Too many voters will put themselves first and we'd end up with just what we have now. Some voters put themselves first by voting for what they can get from government and others put themselves first by self-congratulation on their generosity by voting for freebies for others, as long as there's no real sacrifice by themselves. Probably for most of us, it's a bit of both. Note how the most "liberal" members of Congress give the least of their own money to charity; they're generous with the product other people's labor. I don't see how that can change.

I am already highly aware of the money I make being taxed when I earn it, not when the government earns it. Then when I spend it, they tax the already taxed money. If I accrue interest in savings on already taxed money, they tax it. If I own a home/land bought with already taxed money, they continuously tax it. But as just an individual, I can't do anything but pay it or go to prison. If only the elected officials would actually advocate for those they are supposed to represent. The founding fathers heads would explode if they could see the size of the government and how much the citizens were taxed to keep the bloat afloat.
I've been paying attention to the line items in California, if everyone could see how much we pay in State, County and City tax they'd ask why do we have a deficit ?
Ah! good question, and its because there is a big, black, deep, hole in Washington. A lot of money goes in that massive hole and unaccounted for, the hole never seems to get filled, as a matter of fact, its getting bigger and deeper, and no one knows where the money is going.
