a sustained F and can briefly hit F# and once live I touched a G. I’m working on increasing my upper range. My F isn’t as reliable as I’d like it to be. As for the low end, I have a reliable low D and on good days, Db. My low register is my best. I’m lucky to have it

The only bass singer I have heard sing La calunnia in the original key is Ruggero Raimondi, on the old Levine recording. Of course, there is some debate as to whether Raimondi is a true basso profundo. I saw Tozzi as Don Basilio in 1976 and he sang it in C, which I thought was odd, since he regularly sang Hans Sachs, which has a rather high tessitura.

Wunderlich I would truly love to hear in a Handel opera like Alcina... his Ruggiero is the best in discography for me
