The best modeling tutorial I've seen, thanks opn
Dang, this is really cool. I too plan on having a Crimson Fist army. Thanks for the videos!!
You can indeed mate. I myself used to paint tanks with a standard brush. I would not now however, because it is much more quick, easy, and the end result is smoother with an airbrush :)
Looking excellent my friend, thanks for putting this series up!!!
It really works on very greasy resin models it helps to seal in those areas that good clean up will not remove :)
This video is bloody inspiring! Well done!
Awesome vid, it's like magic! Sweet backtrack too
You are 100% correct. I have addressed this problem on the finished tank. in the other parts in the series I show how I resolve this problem :)
You could do all the techniques with a regular brush for sure mate. The nature of the chipping and weathering actually helps hide blemishes that could occur using a regular brush on a large flat surface :)
Have a great Christmas mate :)
Great job on this tank chap, really nicely done ; )
It depends on your airbrush my friend. If you have one with a .large needle nozzle set up like a 4.0 it is fine to spray out neat. If not you can dilute it with a little water. the most important thing is make sure you clean your airbrush out asap after varnishing as it will gum up your airbrush like nothing else :)
for those decals you might want to get a rotary cutting knife, it's a bit like a compass with a knife blade attached at one point so you can cut perfectly circular discs, it's fantastic :D
Can't wait till the next update, I've started stripping all my Death Guard so I can redo them like this. Fantastic stuff..
Very interested to see how it works out on infantry size models too..
Thanks for the guide.
Clear and concise guide on your behalf, complimented with a hot brew on my behalf ;)
Music was a little loud at the end, but I guess that's been mentioned. I could still make out what was being said.
Fantastic and very helpful mate carnt wait for part two :)
this is awesome mate! very impressed!
I Can wait for next part.
I used vallejo because that is what i have, but there is many good brands on the market also. I hear that there is some great large size varnishes in the canvas style painting world that work great also like Daller rowney , winsor newton and many more :)
Really big thank you for this vid! Such detail in explanation can't wait for the next one cheers mate
Fantastic video. Thanks for the knowledge!
This is awesome man, really detailed and one of the best weathering tuts out there. Loved the decal tips too, will come in handy for every one. Thanks for sharing :)
god damn these guides are terrific
I have been looking all over for a good way to do it well. maybe I need to change my army :)
Was a great tutorial brother,
spud 11th Legion
Nice Work ... just love to see you'r painting vids.
Spent a couple of hours watching your videos and found them very useful. I have been making models for a couple of years, but you make it look so easy. I have all the gear, but no idea :) Also, just got my first airbrush and very eager to try it after watching your beginners guide. Great vids, your voice isn't annoying like a lot of them and you explain things very well. I would like to point out however, that I actually counted the number of times you say 'actually', and it's actually A LOT! Just kidding mate, keep up the good work.
Thx, for this great tuturial.
To be honest mate I need to see how the techniques scale on a 28mm mini.. As soon as i get chance I will experiment and upload a video of my results and how I did it. Cheers for the comment
Great tutorial!
I seal it in with a satin varnish. In this instance it was vallejo, but you can use another brand :)
Sweet tutorial, might have to give that chipping stuff a go.
Thank you my friend :)
To be honest it is a case of playing it by ear mate. Some times a slight rub will be enough other times applying a little more water and a bit more pressure is needed. You get a feel for it as your actually attacking the tank. :)
Hello from Germany, this is a very interesting and impeccable work!
The four films are inspiring.
Thank you, through this guide, I will improve my skills.
If you want to achieve a similar effect in less time (and you don't own an airbrush) you can stipple on masking fluid (preferably latex based) using a scouring pad or toothbrush, and then use a makeup applicator, or bit of cloth to rub it away once you've painted your next layer over that.
I'd actually recommend the method I've just described for your minifigs, since it allows you much more control than, perhaps, an airbrush would do on such a small area.
Also, decalfix is your friend. :P
You can get some great results using an old tooth brush and flicking the mud at the bottom of a vehicle :)
It is very easy with a pipette you will see me use them in a future video. It is much more easy to show people thinning paint in a pallet versus trying to film the process in a airbrush cup.
Great vid bud, I really like that weathering technique.looking forward to the next vid.cheers bruv.JustonTSB
Thank you so much for this great tutorial.
She is a beauty !
good effect bud, thanks for vid :)
Great tutorial !!!! :)
Dark colors work just fine if you follow this rule
Dark Tanks Light Rust
Light Tanks Dark Rust
For CF basecoat the whole tank with Hull Red spray some brighter orange patches where there would be rust.
Then Worn Effects or Heavy Chipping fluid
Then remove as shown
very cool vid i leant loads keep up the good work opn thanks
Really nice vid bruv keep up the good work :D
lol so true mate just one of Uncle Papa Nurgle's botty burps is enough to rot the toughest of armour. I imagine the smell as the bog of eternal stench from the film labyrinth lol
Maybe I will one day. I paint what ever catches my fancy these days as I no longer wargame :)
Yo could do that my friend for sure, but i will be honest darker colours will not work as well :) unless you was doing a winter weathering technique with a cold white chip over the blue maybe.
Great tutorial man. One thing though - your voice seemed to get quieter as the video went on. Again though, great video and I can't wait for the next one :)
I apologize for the poor sound. the strange thing is that the sound levels was fine on raw footage, but the youtube conversion changed it some how :(
Please, next time make the music just a background ambient... in some parts it was really hard to hear you. Nevertheless, this was one amazing tutorial! Gonna use it for painting soon. :) Thanks!
I would use a lighter tone for chipping like a light grey maybe :)
Great vid I can see how easy you made it look here is my question what you did with an airbrush could that be done with a regular brush? Also I like the heavy paint chipping really give the model a good damage look
Thanks for the advice :)
it is a song from incompetech written by Kevin Macloeod :)
OK thanks ill check them out. thanks for the help :)
That would be hard to pull off using metallic paint and having a colour show up underneath would not be ideal. maybe using a black for the undercoat then chipping your chosen metallic over the top of the black. I do think it is a hard colour to make work with this technique. If you try it let me know how you get on mate :)
Great videos, learned so much! Thank you. What is the music you're playing in the background ???
I hate you, you almost made me do death guard with your pure awesomeness :)
Because it would not have looked correct the green stripe needed to show colour underneath if they was applied at the same time both colours would have been removed :)
Thank you for this amazing tutorial ! I wanted to know what kind of airbrush. Do you use ? I want to start myself using one but I don't know where to start , if you could give me an advice on starting brands would be very grateful .
Halfords primers are great in the UK as they a real surface primers. I am sure that GW paints are not really primers and just pressurised spray paint. From what I am aware GW rattle can paints are not ideal for forge world resin.
nice job, I still believe the emperors finest actually clean their gear though.
Thank you. I agree I did go a little OTT with the music lol
Thank you for the reply :)
Thank you all for such awesome comments :)
Great vid. Are you going to chip the decal to look more the part of the tank. In my opinion, if the tank or vehicle is to be chipped and weathered, shouldn't any decal also be the same?
Great tutorial, you make it look so simple. Now I think I might have to order some more stuff :-)
But regarding the chiping with the brush. Did you have to press down relatively heavy or just lightly brush over it?
What are the advantages of using the chipping solution over using hairspray?
Would it be possible to apply the chipping solution to smaller models on a smaller scale without an airbrush? I was thinking of using this technique to weather marines around the boots, lowers legs, knees, those sorts of areas, would this work? Or are there more appropriate techniques to achieve this?
Many thanks, and great vids! :)
One question I have had for a long time with my airbrush is whether I need to thin the vallejo varnishes (satin etc.) and if so, do I just use the vallejo airbrush thinner? A reply would be GREATLY appreciated, Thanks OPN!
Sorry for the delay, but sure it was Russian green. but this was over 8 months ago sorry for delay
About the Heavy Chipping fluid, I'm completely sold. I just got a question. If I want to shade my model by let's say using my hairbrush to give a basecoat and then bring a light color to shade in the center. Will the chipping fluid take out BOTH of my layers?
For those who don't own an airbrush, how would you recommend priming FW models?
hey there. i was wondering what satin varnish would you recommend?
Hey there. I do crimson fist would you do the same thing but inside of white a dark blue?
Peace
Congratulations on a great series - and so realistic also. My only gripe would be the music, sometimes it's a bit intrusive and I can't always hear what you;re saying. Great stuff though.
+David Wood my newest videos are much better with better sound quality. I hope you check them out
Question- why didnt you paint the green stripe when you were painting th white and chip them at the same time?
how cold I weather a metal colured tank, for example an iron warriors one? please give me some help, I need it. Thanks
Hey mate, not sure if you'll see this comment but I was wondering if you'd recommend this same strategy of weathering on infantry?
As I´m sadly not owning an Airbrush... do you have any experiences for weathering without using an Airbrush? I know it makes much of the work easier and faster but at the moment I cannot aford to buy one so I´d be realy interested in some techniques if you know some! And besides, great tutorial but as some people allready said, the music is way too loud, especialy at the end.
15 hours seems like a long time to paint a tank? I wish I could paint one that fast, I paint so slowly that I sometimes travel back in time
I have another question what if you are like using black or a really dark color? because im planning to make a custom army (related to dark angels but in my own scheme) and its going to be like CoD ghosts
a reply would be very nice
how come u don't use hairspray for the weathering technique
What do you use to clean your airbrush?
well said bruv :)
I do not trust hair spray as the results could differ from brand to brand, If it works for other users though its all good. To be honest the chiping solution only cost me about £5, it works great and will last ages :)
I know it will work every time :)
Are you planing on painting troops the same way?
lol What about the ruining powers of chaos? Papa Nurgle rots anything ; )
can you use a paintbrush instead?
hey what kind of tank that is model ?
Forgeworld Deimos Pattern Predator.
Fantastic videos :), though i have to agree about the music, does get a bit much and hard to hear you talk at times. :/
It is a forgeworld pre heresy predator :)
Yeah what is that tank?
Why you dont make any airplane?
I think your a little off the mark here. The fluff and artwork for the Death guard is rusty as hell bud.
To be honest I wanted to go for a realistic weathered look some times your own artistic vision is more important than a passage in a book. The phrase "artistic license" springs to mind even though in this case it follows fluff. Its great you like to make your vehicles dirty we all have our own style. the world would be a little boring if we all did things the same. Have a great Chrimbo :)
Sorry it spoiled your enjoyment :(
No I will not ;)
The tank is just stunning and your progression as a painter is scary. This tutorial is your best vid to date. Gonna help me out a lot ;)
