    The sharper the knife is Jim, the less the onion makes you cry! I was tought this in my catering sessions and it really does work!

    • @Anonem98
      @Anonem98 10 років тому

      ***** Yeah so do mine, especially with hayfever, the stinging smell is something to do with if you like batter the onion with a knife, the more it ''cries'' I didn't really believe it at first but it seems to have been working for me at college, hence why a sharper knife will stop you crying :')

      Also if you cut around the root and not through it you should be fine because that's what makes your eyes water!😃

    • @VirtueUK
      @VirtueUK 10 років тому +9

      No! You're supposed to wear earmuffs because the onions make you cry by shouting insults at you at a frequency higher than the human range of hearing, so only your subconscious hears them subsequently making you cry! The earmuffs make it so that your subconscious doesn't hear the insults and thus you won't cry ever again! I learned this from science and you can't argue with science because science is scientific.

    YTF DID MY EYES STING WHEN HE CHOPPED THE ONION?!

  • @ynni
    @ynni 10 років тому +2

    When you chop an onion's root off enzymes are released. These mix with the water in the onion to create sulphuric acid. This is what causes your eyes to sting and water. I find leaving the root on while you chop it helps. Just chop vertically to just above the root, then chop horizontally up to the root while gripping the onion carefully. An onion has never made me cry since!

    JIM! First off, I need to say it, PLEASE don't scrap your blade on the cutting board like that, it dulls it. Turn the knife around so the blade is facing up, it's also flatter on that side, so it'll work better. But a dull blade is more dangerous than a sharp one.
    Also, to help prevent tears, try putting the onion in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes. It'll make you cry less. But chewing gum helps, or doing it near running water. (cold water)

    Jim, if you make sure your knife is super sharp before you cut your onion then you won't have the problem with crying because if its dull then the juices will splash up and get in your eye, that's what causes the crying. Ceramic knives also work really well for that, I've found that I don't cry when using my ceramic knife.

      Ellen Wilding no, the lamb is the baby of the sheep, and if you eat lamb you eat a baby. It's the same if you eat suckling pig or piglet, you are eating the baby of the pig! Seriously, go to a butcher and ask him, or better, ask him to SHOW you. You'll never eat meat again.

    • @bastet81
      @bastet81 10 років тому +2

      Ellen Wilding you can eat what you want, but at least know where you food come from. Ham doesn't grow on trees, they had to kill a living animal for that. Watch "Earthlings" or "Slaughterhouse: The Task Of Blood" and then let me know what you think.

    As a lover of potato/potato dishes, here's a cool tip.
    With your wedged potatoes, evenly coat in garlic powder and oregano.
    I swear, it is HEAVEN!

    By the way Jim, the best way to not cry while chopping onions, is to place the onion inside your fridge before chopping them, as the cells inside the onion freeze up, it reduces the chances of spewing the same vapor that makes you cry, and also, don't breath while chopping onions, 'cause the thing that makes you cry is all about the vapor, so when it enters your nose, it affects the eyes. ;)

    Jim - I breathe through my mouth alone when I chop onions, and since I've started doing that, I've not cried whilst chopping onions. Give it a shot!!

    Hi Jim. Thanks for another great video. I have a little tip for you, if you turn your knife around and use it not sharp side to push things off your cutting board, will your knives stay sharp much longer.
