@gibbo3408 A really good place to hear them was from the Uni Chapel steps on a summers evening. The sound control has been altered since them so might not be as good. Inside they are not easy at all. The treble shout (not always a bad thing) and the middle bells are unclear. Clapper modifications have helped reduce the tenor drowning all the others.
Very nice bells, and very nice ringing too! Sound quality is definitely better than Liverpool Cathedral, but then so is everywhere!!! This is my leading tower for 12 bell quarters, and I rang my first on 12 and first of maximus here. (Total 12 bell quarters to date: 2)
@wazzock70, there were very few people who rang Exeter tenor behind single handed to a peal, and even fewer who turned it in, before the original headstock of rivetted iron construction was replaced with a new and much stiffer cast iron one about 20 or so years ago. I am just one of many who have since turned it in to a peal with comparative ease since it's rehanging. I wouldn't mind another before I get too old for it!
@wazzock70 Oh got the two peals I muddled up! I should have remembered that Duffield was a strapper for the Maximus peal. I've got the peal book which belonged to someone who rang in that peal in 1932.
@simonbellringer , I wouldn't say they are a waste of metal, they go fantastic and, when being rung properly, you can start to hear each individual bell as I did part way through a quarter.
@simonbellringer you must - they are beautiful sounding. Because of the height of the bell chamber though they sound best some distance away from the cathedral, so I am told. No video on here can possibly be a decent comparison to how they sound. Though it is undeniable that the clarity is terrible, but you can get used to them.
Super! Been hoping for a good quality vid of these bells for a long while. Was this a special trip or did you go to other towers in Devon too? I rang at St Mark's a few years ago before they were augmented and they were a super 8.
@LiamGroves He is not badmouthing new bellringers. I know Louis, and surprisingly, he's never referred to me as a shitter despite the fact I am not as good a ringer as he is. Now here Liam, have some tissue, dry your eyes off and stop jumping to conclusions.
@simonbellringer Liverpool go and handle better, Exeter are easier to hear. The video sound is much cleaner than the real thing. They are not that easy to hear. The local band have got them pretty well mastered.
@louisisyourgod ive seen a few of your comments around youtube, you are a very rude bell ringer and should be ashamed at the way you bad mouth new ringers, yes its an art form and should be taken seriously however calling new ringers or ones that arnt as good as yourself shitters is really crossing the line!
Wow... great video.
Amazing sound... I have rung there once... quite a few years ago now.

In the 30s there was that remarkable (for those days) peal of Cambridge Max where Pye rang the tenor single handed.
@LauraBellringer more distinct but not better sounding - even so, these are still magnificent!

very nice - i like these :]] certainly better sound quality then at liverpool!

I'd like to compare this to York Minster, both similar sounding rings of 12
@simonbellringer a waste of metal?? they are awesome and beautiful!
No way you can miss the sally here!. It's too big to miss.

Ed Hughes-D'aeth
@LauraBellringer i agree, Gail Porter kneeling on a carpet tack and screaming has better acoustics!
@louisisyourgod haha intresting way to describe!
Exeter by any chance? - I think the tenor sally should be longer!
@LiamGroves

Who's ringing the 9th?
