We have had many suggestions to watch some Epica videos. Here you go, this is our first reaction to Epica and we are excited to share it with you.
As always, Boo and Buster are in attendance. Buster is very wary of the camera. As you know he was an abused rescue and I think he's still getting used to all the love. He'll come around.
Really excited to watch Epica. Be patient and we will get back to Nightwish very soon.

Yes, you should definitely do more Epica. This band is not about 2-3 big hits, you can easily do two dozens of reactions and still enjoy it. They are among the biggest names in symphonic metal today and this was their more radio-friendly song. Both Nightwish and Epica are symphonic metal, though Epica can be much heavier (but they also have several wonderful ballads and acoustic versions of their songs).
For now, at least two band members for you to remember:
The gorgeous female lead singer is Simone Simons. You haven't heard her operatic soprano yet. It's beautiful. She's also a friend of Floor Jansen from Nightwish.
The growling guy is Mark Jansen, the founder and mastermind of Epica.
4 our of 6 band members have degree in music and they all contribute to songwriting. That's why Epica music is so diverse and amazing.
For something live, you can try for example:
Epica - The Essence Of Silence (OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO) - shorter song, slightly heavier
EPICA - Beyond The Matrix - Live at the Zenith (OFFICIAL VIDEO) - not too heavy, with catchy chorus

Hi SueSueandthewolfman, welcome to the wonderful world of EPICA,
they are a symphonic metal band from the Netherlands (Dutch), they released their first album in 2003 and have released 8 incredible studio albums, several EPs and many digital releases, generally speaking they tend to be more symphonic and also heavier than Nightwish and have definitely created a sound of their own.
Their catalogue of music is vast and varied, from the most beautiful ballads, very catchy songs, vast landscapes of music, prog metal masterpieces and sometimes very heavy but always musical, a difficult band to pin down because they cover so much musical ground, Epica are a class act, I absolutely love this band
Hi SueSueandthewolfman, the lead singer with Epica is Simone Simons, she was only 17 when she became the singer for Epica in 2002, she is considered to be a contemporary singer and classically trained (Soprano) singer, Simone and Floor (both Dutch) have been great friends for a long time and as you will discover they have sung together many times

LOVED YOUR REACTION! Recomendations from Epica: Chasing the Dragon, Unleashed, Design your Universe, all live from Retrospect 2013.
These are all musically and compositionally stunning songs, with live orchestra, live choir and a 3 months pregnant Simone singing her wonderful heart out! This contrast and dicotomy is all over Epica, the man growling, Mark, is psychologist and writes about stuff from the angle of the mind, while Simone is the voice of spirituality in the band. So the contrast is between mind and spirit, ego and selflessness and trying to harmonize the two. This is a running theme in their music.
All in for "Design Your Universe" Live at Retrospect! That is something else, from the intro to the outro... your spiritual strings will be tugged at. And if you like to take a look at those artistic videos first, the lead vid for EPICA's newest album, the single called "Abyss of Time" has a positive and quite mystical experience added to the wonderful song. Simone and Mark blend their voices to perfection, and there is a fitting apotheosis at the end. :)))

Great reaction! Here are some suggestions for Epica live: Obsessive devotion the retrospect concert with a full Orchestra! From the same concert design your universe and Stabat matar de la rosa and sancta terra those two songs are with Floor jansen as a guest. Consign to Oblivion live in Paris, The Essence of Silence live in Brussels, Kingdom of heaven part 1 live in Mexico city. Enjoy!!! Oh and the guy with the voice is Mark Jansen the founder of Epica no relation of Floor although they were in the Dutch band After Forever together...

This band is generally a bit heavier than Nightwish, although still in the symphonic category. Lead singer is Simone Simons.
Guitarist and harsh vocalist is Mark Jansen. Mark co-founded a band called After Forever, which was the first band Floor Jansen joined at age 16. Mark and Floor are not related.
Mark left in 2002 and formed this band, originally called Sahara Dust.
For more from them, try The Skeleton Key, Consign To Oblivion, Kingdom of Heaven Pt 3, The Phantom Agaony, or Sancta Terra (feat. Floor).
As with Nightwish, they are great live.
A 3rd symphonic band is Within Temptation. They are Dutch, as is Epica, and are generally not as heavy as Nightwish or Epica. Lead singer is Sharon Den Adel. If you want to check them out, try Ice Queen, Paradise (What About Us) feat. Tarja, or Shed My Skin feat. Annisokay.

Nice reaction! Welcome to Nightwish's darker , heavier cousins. Epica are big fans of the beauty and the beast contrast in singing and instrumentation. Thus Mark's harsh vocals vs Simone's angelic voice and heavy guitars vs symphonic instruments. So many great songs to explore over a 20 year existence. Kingdom of Heaven PT 3 from Omega Alive is one of their best performances. So epic. The Omega Alive video's look like music videos but they are from a live stream concert during the pandemic so no audience. Skeleton Key and Unchain Utopia from Omega Alive are both amazing. Then Design Your Universe and Chasing the Dragon from the Retrospect concert with a live orchestra and choir. One of my favorites is Essence of Silence live from Brussels. For some beautiful ballads Time and Tide (ua-cam.com/video/sn765tJuaoE/v-deo.html) and Rivers official visualizer video. Both make me cry every time. For something fun and beautiful, Simone's cover of Part of Your World from Little Mermaid (ua-cam.com/video/aau6nI04G9k/v-deo.html). A real life Ariel!
They just announced a North America tour with Sabaton for September and October. I already have my tickets for Boston!

Dutch symphonic metal band Epica was founded by guitarplayer / grunter/ composer Mark Jansen back in 2002.
Sofar they have released 8 studio albums. They incorperate grunts in their music but also massive choirs and orchestra. And of course they have soprano Simone Simons on leadvocals.
In 2013 they celebrated their 10th anniversary with a stunning show called 'retrospect' still a marker in the symphonic metal scene. Here a 70 piece orchestra and choir is live on stage! Take a look at the song ' Design your Universe' or 'Unleashed' . You can pick songs radomly from this show, it's all good.
Or maybe ' The Divine Conspiracy' from this same show, a song that has been overlooked by many reactors.
There will be a lot more suggestions I suppose, so enough to choose from..😉

You really need to watch the songs in their live retrospect concert. My favorite is Design Your Universe and also Unleashed. I think that will be right up your alley. Also, Floor Jansen from Nightwish guests with Simone in that concert for 2 songs (Sancta Terra and Stabat Mater Dolorosa), both of which are other-worldly. You don't need to watch the whole concert. They all have separate videos on YT.

If you liked Mark's harsh vocals and the contrast between him and Simone's angelic soprano, you will definitely love Epica. Just don't stop reacting to them after 2 songs. That would be a huge mistake.
They have long epic masterpieces well over 10 minutes, just like Nightwish. We just can't recommend you everything at once, but trust me, with Epica there's a lot to discover!

I'd say about 8 years ago a7x was probably my favorite band, then this was the first song I heard from Epica and I immediately bought their entire discography and they easily got into at least my top five favorite bands, maybe top 3 , so good 🎶🥰
I heard you say you normally do live versions, IMO you listen to studio versions first then the live so you got something to compare it to

Hi! I love 🖤 Nightwish 🖤 and i hear them since 1997. I know Epica for ~10 jears but didn't really hear them, only some songs here and there. But in the last 2 jears i also fell in love with 🖤 Epica 🖤 and their singer Simone ❤ Simons. They are after Nightwish my 2nd favorite band and they get every jear better. If you make more Epica reactions i think you would like the songs "The Skeleton Key", "Kingdom of Heaven Part 3" and "Unchain Utopia", do all songs fom the virtual live show "Epica - Omega Alive" what they did last year because that fu....g Covid virus. The whole show is a true Masterpiece! 🖤 I really love that album. I send you 2 greetings from Vienna! 🤘
I'd love to see you guys listen to Poets of the Fall, they're another band with a very unique sound, and have a whole fairly recent set of videos of live performances. I'd personally recommend Carnival of Rust from those Alexander Theatre sessions.

I swear I hate when nightwish fans in the comments suggest this and the Santa Tara with floor. Stop stop stop . This does not showcase epica.
Yeah but I've realized in the passing months to let them get it out and react to it. When they finish that and get to what Epica truly is, then they'll think differently of what the band is. That happened with VinandSori. They thought that Epica was just another version of Nightwish but when they heard Kingdom of Heaven and The Obsessive Devotion, they changed their minds. I officially say let's just hope they do more than just the duets with Floor and the mainstream songs.
