Our "Boston Dynamics" Robot Parody video brought up many questions regarding whether it was "fake". In this episode, Sam, Niko, Wren, Clint, and Jake examine why this occurred, where content and deep fake technology is going next, the role of major social media sites, and the importance of critical thinking in the 2020's.

At 1:22 jake got me I was ready for him to tell me all about squarspace and their award winning templates.
Have you heard about their 24/7 customer service?
Did you know that you can transfer any existing url to squarespace?
B_runner_Jr2 HAHAHAHA i love this fanbase already 🤣
Jake! Tell us about how intuitive the platform is!
Great show guys. I wish Niko and Wren could've both been present simultaneously. The #CorridorForceFive !!!
I love how you guys show how the podcast is set up and don't try to hide that you have specific topics; its like seeing behind the scenes but in the main video
The real question is if Boston Dynamics has invited yall to come out and actually see the real robot and maybe do a video with them, that would be great!
I love it when Niko and wren talk in these.
It actually gives me such hope for humanity because of how beautifully intelligent and affable you all are - especially Wren and Niko - could listen to them talk (so passionately and super eloquently) about things they love forever and a day.
I've been watching you guys all my life since you lived with Freddie. You guys are the best idols for any young filmmakers now. Please keep expanding and keep doing everything you guys love. You guys are the best film school.
Hearing you guys talk about gun safety in school reminded me of how I got to take that class. It wasn't required, it was an extra class (like driver's ed) but real guns were used, but the barrels were sealed up and the pins removed, so nothing could go in or be shot out.
It let the students get to feel a real gun without putting the class at risk.
Also, if someone even got close to doing something they shouldn't, it was an automatic failure.
Such a fascinating episode (just finished listening to the audio on the podcast feed) - I was so curious about how you guys felt about the Bosstown Dynamics video’s vitality, and Niko’s machine learning was fascinating as always.
Been a fan of you guys for a long time but only just found out about the podcast through my recommended feed, and I’m so happy it’s a thing. You should definitely promote it more on the Corridor crew channel!
I grew up watching you guys, Itook a break from yourube for years and I'm now a VFX artist myself and recently started watching you again. My daily routine consists of me editing VFX with the playlists of your Corridor crew, podcasts and main channel vids going. You keep me motivated. :) so thank you for making awesome content.
ALSO, you have been killing it, keep it up. glad to see you guys haven't stopped doing your thing
I'm really with Niko on the point he made about it not being very difficult to discern whether things are fake in videos if one uses critical thinking. I might be biased because I am a film student and scrutinizing video and audio is a LOT of what I do, but even before becoming a film student I felt like I was able to easily figure out whether something seemed too fishy to be true. If something seems WILDLY questionable or too good to be true then it isn't difficult to pause, take a moment and analyze whether it is real or not. The fact that A LOT of people completely missed the "Bosstown Dynamics" and legitimately thought it was from Boston Dynamics are the perfect example of this.
About deep fakes and whether it is more difficult to puppet the face of a famous person than transplant a famous person's face onto an actor. In terms of the machine learning algorithms, I think it is actually easier to puppet a face. Also voice synthesis is totally a thing people can do.
Y’all were featured on so many platforms, I was on full on police mode every time I saw it trying to convince commentators that it was cgi XD
Sue twitter for enabling copyright infringement. They're liable!
My new favorite podcast. I really enjoy the ones without the guest and just talk about issues pertaining to vfx. I hope you guys keep doing it!
The big issue with the big push for increasing censorship (of things like gore etc.) is that legitimate political speech is getting censored at the same time. And the problem is that right now most of the politics getting censored may align with many people's worldview, but in the next cycle it may be your own political views or dissent being censored. And besides political content, censorship apparatus is used to suppress smaller channels in favor of corporate interests.
Being pretty disconnected from social media, learning the fact that people believed your video was real blows my mind. honestly I didn't see the "Bosstown Dynamics" the first time. However, I did see very small imperfections between the robot's feet and interactions with ground. Not to mention just the crazy premise of the video in the first place as well as other small logic flaws that don't really hold up in the real world. welp, now you know the power you wield.
On the topic of the Bosstown Dynamics watermark, I saw a few reuploads of the video on twitter where that watermark was edited to say "Boston Dynamics", which probably helped in spreading the misinformation.
Tom Cruise protip: for a Mission Impossible nutshot, they put a leather strap up one pant leg and down the other. Step on both ends for tension, and the leather stops the foot/kick just shy
Heuristics are really interesting. In regular english, it's little hacks and corner cuts your brain takes to come to a conclusion. For example, if you needed to unscramble a word, you would naturally know that the chances of three constants or two of the same letter in a row are unlikely, so your brain subconsciously looks past that. Niko actually brushed on this topic in this podcast when he said that the AI knows that certain chess moves are bad; just as a move that makes you lose your queen is likely to lower chances of winning, putting three of the same letter next to each other or two "Y"s next to each other would lower your chances of unscrambling. There are two main types of heuristics: availability and representative. Availability heuristics are conclusions made based on the most frequent and prevalent evidence present in your brain. For example, traveling by train is actually much more dangerous than by air, but one would say traveling by air is more dangerous because of the news reports and stories heard. Representative heuristics are like stereotypes of some sort. They are associations in your brain given a scenario. This is why most people picture NFL or NBA athletes as large African American men, because it's common and the stereotype. Psychology is really interesting, and I think it can help explain or elaborate many of your big topics that are discussed.
You should do 10 hour podcasts, 5 days a week so i have something to listen to at work 😁
"You need to pause and think about the rest of your life" --Niko, 2019
Love this quote!
53 minutes in Clint is struggling to not let his eyes close lol. I know that I FEEEELLLL
Can't wait for the collab video with the arms dealer in Clint's DMs.
You should promote this podcast more. I didn't know it existed until today.
Ian Silent same
You guys are great. Love the channels.
You all seem like the coolest guys to hang with! Keep it up!
That video looked absolutely amazing. I can never get a 3d object to match my lighting like you did. However, I could tell it was fake in a millisecond. Watch it on a TV and you can see that it's a render, same as the Tom Cruise video. But if you lower the quality to something under 720p, it get extremely realistic.
I saw the Boston Dynamics video as a video uploaded to a Discord servers meme channel(edit: it cut off after the T-pose). I later wanted to see/ read more on it, and found your original upload. Once it got to the Gun part, I realized id been fooled lol
Funnily enough, this was only 2 days after I found you guys from your VFX artists react video. Ive now binge watched every video on Corridor Crew >.>
I know it jeapordizes the overall immersion and artistic vision of a piece, but you guys should REALLY put baked in watermarks in all your stuff from now on. I think it's at the point now where you're too talented and too hardworking to not get the recognition you deserve
Fun story, had completely stopped watch Corridir Digital and then I saw the vid on twitter and was like "Hang on that's wren!"
Cool story bro
How could you discuss the Bosstown Dynamics video without bringing up the T-pose? That moment cracked me up so hard when I saw it, and I was hoping that someone would mention how hilarious the concept was for a robot to lock up and T-pose. Great podcast, as usual.
Niko: "You need to pause, and think about your life" lol love it, couldn't have said it any better.
Next time watermark with "Corridor Crew"
love the technical depth of this podcast! keep on educating the public
I'd be stoked to hear you guys chat with Devin Graham! You guys and Devin? Two of my favorite filmmakers!
You guys have got to check out The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe. One of the best books I've ever read and very relevant.
Quick topic I'm interested in hearing each of your views on: What's the purpose of public education? (I know it's broad but it is an important question)
That was such an enjoyable listen! Enjoyed every second of it!
Sounds like a job for...... Captain Disillusion!
I heard "Captain Delusion" lmao
There is an audio issue on apple podcast, sound keeps going up and down...
Oh geez, the talk about Siri made my iPad constantly open Siri (apparently she’s not trained to my voice yet).
Also its kinda interesting that all the german articles about the Bosstown dynamics video all say that its a video made by Corridor Crew. Apparently the first one who wrote the article wrote that and every other site just copied that from them
You guys need to do clips of this podcast! I’d love to listen to stuff but I don’t ha e the time for full podcast
Hearing the part about the people who review the flagged posts on social media (all the worst stuff that gets posted) makes me think of soldiers & what they see on the battlefield. For a job like that, it seems like the biggest things that come from that (for whoever's doing the job) are either PTSD or the stuff you see doesn't bother you anymore (that latter result seems, to me anyways, like the one that's more forgiving on the person doing the job).
Y'all should really check out the series that Destin from SmarterEveryDay did on algorithm manipulation. Really eye opening stuff and incredibly well done.
It's nice to see the VFX React videos get a ton of views and the new one become a viral video.
I've been wondering what laptop does jake use in these podcast video, is it surface pro or what?
One of your best! Thank you!!!!😍😍😍
the ones with just you guys are the best :)
Does anyone know where Clint got his shirt from?
This is great, but what happened to the banjo?
To Jake's question about whether it's possible to have machine learning on our phones: anything is possible with cloud computing. Someone (google for example) provides a bunch of GPU's as a service, and now you can send your face from your phone and some Google server merges it with Tom Cruise.
I remember I first heard about you guys on a tv show about video editing. It was like a competition type show. What was the name of it?
Wait what?!?
SirWrender yeah I swear to god there was a tv show where you guys made one where it was like a mail man in like slow mo or something. I remember looking up your channel and seeing the 3rd person mini boss video
If you guys ever put the robot-shooting range video out, please put a thick corridor logo on it, for your own sake
When people saw one of the first motion pictures, there was a shot of a train coming at the camera and seems to run it over. Everyone in the theater leapt out of their seats. Over 100 years later, modern people would laugh at that. This is the same with the Internet, Web, etc. It takes time for people to catch up to the new tech to be able to readily identify the BS from the real. We are still in the phase where folks are adapting to the new environment.
ohh man, intro small metal pig squeals are on point haha
13:30 I have a question for anyone that can answer it. Is the autoplay feature that much of a game changer in other platforms? AFAIK, on UA-cam users have to choose what video they watch and there is no "feed" with autoplay like other social networks and that would put Corridor in a disadvantage compared to sites that spoon feed users with ripped videos.
Also, doesn't autoplay kind of skew the view numbers from these other sites? Even if a video has 10x more views on Facebook, can you really guarantee that someone watched it just because it started playing by itself, sometimes for a few seconds and muted?
you guys should use the motion tracking suit if you can get it again and make a Mech video
I love Niko's shirt! Does someone else know where is it from?
The amount of articles I saw about the Bosstown Dybamics video with the phrase , "made using green screen technology" 😂 please journalists do your research...
This was a fantastic conversation guys.
0:25 Sam: "For real, should we re-intro this? So we don't murder people's eardrums?"
Sam underestimates how much people enjoy wacky random improv humor. Just look at something like Cold Ones with maxmoefoe and anything4views.
Whenever I've seen actual classes and stuff about critical thinking, it feels like it's just words describing what critical thinking is, but doesn't actually teach anything. Stuff like Captain Disillusion and Tom Scott display much better teaching of critical thinking than many purely educational things I have seen.
Fantastic episode guys!
Siri and Google assistant is trained by your voice in the beginning and you can even chose to train it more :) they can also learn multiple voices
Someone sent the bosstown dynamics video through WhatsApp to me and I was fooled. Even the shot when the robot grabbed the hockey stick I couldn’t believe what was going on.
So the gun WAS NOT enough for me. I didn’t immediately say “ huh a gun? It’s fake!”
I was more like “huh why is Boston Dynamics shooting blanks at its robots? What is the point of it? Why are they trying to disorientate it THIS WAY?”
As far as I can remember, the moment I realized its totally not a real demonstration was the kick in Wrens crotch.
And the only on my second watch I realized that it said Bosstown and not Boston.
I didn’t know your channel back then.
i think schools are starting to give electives for like practical knowledge. My school in Massachusetts has a Personal Finances class that I'm taking next year.
That's great!
In our parents' time it used to be called "civics". For whatever reason our elected representatives decided it was no longer necessary, just in time for the millenial generation to be impacted by the long-lasting effects of.
You guys should watch the documentary "Yes Men" you could use your powers for good!!
Btw "Huristic" is where 'heresy' the word came from, no self learning, endocrine.
You guys should collab with the misfits which Is another amazing podcast
Glad to see more podcast
I was thinking while I listened to the part about deepfakes that one of the best uses for it would be in movies. Especially action movies. In the action scenes you could have the stunt double do the action for the camera and deep fake the main actors face on the stunt double and have way more specific action scenes and close ups because you wouldn't have to worry about having the stunt doubles face in the shit instead on the actors.
Seriously, how many channels do you have?
The thing about "the russian video" is from the fact, that almost every Boston Dynamics video gets reuploaded with google translate text complaining about "skin bags", or something like that. And I do find them pretty fun, for example. Way funnier than people just beating the robot and, basically, obstracting him from his goal. o,o
Really digging the fits on this episode.
49:48 Jake trying to sneak in sponsor plug :)
57:20 Sam is so nervous...lol
Lmao I was so happy when you guys went back to “DEMONIZED”
what happens to sam @ 27:18 is it his belly?
Wow, I don't really watch news or Twitter that much, so I watched the video as a long time subscriber and I thought it was really cool and funny. But I didn't realize it actually tricked people. That's fun, but also sad.
Niko is so great to learn from :)
Lmao I couldn’t stop laughing at the coffee break plugin 😂 ok 2019.
Yeah, it’s unbelievable how quickly individuals are willing to interpret the assumptions of others and themselves as factual instead of doing further research to find the truth, it’s sad. I saw the Boston Dynamics parody video popping up on ifunny (a meme app); I did try to copy the link so I could report it to Christian, but I didn’t think it was that important and I thought the link wouldn’t work since my device couldn’t copy it...therefore, I believed the link only functions within the app and not other digital mediums outside of its domain.
Best video YET!
at 58:30 my iphone was going crazy lmao guess my phone doesnt learn as quickly xD
The trouble with security detecting deepfakes things, you could always "bake" the output by filming a screen, removing any evidence of deepfakery.
Things are almost getting to the point where someone could fake landing on the moon or launching a car into the earth's orbit.
Pro tip for the nut shot: If you're getting kicking in the nuts from THE FRONT [this does not work from behind]
You squeeze your glutes an thrust your hips, you'll be kicked in the ass not the nuts. Saves time in post!
Don't ask me how I know that.
You guys should create a music video for a musician. They’re short and relatively easy not easy but you know what I mean. Try to reach out to blackbear and mgk
Trying to read in the mind of sam at 10:21
*Picks up phone "man i Wish an arms dealer contacted me to sell them robots... Let me che-nah what the hell am i doing? There's no way..."
i dont foresee this channel existing in 2029
I did that facebook shit when I first got to SF. Shit still haunts me
@42:00 oh how you were wrong niko lol
Does anyone remember where niko talks about watching thr world burn?
What you guys should do is make something that's super realistic to trick people something is real and not say anything about it being a fake.
Wren is only one who wants to be serious about things
request -plz invite Maciej Kuciara
Great episode. It blows my mind someone can think your video was real. I watched it on your channel and I am following you for years but still...it's not like you have tried to hide the fact it's made up.
Who else thought there could be an episode on Tom Cruise when they did that deep fake XD
I was the first one i guess who DM wren about that Russian twitter page who stole the video.
You guys were right
Still waiting for D
