- If you have a commercial beer you love and it's not pasteurized you can STEAL THEIR YEAST! Martin from The Homebrew Challenge channel challenged me to brew a beer without buying any yeast so of course I had to try this method! links in 'show more' for the brew I challenged Martin to and all the equipment!

I absolutely love when instead of scrapping their videos when something doesn't go according to plan, home brewers pivot and persevere, troubleshoot and overcome. Nice work! You epitomize what home brewing is all about.
Keep it up! Love how you just adapted! Also I love the colab can’t wait to see the final product.
Fantastic collab - been waiting for your side of the video after watching Martin's!
Love seeing the full story there - surprised at how much yeast you ended up harvesting. So excited for the triple tripel taste test!
Every time I watch Sarah brew I think of my own set up and methods of brewing beer and I feel like a caveman🙂. Great videos and great information. Can't wait for the tasting video.
Super video love the collab
Yesterday I use your tip for using aquarium pump as oxigen helper and it work so well :)
La fin is one of my favorite beers! Ommegang three philosophers is right there with it.
So I guess the next step in yeast gathering is comeing. Drive around the neighbourhood/ park with an open jar of malt extract to what you can collect in the way of flavourfull wild yeast. The taste expierence goes on, Love your videos.
Sorry to tell you this but Unibroue condition their bottles with US-05. Their yeast is not present in the final product :(
Yep, they bottle condition with different yeast. Wyeast sells their primary as part of their private collection.
Good info Sarah. I've done this alot. Most recently with a farmhouse yeast from a 750ml bottle of Equilibrium Austin.
Purchase a vented/ventable carboy bung for your starter flask. You'll thank me later.
When you pitch your yeast starter do you allow for the half gallon of starter volume in your boiled wort volume?
I read that I believe Coopers uses the same yeast for all the beers so maybe you can harvest the yeast from some bottles of Coopers Pale Ale for your Sparkling Ale. That seems to be easier to find in the US, at least here in the Tampa Bay at Total Wine. I also had their Stout as well at a bar/restaurant here. I was curious about Sparkling Ale too the last year or so, but just tried a Coopers extract kit. It wasn't too bad, I'd love to try brewing an all-grain version. Perhaps I'll try your recipe. Cheers!
Yes, they use the same yeast in all of their beers. They recommend if you're harvesting it to use the lower ABV beers. The last time I did it I used a six pack of the Mild Ale, which is 3.5% and if you haven't tried it, tastes somewhere between the Pale and the Sparkling.
Did you notice any reduced fermentation activity in the starter after using the anti foam? I love adding it to prevent boil over but I always panic when I don’t see the usual signs only to remember the reason why
Two of my favourite brewers at once what not to like
Ooooh. Interesting! :)
Hey Flora, happy to help in any way possible, I'm I'm Aus, happy to send some yeast over ✌
Without dry malt extract, could I just use sugar?
Also any idea what the gravity is of the 10:1 water and dme mix?
Thanx n cheers!
Not sure about unibroue but many breweries use bottling yeast for bottle conditionning so you might end up harvesting neutral yeast.
I can get it down at my local bottle shop(liquor store) or pretty much any bottle shop here.Do you want a bottle or a can?
Unibroue actually uses a different yeast for bottle conditioning
yes they use neutral yeast for bottle conditioning.
Nice video. Maybe a HEPA filter could be used.
Have you check the grocery store for the extract coopers kit
I'm located in Australia and would be happy send you over a Coopers Sparkling Ale either can or stubby
You do know you'll get so meany bottles of Cooper's sent to you from your fans in Australia :) because you have said you can't get any :)
I have read that bottle carbonated beers using a different yeast strain than the yeast used for making the beer :-( to protect their "trade marked" yeast. I was looking to make Erdinger clone at the time.
This is just silly.
No he is right, they conditioned the bottles with US-05!
@@pilatuya766 that changes flavor of original beer then. So creator must account for it in recipe. Technically you could still count it as house blended yeast.
@@3_dogs_brewery188 maybe but I know they filter out any trace of the original strain before bottling. So if you are trying to harvest the Belgian Yeast you won't be able to get any of it :/
@@pilatuya766 I guess we wait and see if she gets a belgian then.
Ik this is about brewing but that's a nice les paul there
