Most any jewelry store or watch store will replace your watch battery for you for relatively little cost.

Do you think you will ever move back to Japan especially if you keep increasing your level of Japanese/ taking these tests ?

Similar to you: Vocabulary (should develop more in Japan), the Kanji (Takes a lot of effort, but I think your method is decent), and for me the Grammar. Grammar is supposed to be easy i know, but its tough to get perfect every time so my sentence structure becomes elementary looking. I like the idea of -handwriting- workbooks, and possibly better idea is adding in a Japanese paragraph maybe a couple times a week for writing abilities/caligraphy. Also, I ordered a Japanese keyboard that goes on your Laptop for any online assignments in Japanese. (N2 Level here).

Yeah practicing producing Japanese on a regular basis (writing) is a good idea!

What is the test really like? Do you actually have to write to answer? Or kind of like scan-tron? Or both? (I am a Japanese national and do not need to take the test). You seemed so relaxed on the day of the test, and I hope you will pass it!

It’s all multiple choice (like scantron). And there are sections for vocabulary/kanji, grammar, reading, and listening. Thank you!

This is so exciting!! :D I really hope you pass! Do you think you'll take the more advanced exam later, once you pass this one?

I guess so! But I still don’t feel confident in the N3 material so I’ll need to learn a lot more of that first

I feel like going to school in America in an era of STAR, CST, AP, and SAT exams has conditioned us to take standardized tests almost instinctively.

Have you heard of wanikani? it really makes studying kanji soooooo much easier and now is the section I feel most confident with :-)
I'm taking N3 in july. I've finished the Integrated approach to Intermediate Japanese but now need to consolidate my learning. I am now struggling with vocab - as you said, I know it as a flashcard but not in context so I am going to read A LOT before the exam. I wish I could do language exchanges but I feel too shy for them, especially as most people are in their 20s but i'm in my 30s so I feel a little old and boring I guess! Your experience in Japan and with language exchange people will mean you will be really great at applying your learning, which is awesome.
I use wanikani for kanji, bunpro for grammar revision and a vocab app on my phone. I also use satori reader for reading.

Yes I have! You have to pay for it though right? I wonder if it’s that much better than Memrise that it’s worth it?

    • @Holly_hamigakiko

@@logiebear massively better than memrise I found. In the new year, they do a mega sale so I would recommend splurging for lifetime and then you have it forever. i found that with wanikani, the readings unconsciously come back to you. for example, this year I have had to pause study as my dad has been unwell, yet, despite it being months since I had used it, I read an article and the readings just came back. How they group with the radicals also helps you see the correlation between radical and reading too, giving you a good guess at how an unfamiliar kanji can be read. Personally, I didn't have the same results with memrise; I think the strange and whimsical mnemonics they use in wanikani really works. As you are N3, you might be slightly frustrated starting from scratch, but it is really good recap and the community is lovely too.

Thanks I’ll look into it! Btw my language partner is in her 50s (I’m guessing) so you don’t have to feel weird about your age!

On italki! I used the messaging part of the app and talked to Japanese people who are learning English. Eventually, some people asked me to Skype with them and we kept it up weekly
