    I know it's been several months since you posted this video series - many thanks for putting in the time and effort! They were really helpful. I ended up using this, the OWC video on PCIe SSD upgrade, and the iFixIt forum for guidance. I upgraded a late-2103 27-inch 3.4 GHz Core i5-4670 with the nVidia GeForce GTX 755 + 2 GB VRAM 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD and 16 GB RAM to:
    Intel Core i7-4771 3.5 GHz CPU
    Sabrent Rocket Q 1 TB PCIe NVMe M.2 (boot drive)
    Crucial MX500 1TB SSD (data drive)
    32 GB Timetec DDR3 1600 MHz RAM
    RAM, obviously is trivial to upgrade. And - following the OWC PCIe SSD upgrade video - the SSD and PCIe NVMe SSD drive upgrades went very smoothly - this gave the biggest bang for the buck - there was a 400%+ increase in Read/Write speeds and system boot time dropped from 73 seconds to 19. Everything starts and runs smoothly.
    The CPU upgrade, however, was a nightmare. I managed to bork the upgrade the first time - wrestling the compression spring for the heat sink resulted in bent pins on the Haswell socket. The system was dead. No bueno. I tore everything back down, scrapped all the thermal paste off (for the second time), carefully used a fine point tweezer to bend the socket pins back, reinstalled the Core i7 CPU, and put the system back together. This time, I got the three-beep error and had to reseat the RAM chips. After that, the system started and I was hugely relieved.
    I'm getting nearly identical benchmarks as you. The upgrade from the 3.4 GHz (dual core, 4 thread) to the 3.5 GHz (4 core, 8 thread) didn't do much for the Geekbench 5 scores, but the Cinebench 20 score improved by 30%, which is good since I'm hoping to use the system for video editing.
    All in all, I think that a 7-year old iMac is still a pretty good deal in you're in the Apple ecosystem and need a good, all-around system. It certainly works well enough to handle video editing - especially since Apple apps tend to be well optimized for macOS. I'm also using this for digital photography (Photoshop, Lightroom, and Bridge) and digital music production (mostly Ableton Live, FL Studio 20, and some Logic Pro X). Even the more demanding apps are running very smoothly. I have no complaints.
    Anyway, thought I'd stop by, say thanks, and let you know that your videos are still being used and enjoyed.
    Cheers!
    J

      Hey man, thanks for taking the time for commenting! I really think this upgrade is great and considering to make a 2020 iMac upgrade video in 2 years.
      About the 2013 iMac for video editing the best upgrade you could do would be an egpu.
      I am running the amd 5700xt and it gives exporting times like a maxed out Mac Pro.
      I made a whole video about egpu on older macs so you should check it out.
      Of course it becomes quite expensive for a 700$ egpu setup but you could upgrade your Mac in the future and continue to use an egpu setup

So far, FCP is working really smoothly - scrubbing is flawless, although I'm only working on 1080p files. In time, I'll give 4K a shot.. And thanks for the heads up about eGPU's - I'll have to look into that. Cheers! J

    Thanks so much for the video! I have iMac 27” late 2013 (661-8124 Logic Board, 3.5GHZ, I7, 4GB). I have a logic board problem so want to try replacing the graphics card and CPU myself. I read almost all the comments to get more info. I see you used the i7-4771 for the CPU. Can you please tell me which graphics card you used for the replacement and how to get rid of them from the logic board(probably heating?) I would much appreciate if you can share item links such as cleaning supplies and thermal glue that you used(or recommend). Thank you again!

    • @ShadesOfTech
      @ShadesOfTech  4 роки тому +2

      You can technically replace the logic board and the CPU as I showed in this video is easily upgradable. But the gpu is soldered so it's really professional grade stuff. I suppose you should de-solder and heat up but I have never done it and I think the risk of damaging the gpu is very high. The best thing would be to find a logic board with the gpu you want and then upgrade just the CPU.
      Anyway I used the 4771 and it's quite powerful.
      You just need to clean the thermal paste with this amzn.to/2z7xubr
      I used thermal grizzly amzn.to/3czNL6r
      and then some screwdrivers amzn.to/2XCpPvd

    How has your Mac has been? I installed a 4770 on my late 2013 21.5 iMac, but the iMac supposedly used on the maximum configuration available the 4770s, which has a TDP of 64 watts, and the 4771 and 4770 both have a TDP of 84 w, so have you run into trouble? or does your system has been running cool and good?

    • @ShadesOfTech
      @ShadesOfTech  4 роки тому +3

      I want to make clear this is a 27” not a 21.5” so I suggest you for the 21.5” to use the one officially supported.
      In theory if you already confirmed that the architecture supports that tdp it should work on the hardware side. Not sure about the software support tho.
      For me so far so good! Just hear the fans kick in while rendering and exporting in FCPX

      Hi, just noticed this. I have a 21.5” 2.9GHz but I can’t find any clear answers on this, everything is conflicting. Some say 2.7GHz is soldered and 2.9/3.1 is socketed. What did you find when you replaced it and which one did you have prior?
      Thanks.

    Great Job!! @Shades of Tech
    Just two quick questions, do you have any motherboard/fan problems with this upgrade?
    And if there is any way to find out which processors are compatible with any mac?

    • @ShadesOfTech
      @ShadesOfTech  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, I noticed the fan generally louder while exporting video with fcpx or while background rendering because the new cpu spikes power and temperature compared to the old one. So I reopened, reapplied thermal paste (I didn’t used enough) so I got 5 Celsius less under load.
      However in general is more powerful so needs more cooling

    • @ShadesOfTech
      @ShadesOfTech  4 роки тому +1

      About the CPU model in general for upgradable Mac you can put all the cpu that Apple sold on its website in the upgrade to order. Those should work without any concern. You can find more info on this site searching for your Mac model. everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i5-3.4-27-inch-aluminum-late-2013-specs.html
      You can risk to use different cpu but you have to check if the socket is the same and if someone else has already tried it and had success, otherwise I wouldn’t risk. You just write on google “iMac 2013 CPu” and read some blogs or reddit

      Hi, thanks a lot! The highest cpu you can put is the one I use in the video which is the maxed out cpu that apple included in original 2013 iMacs. Every different cpu isn’t supported. There are some users on web that manage to use different cpu but it’s a long shot and you’re not sure about succeeding until you boot it up and it’s a complex upgrade so I would go for supported cpu only

    NEVER put too much thermal paste. It makes it worse. A thin layer of thermal paste, basically a blob the size of a pea, is adequate -> by that I mean, a blob size of the pea is enough to spread over the heatsink/core

      Officially the i7 4771 and the gtx 780m 4 gb are the highest end possible. You can change the sata hd with a 2,5” ssd and even if you didn’t have the fusion drive, use an m.2 adaptor with m.2 ssd. I went with 2+1 Tb but I think that if your budget allows you can go up to 4 Tb total.
      About ram 32 Gb is the maximum. I had a subscriber that tried 48 and it worked for some time but then had kernel panic, so I would stick with the apple supported max
      If you want to know more here’s a playlist with dedicated videos for each upgrade on the same machine the 2013 27” iMac.

    I recently upgraded my 2013 iMac from the base i5 to the i7 (4771). I noticed when doing certain tasks that the fan is coming on, which didn't happen before, has anyone noticed this? Thanks

    • @ShadesOfTech
      @ShadesOfTech  3 роки тому +3

      Yeah I noticed it too for example while exporting in FCPx. It’s because the i7 is more powerful and creates more heat so the heat sink has to dissipate more and the fan kicks in. Also the i7 makes faster bursts from 0 to 100% and this means that the fan curve suddenly goes from idle to max

  • @Gmon750
    @Gmon750 3 роки тому +1

    This video conveniently skips over (on purpose?) the difficulty in re-installing the heat sink back over the CPU and GPU. The RAM shroud blocks any and all attempts to properly align the CPU heat sink without making a mess of the thermal paste all over the motherboard, particularly on the GPU side. I consider myself very skilled and meticulous and even my skills were tested to the max. After twice removing the heatsink to clean up the messy thermal paste, I ended up having to remove the plastic RAM shroud permanently in order to get the CPU heat sink properly over the socket.
    It is VERY easy to bend a CPU pin!! Be warned, this video is making it look easier than it really is. Do so at your own risk!

      It was the first time I opened an iMac or a Pc in general and found it very intuitive and easy. I just followed the ifixit guide step by step.
      I didn't skip on porpouse the mounting back, for me the "hardest" part was to open, not to close. I just wanted to tell my experience more than a step by step guide, there are plenty of that already and focus on the benefits.

    • @melchora7
      @melchora7 3 роки тому +1

      I also removed the memory cage, but you can reinstall it after the heatsink is in place by cutting the cage on the low side with one cut, which allows you to spread the cage wider to reinstall it. The screws will hold everything in place once your reinstall it.

      @@paul.454 Tremendous Upgrade! I was considering to make this upgrade myself if I could get a 2017 iMac.
      The process is the same of what I did.
      Be sure to use a lot of thermal paste because the 7700k "k" means oveclock so it heats up a lot. I know that the 7700k is supported for sure because you can upgrade with the same models apple used and the maxed out cpu has it.
      Here more info everymac.com/systems/by_year/macs-released-in-2017.html
      The 7700 was used in the 21.5" 2017 iMac so I am not sure if it works because the system shouldn't recognise a 27" iMac with a 7700. So if you don't want any trouble go with 7700k.

Here's Intel official page ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/77656/intel-core-i7-4771-processor-8m-cache-up-to-3-90-ghz.html

You could have also explained the difference between the various I7 processors.

      As I said at the beginning of this series this is not intended to be a tutorial but just me reporting my experience. About the cpu upgrade the swapping part was so fast. The difficult part was to get to remove everything.
      As far as I know the i7 4771 is the only i7 cpu that can be installed in the late 2013 iMac.
      About thermal paste the first time I made an horizontal line as the guides suggest. But then I realised I didn’t put enough paste so opened again and this time made a cross with four points. More paste is better than less. Then closed up and got average 5 degree less.
      I am definitely no expert this was my first time but if you have any question be sure to ask me

    thanks for the great video. i was a little worried i'd have a hard time with you accent, because it sounded strong, but i understood every word within a second of you saying it, so i never paused or replayed because if it. i wanted to know which cpu to use cause i thought i might use the i7 4790K, but it must be for a newer imac, i have the same year as yours and you are the second person to recommend the i7 4771 (no k). i am excited to do the upgrade, plus ram, new paste but you missed the opportunity to leave the HD in place (or upgrade it as you did?) and replace or add the m.2 as the boot drive, if it was sold as a fusion HD system as shown here: ua-cam.com/video/Y3-n-iBCvqc/v-deo.html

    • @ShadesOfTech

      Happy you understood everything! Yeah I wouldn’t risk the 4770k because k means over lock and the thermal system of the 2013 iMac is not designed for over locking. Then I am not sure if it’s compatible. If you do as I did you are 100% sure it works because it’s the same apple used.
      I upgraded both the sata Hd and the m.2 to ssd and I loved it. Remember the OWC thermal sensor for the sata ssd otherwise fan will go full blast all the time.
      If you have a fusion drive you can do it but the drives will be speared. If you want you can create a new fusion but it’s complicated.

      with the K model, i could also under clock, still i don't want to waste $200 or so, but i could sell it if it didn't work. i use it for music, so i do not want fan noise.
      i assumed adding the m.2 would show as a separate drive. i hadn't considered making a fusion drive. i think mine is a 2 TB fusion drive. i guess it is part spinning disk, so upgrading the spinning disk to SSD increases the performance. it might be cool to upgrade both to NVMe. i know apple is compatible with certain hardware, and i will not buy hardware as an experiment unless i am willing to try to sell it if it doesn't work, but i don't know how easy it is to sell. is there a limit to the memory size? would 2 @ 2 TB drives = a 4 TB fusion drive work? i'll check out your other video, thanks
