How to do Dhanurasana | Bow Pose in Ashtanga Yoga

  • While Dhanurasana is practiced in many schools of yoga, it doesn’t activate the physical body in the same way as it does in Ashtanga. Do you know why?
    In this tutorial, we’re showing you how to do DHANURASANA / BOW POSE and also PARSVA DHANURASANA / SIDE BOW. These classic backbending postures are practiced in Ashtanga's second series, the Intermediate Sequence. You’ll learn the traditional vinyasa cues and Sanskrit counts as David guides Jelena through the posture with additional info on the specific coordinates so you can check for proper alignment. You’ll get a step-by-step breakdown on how to access each part of the pose and tips on how to avoid injury or challenges such as knee or back pain. We’ll also show you which parts of your body need to be actively engaged to access Parsva Dhanurasana within your practice and what to do while you’re on your side.

    I love your videos. They are so highly educational and inspirational to my practice. Having recently transitioned to intermediate serie, i would be so greatful to see more advices on this one.     Dear Jelena and David,
    I’ve had a few teachers (not Ashtanga) adjust me in bow by pulling me back, shifting my weight from my abdomen to my hips. I’ve been trying to replicate that position on my own by kicking back hard to pull my abdomen off of the mat. Once again, your explanation and demonstration have clarified the pose beautifully, and I’m excited to put your teaching to use in the morning. Thank you!

    Wow.Attempting to catch my legs at the same time has provided a whole new challenge. I can no longer reach my ankles. Any tips to gain more flexibility.

    Thank you! This asana was added to my practice a couple of months ago and it’s good to know what I’m trying to achieve (e.g., toes pointing up). My teachers added intermediate series to my practice to open me up for backbends. At first I could barely lift my legs. It’s getting easier so I can now focus on fine tuning.

    I have been following the primary series, the express class and I haven't felt better in a while than when I do these vinyasa practices. Here's my choice of tutorials I would like to see:
    1. Veer bhadrasana A,B,C and the vinyasa with it.
    2. Some twisting poses that help strengthen the core and stimulate metabolism. Thanks a lot and when I am able to, I would love to support your work! Looking forward. Thank you 🙏🙏

    I was just trying to do this the other day after awhile of non-practice of primary series. It used to be very easy for me when I was young, but I struggled for the first time when trying this last week. A well timed video, luckily for me! Thank you!
