I was a 9-year-old Cub Scout from Petoskey when, on 01 September 1962, I boarded in my Scout Uniform with other members of the Scout Den on the last Chesapeake and Ohio train trip between Charlevoix and Petokey. I've been hooked on travel by rail ever since. All aboard!
Great video. I've always wondered why David DeWard's Detroit and Charlevoix Railroad never made it to it's intended northern terminus. Too bad they didn't make it. The Michigan Central Railroad (itself controlled by the New York Central Railroad) took control of the D&C in 1907. As it turned out, the MC was fully absorbed into the NYC in 1930. Then the NYC almost immediately abandoned the East Jordan Branch, and the tracks were pulled up a short time later. Had DeWard been successful in his bid to reach Charlevoix, those tracks may have lasted far longer. You also wonder aloud where Snowflake is when talking about the Dummy train to Bellaire. It is located on Intermediate Lake three miles south of Central Lake. Today, this location is marked only by Snowflake Rd off M-88.
Wow - Great history here!
