Drop YOUR favorite Comp Plugs 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
I like Universal Audio's Teletronix compressor plugins, very quick and simple to use when I just don't feel like dealing with all of the many knobs on Logic's compressors.
Arousor is a pretty good compressor
Acustica El Rey2, Korneff Pawn Shop 2 both of these I use on Vocals mostly, just got the Audio Scape V comp and am starting to play with that.
Tim Petherick Opto 1B.
Lately I found the SSL Blitzer as a very versatile distressor style comp where you can do 15dB on vocals and not even notice the compression that much...
Also the Softube SMC-2B to be the multiband mixbus magic compressor which feels great even when compared to the hardware!
And then ofc. the Softube Germanium (if you know how to set it correctly) and pretty much whole Chandler bundle is on another level when it comes to in the box compressors...
Klanghelm MJUC. You could literally use only this compressor for a whole Mix, so many flavours and sounds great.
Klanghelm MJUC - one of the best value, most versatile plugin compressors you can buy. Also love the SSL compressors on my focusrite liquid mix
To change it up -- anything by Kush Audio. I especially love The Pusher and Novatron. Greg's stuff is WAY underrated. I subscribe to his entire collection.
Great list! There are so many 0:03 !! A couple that are fun/interesting/forgotten additions:
For an SSL buss comp alternative, the Townhouse version at Plugin Alliance sounds like a record to me.
An amazing, underdog compressor that has seemingly been long forgotten is the Millennia Media TCL-2, tube/solid state simulation, also at PA. In a shootout with about a dozen competitors, that device won over a lot of popular options at PA and beyond (and PA has a shit ton of compressors in their roster). That compressor with about 50-10% dry mixed in is really a great finisher. The tube/solid state option is also a bonus. Very, very transparent while still achieving moderate dBs of compression and a lovely glueing effect that was far more musical than the others.
And for Waves fans/haters, a quick run down: the Rcomp (still a champ for mild, neutral compression); the Kramer Pie/Pye compressor, for something unusual and truly unique; the Abbey Road RS124 for a vintage gush of peace and love; the Linear Phase Multiband just for old times’ sake; and the Vocal/Bass Rider for miraculous time saving (is it a fancy compressor or what??). You wanted Waves you got Waves!
So many more…!
My favorite SSL-style bus compressor is the PA bx_Townhouse. But very nice list. I will try the PA SPL comp.
Townsend has so much vibe.
Yep, the Townhouse is mine too.
Agreed. Great sound and has the LPF to stop the low end causing pumping.
The SPL IRON is crazy good. I use it on my mix bus...it's crazy how it can glue your sound. Thanks Colt, you hit the nail on the head you are 💯 Peace!!
I totally love the SPL Iron 👌🏼
It’s so underrated!
@@ColtCapperrune Try it on bass sometime 👌🏼
Yes, I like this sort of content. Perfect for my morning coffee!😊 Now i shall go mix...
SPL Iron is golden. Enjoying these lately… Arturia Diode, Neold U17, Lindell 354e, Pulsar 1178, Elysia Alpha, Bettermaker Bus
have u tried the new neold comp, man its chunky
Love all these but that Neold is something special in terms of its color!
There are so many compressors I love. My current two obsessions are the UAD API 2500 and the Kush Audio AR-1. The API has a bunch of tone and filter options that allow you to get very specific with the sound. The Kush Audio compressor is based on vintage vari-mu compressors and is great for anything you want to sound "tubey" or just "vibey."
I also use a lot of the usual suspects. DBX 160, SSL, 1176, etc. UAD and Plugin Alliance are probably my two current favorite plugin companies. I also use many of the Waves classics. And yeah, the Fab Filter Pro-MB is great for multiband needs.
Thanks for the video, Colt. To me the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor Class A by PA is just unbelievable. I'm used to using some very high end pieces of hardware on my workflow, and this is one plugin that just feels like hardware to me. Other than that, PA's new Glue Compressor is pretty amazing, and is my current basic track EQ. For mastering, if I already didn't use a Tube-tech SMC 2B and a Manley Vari-Mu hardware, I'd go with the Softtube and Pulsar's versions. Amazing transparent (yet filled with character) compressors.
Great list!! I would add the Softube Bus compressor, Cenozoix Compressor and Unisum 😍🙏
One of my favorites overall is the CL-1B for vocals. In some cases I can push close to 20 dB of gain reduction and it sounds absolutely amazing! And of course the classic LA-2A for acoustic guitars is my magic bullet. For some unknown reason I've never been able to connect very well with the 1176. And also the Focusrite Red is my go-to for drum bus duties.
Analog or plugin?
@@p4493 the plugins, as the video is about ITB compresssors.
@@bryanrosario1361 I make jungle, recently have had a lot of luck with the UAD 1176 to make sounds ‘pop’. With it’s fast attack, it really thickens up a signal, especially on the blue stripe version where the grit it adds is great for my breakbeats/snares!
@@bryanrosario1361 is the focusrite red a good compressor you would recommend ?
@@monarchdrumandbass8700 I've used it a lot but usually is one of those that I reach when I am looking for something my usuals are not giving me.
I gotta say if you love the 176 plugin, the Retro 176 might satisfy your hardware craving. I haven’t used the vintage ones, but I have two of the Retro ones and they are unbelievable. They make the plugin sound cloudy and dark in comparison. You can hit them really hard and they compress effortlessly. When you put the interstage transformer in, they get this really nice high end sheen that makes things come to life. The attack knob in (program dependent release time) makes them sound a little more transparent, and when you pull the attack knob out, they get much grabbier and more aggressive. They’re killer on bass too… they do this cool thing to the low mids that makes P-basses come alive. They’re amazing on mix bus too. Well worth the investment
This is a solid list. I would like to add the UAD API-2500. I bought it because one your earlier video reviews. I do not regret purchasing this one bit and stay’s on my drum bus. Would love to buy the hardware one day.
100 - i’ve been doing a more modern saturated approach to drum bus for about a year now, which is stellar for modern sampled drum stuff in most pop, latin, hip hop genres, and it was very good for live drums, but i’ve absolutely made the switch to a basic rbass, black box, and api2500 drum bus now. extra sauce from time to time, but that reigns everything in so nicely on live drums. The 2500 doesn’t really do a “tone” like more colorful transformer rich things do, but maaaaaan nothing beats it for live drums. it handles quicker attacks without killing the transient somehow. #magic
I forgot about this one!
Love the way it shapes drums.
Love the Comp video!!! Soothe 2, Fab Filter Pro MB, UA Plugins for days! I do like UA's SSL E Channel too! I know it's not exclusively a comp, but love it's tone for a plugin! Also, gonna try the 176! Thanks for the rec!
I've been looking at compression the wrong way for a long time. I always thought compression was just for taming transients and keeping things level.
I just recently learned that the main goal of compression is to bring things out and make them even more prominent in the mix. It's also for exaggerating transients, not just taming them. They give the song more life, not less.
That might seem obvious to some, but the more I learn, the more I realize I don't know shit
I have recently come to this discovery too! I make jungle, and have realised that using different types of compressors and compression on breakbeats can really give them different flavour, and almost an altered sense of rhythm if you compress them with this sort of musicality in mind
I think what you're describing fits the Dunning-Kruger effect
@@Indigo_Jams in what way?
@@monarchdrumandbass8700 I meant it towards op. because he said "the more I learn, the more I realize I don't know shit"
@@Indigo_Jams ahh makes sense. I hadn’t heard of the theory you stated and it sounded interesting so wanted to fully understand what you meant! Searched it up and it is definitely a phenomenon I have experienced a lot!
I would suggest the Retro Instruments 176 instead of a vintage 176, they sound amazing, and it would be new and reliable!
Thanks Colt for the video!!
Same here! I agree with your goats. SPL Iron was recommended to me by Howie Weinberg himself, he's got the hardware unit and swears by it, he said the plugin does a great job too. These days I'm focusing on learning TDR Molot. It's really an incredible compressor that can make your sounds THICK (and I don't have a lisp). Right now on sale for $10. Really a fantastic sounding compressor now that I'm understanding how to use it. It takes a bit to learn it properly.
The UA dbx 160 definitely has a cool character to it. 👍
SPL Iron is sick. One of the first things I used my PA loyalty voucher on. Also I’ve had fantastic results using your vocal settings for Pro-MB!
Love those Plugs... Still need to try few others you showed. Thx Colt, hope your feeling better and stinking to your new life style. George
Tone boosters compressor 4 might give your Fab filter compressor a run for it's money in terms of transparent compression. Especially the punch algorithm... And it's only 30 bucks
Loved this one, thanks!
Klanghelm MJUC MK2 setting is a 176 emulation FYI.
thats the best way to describe the DBX. "SPLAT!"
For those of you who don't have expensive plugins or hardware, i'm with you.
Lovely video Colt! Appreciate you brother, and hope you are doing well
Yeah I basically write and mix into the UAD SSL Bus Comp on its default setting. UAD distressor on vocals killer stuff
Be interesting for you to try the Softube Bus Processor plugin. It's surprised me numerous times. I really thought the Shadow Hills A would beat it but almost always loses to it.
that SPL Iron is like voodoo. welded onto my guitar bus first day i got it. magic.
Retro instruments makes a 176. Would love to see a video on it maybe?
I own one and its absolutely the best vocal and bass compressor I've ever used by a mile! Absolutely incredible! The Retro Powerstrip and 500 Pre are also my favorites in the studio! Try the Retro 176 Colt! Love your show as we have similar gear tastes and you'll definitely be blown away!
Any opinions on the Massenburg compressor plugin?
I've hovered over the 'Buy' button on that UA 176 many times but never pulled the trigger. The demons are back on my shoulder - whispering again - thanks to you. Lol !!!!
Wait for black friday
thanks for the video. very interesting , I also have SSL BUS +, and 6 different VST SSL simulations. The UAD version is the worst, very aggressive and terribly squeezing, highs, in my opinion one of the worst UAD plugins, right after Manely Variable Mu, which I also have the hardware version, if you want an almost exact recreation of the SSL Bus compressor try PSP BussPressor or OverLoud Com G, the UAD version doesn't even sit next to these Plugins, it's a completely different League... you can also try The Glue
Incredible video! SSL Native Bus Compressor 2 is a staple for me, since I can't afford The Bus+ 😑
Waves has a lot of good compressors but I feel there are better versions out there with other brands. However, one that's more unique to them is the R Vox. I use it anytime I want a vocal to be up front and in your face.
UTA Unfairchild 670M plugin is the Rolls for character, Toneprojects Unisum for transparancy. Very CPU heavy, but elite quality. PSP Flare for glue is 👌
2nd on the Unisom
I don't have an 1176 anywhere, what AM I doing with my life?!
You should at least pick up the Waves CLA-76. A favorite of mine. Gets you the blue and the black.
Analog Obsession Fetish is an awesome free 1176, often outlasting the need to buy a paid version.
@@PawFromTheBroons Analog Obsession has so many excellent tools. Just an amazing developer.
Totally! 😅 Try it on several stuff, even on the kick or the bass. It's amazing. I'd recommend the Arturia one.
You are wasting your life. Get one, put it on drums and bass!
In my humble opinion there should be definitely a mention of UAD's LA-2A Collection. I always find myself using them on a lot of instruments and also busses.
I use the Acustica Audio Erin and the Softube Blue Tone the most out of my compressor plugins
The UAD Silver and Grey LA2A are magical. Not a comp but also superb: The UAD Verve Analog Machines. The default preset is perfect on the mixbus. Try it!
Colt no bullshit you look healthier than you did a week or so ago. I know you changed up a few things in your diet. You look a bit more lively. You look like u might have lost a couple pounds also. Good for you brother.
Right now I as loving my Audioscape MK-609 first production serial number ending in 00. It blows away the current Neve 33609. Of course that is my opinion for what it is worth. hahah
Great video! Really enjoyed it! 🙌🏻Please make a similar video about EQ and Reverbs 🙏🏻
Thanks for stopping the atmos videos. This is the way. Let's go!
Oh, there’s plenty more in the works lol, but they will only take up maybe 20% of the videos moving forward
Do you like mixland rubber band and the new unfairchild plug-in?
Acustica Audio Erin, Tiger, El Rey, Sand, Green, Ultramarine! and Ivory.
SSL BUS+, Bluey 1176, UAD LA 610, Warm WA 2a.
I really love the music of your opening title : it's a track of one of your clients ?
Since you find that these compressors work well on a array of instruments (you've mentioned Vocals, piano, bass and drums for most of these) - do you ever find it overwhelming to pick one or know which one to use?
Analog vibes is about to do a pre-order on their 176 clone. It’s a complete kit build it with us.
I saw that! And it really has my attention!
@@ColtCapperrune same here. You convinced me to get the 260vu which is amazing. I use the 176 plugin alot. The pre order is in just a few days I think.
UAD API 2500 on drum bus. Nothing better. An UAD Distressor on everything, but that is kinda the same story as the 1176. If you don't know already, there's no hope for you...
What are your thoughts on the CL-1B?
DBX160 is on Spark.
Curious when you chose between the Iron or G-style comp for mix bus duties?
MSpectralDynamics for sidechain ducking & derez. Soothe is like a pretty but handicapped version of MSD.
Timestamps in 2024 would be nice!
What camera do u use to film these videos?
The snare bottom”….. No Diddy Lol
Hi what computer processor. are you running/ ram size etc. I am trying to build a decent spec Pc.
RE: 176, you tried the Retro 176, Colt? Sooo good on vocals. Can pin it and it doesn't get all pumpy or horrible.
What happened to slate plugins? I remember a time when they were the end all of analog sound, and now I rarely see anyone use them.
It seems like a lot of steam has come out of their marketing since Steven left. He was such an asset and born self-promoter. I agree that they are not as “hot” as they used to be, although their stuff is just as good as it ever was. Perception is everything.
I am an UAD 1176 junkie.
where is shadow hills on that list oO
your tip to use the 160 on snare bottom is worth so much for an obsessive drummer/producer/mixer like myself. Finding a new sound that inspires on live drums is like everything for me - 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻🔥🔥🔥
I've actually been using the UA 175 on parallel drum comp for years and it's so weighty sounding. Love it
i always start with a fast as possible release the gradually slow it until it feels expensive and juicy

Good.
The compressors I'm using...
SSL Bus Compressor 2 and G3
UAD Manley Variable Mu, Distressor, Fairchild
Pulsar Audio 1178, Smasher, Mu
Melda compressor for sidechain ducking various reverb and delay
Probably missing several...
