This is one or my fave CBSRMT episodes, in the myriad of faves. Also, I’m grateful the description includes the actors. Although I usually enjoy trying to guess who is playing, it’s nice to be able to check the description when I can’t.
This was based on The Lipstick Murders back in Chicago during the 40's. The murderer, William Heirens attended U of Chicago. My mother who studied art met Bill Heirens in the cafeteria with her friends that had classes with him. She described him as mostly shy and kinda quiet.
Marie Belloc-Lowndes's "The Lodger" is one of the best books I had ever read. This story is completely different; it just has the same name. I hate the commercials so much, but in the case of this story, because it was so enjoyable, it wasn't the most horrible thing in the world to click to avoid them, but when I work in the garden, I cannot listen to stories with commercials. I'm glad we are told that they have commercials. I am paying extra so I don't have to listen to UA-cam commercials. Commercials are a terrible price to pay for great entertainment. They destroy the aura, the emotional flow of the story.
Thank you for the upload, which I always enjoy. Is Kim Hunter the same lady who starred in "A Streetcar Named Desire" ? I watched the film in DVD only a few days ago. "Stella" was an impressive role.
I thought I already listened to this one, but to my surprize, no! Sounds like a montage of the old LODGER story and The Lipstick Murders in Chicago many years ago! Interesting adaptation.
I love this one too. But some others that are among my absolute faves are The Onyx Eye, You're Going To Like Rodney, Devil's Boutique, Figure in the Moonlight, The House On Chimney Pot Lane, Return To Shadow Lake, A Little Night Murder, The Summer People, Sleepy Village, and Saginaw Cottage. And for a great comedic one, "Laundrey Money".
@AtomicOrgasm haha! I thought the same thing. I think the writer was trying to make him seem suspicious. It didn't really make sense because in other scenes, he was very likable. I guess that was the writer's way of keeping us guessing.
The following comment contains NO SPOILERS!!!! History has taught us that serial killers like the one in this radio show, who claim to be terrifying, make Hannibal Lecter look like a vegetarian, etc. are almost always JUST ANOTHER NORMAN BATES!!!!!!
YUP. Very close. Possibly an adaptation. The crazy in this version was driven to murder by his girlfriend's obsession with Chinese stuff. The killer in the British version was played by Peter Lorre and he was an over the top religious nut who didn't believe in music, but had not problem with killing people (esp women) to "Cleanse their souls".
Please, please, please, remove thd commercials. I listen to CBSRMT to "get away" for awhile. These commercials kinda seem like I took here "away" with me the whole while &, although nostalgic, just kinda run at me blended into the smoke cloud of bombarding ads I'm here to escspe. Anyway. I do enjoy the theater very much & thank you for getting them out here to us. Thank you much, Kim

This is among one of my favorite CBS Mystery Radio episodes.
Mine as well Amy ... but I have a bunch of favorite episodes if I’m being honest! Cheers
This is a great episode. Definitely one of my favorites.

Wasn't there a movie too?
Absolutely enthralling
The Shop Right commercial is classic 😆😆
Getting chills already! Still on Act 1. Thank you sooooo much for another gem!!!🧜♀️
I remember these commercials lol
Great - thanks for posting another great CBSRMT episode! Especially with the original ads - really takes me back.
Great window ! Stop ME !! Backwards !
A real good one.
I knew it!!!! This is probably my favorite one.....truly suspenseful....
This is amazing! I have been waiting a long time for this! Great :)
Boy, this is a jim dandy of a caper !
She also played 'June' in 'A Matter of Life and Death' with David Niven.

And I hope you realized these were not UA-cam commercials, but were the original ads from the airing of the show.
❤❤❤❤❤ from England
Good adaptation of the famous story (Hitchcock did a silent version)...Is he or isn't he...?

tubelover413 I love old film but had never saw "a street car named desire" until a month ago. It is one of my favs
Did Ms Mapes also play a pair of human skin shoes in another episode? I guess she would be Mary Jane Higby.

B Davis my fav ever.

A hole in the story is why the reporter had the right color lipsticks in his suitcase.
It was otherwise good though.

Been a lot better without the commercials.
Oh crap! Its the imposter cop!

I appreciate your kind reply and info. Zira in "Planet of the Apes" !! Yes, I remember.
Many thanks from the Far East.
The man in the Buick Apollo commercial sounds like Michael Wager (who played Tony Adams in the play). Does anyone know if it's him?
That Adams dude is so abrasive and insensitive. "Upstairs WHAT?!" And right after the murder he asks Nell "what's the matter"? What a dope!
I think the ol man did it
This sounds like the old British version the lodger.

Playing on Tubi😉
So no one linked this story to the weepy killer who cries a confession to the police over the phone after his murders.
"You're all alike, you widows!"
F***in' widows, man - I swear
Mandarin Scarlet sounds like a horribly bright, cheap and garish shade of orange-red, perfect for such a tacky crime.
thanks again m t r

Chilly sunshine does these w/out ads. Enjoy!

A classic whodunit.
