Intermediaries using the Prophet and Walis of Allah are permissible in Islam, and various scholars from Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jama'ah, even from the Salaaf as-Saalih had agreed on this.
Below are two examples of proof regarding the aforementioned matter:
1. A hadeeth, narrated by way of 'Uthman bin Hunayf radiyallahu 'anhu, that a blind man had asked the Prophet SAW to ask Allah SWT to cure his blindness. The Prophet SAW then ordered the man to perform two rak'ah prayer and taught him this du'aa: "O Allah, I ask You, and I direct myself to You in supplication by our Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of Mercy. O Muhammad, I direct myself to Allah by you, so my need [here the specific need is mentioned] would be fulfilled."
You can find this in Mu'jam al-Kabir of Imam at-Tabrani rahimahullah.
2. Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal rahimahullah invoked the name of Muhammad Rasulullah SAW as an intermediary between him and Allah SWT. Imam Ahmad rahimahullah said to Abu Bakr al-Marwazi as narrated in al-Insaf fi Ma`rifat al-Rajih min al-Khilaf `ala Madhhab al-Imam al-Mubajjal Ahmad ibn Hanbal by 'Ala ad-Din al-Mardawi, "Let him use the Prophet as a means in his supplication to Allah.”
There are others, but I believe the two statements above should give you a definite proof of the permissibility of using the Prophet's name as an intermediary (tawassul). Jazakallah.
