Hi my handsome nephew I was watching you drawing the bananas WOW I am so proud of you you are such a wonderful teacher with lots of patience I love that.
Mr. Dunn, you are the best teacher, even better than those clowns who claim to have great workshops and then one pays for them, spends hours of useless crap just to realize that you have learned nothing. 10 minutes with your tutorial and I can see the difference how much one can progress!! Thank you!!! 🙏🙏
When I saw/heard what you were drawing I thought, "How in the world is he going to pull this off?" And you did, and did so brilliantly! I'm learning so much from you. Thanks Alphonso!
Just purchased a copy of your book! I'm not really a big pen and ink drawer, but you're such an amazing teacher that I'm sure I'll get some valuable lessons from it--and who knows, maybe you'll inspire me to do more ink drawings! Besides, I just wanna show some love and support you!! You 100% deserve all this success!!! :)
Thanks bro I was really confused how to distinguish things in between this video helped alot.Iam expecting when I start inking again i Will surely start to get the diffrences
thank you very much for this video I am five months on my drawing journey and do alot of women with head wraps I know there missing exactly what you have done here brilliant video 😊
Hiya mate. I've really enjoyed your videos, but there is one subject concerning pen and ink that I have problems with and have yet to find a satisfying solution for. I have been playing around with a composition and thought an octopus would compliment it, so I started my Octo studies lol. Transitionsing between values are easier with pencil, but pen and ink messes me up. The "head" of a realistic octopus is very smooth, but bulbous. It has texture, leather like to look at, with creases and wrinkles but silky smooth to touch. On this surface there are deep crevases and high plateaus. My problem is the consistent texture and value of the spaces between the deep shadow and the highlight. To clarify, the transition from a low, solid black divot to a high, solid white highlight hilltop, back to a low, solid black divot. (keeping in mind that this is not linear, but each low spot is surrounded 360 by high spots and vice versa. ) It's the area between the lows and highs, the consistant colour and texture not effected by shadow or light that is confusing me. I can't seem to render it convincingly with ink. do you have any insight that could help me past this problem?
You probably never gonna see this comment, but I just wanna thank you for sharing your knowledge it helped me a lot in my journey in art. I'm currently studying architecture(although I wanna be a comic/manga or concept artist) and your lessons are really really wonderful I learned more from you than my professors. Thank you :3
This is very helpful, thanks! I would love to see a pen & ink rendering of a few children's faces, just to get the softness of that kid look but with the use of ink instead of pencil smoothing. Thanks so much. Just found your tutorials and love them!
Got your book a few weeks ago and I am loving it. I spent about 5 hours last Sunday drawing textures and I can definitely see an improvement. Although I still have the stupid habit of feeling "put off" down when I make mistakes (even though I am taking on pen drawing to overcome this). Regardless, you're by far my favorite artist/tutor on UA-cam and count me in for buying your next book! One question I have, though is if the order of the videos in the "Basic Drawing Elements & Principles" is up to date?
Hola, me llamo Fran. Me encanta tu canal. Hi, my name is Fran. I love your channel. Thanks for your tutorials, thanks to you I'm starting to draw again, I had not drawn for years. I bought your book in amazon, I will arrive on April 20, I am looking forward to have it; I hope you follow with many more tutorials, could you upload one with the different techniques of strokes and textures? I am having difficulties in it. Thank you and greetings from Spain.
Thanks for this video. Great exercise. Were you using different nib sizes on your different scarves? I did notice the thicker, (graphic?) nib on the last scarf, but wondering if you changed up nib sizes of the other 3? The line width appears thinner and I'm wondering if you were able to do that with the line spacing, the actual nib size or maybe it's just a trick of the eye because of the lighter looking fabric.... Or possibly all 3...Anyway, thanks again, very nicely done.
Brilliant...! Quick question's, been learning from your channel for a while now, and 1.) wonder how you're able to maintain your lines so parallel / straight? 2.) Lastly, do you encourage drawing something everyday, perhaps journaling? Thanks in advance....
I cannot thank you enough for your videos and teachings. I am waiting for your next book! If I can only give you an advice, I would improve the camera quality, adding more light and setting color balance, so that the paper actually looks white. The videos appear underexposed to me, and with the correct lighting they will be the best, most professional drawing lessons on UA-cam :-)
Hi Alphonsodunn This is what I get really confused with: using crosshatch ingredients to indicate light and shadow AND the actual COLOUR of the object at the same time . As with your bananas. I struggle to show that there is something light and dark as well as being in light or shade. aarrgghh! 😉
You help me a lot!! Thank you soo much Alphonso!! I must say I would never find better professor, thanks to your teaching method and I'm saving money to buy your book! :D Keep doing the awesome work you do to us!!
Hi Alphonso, thank you for your videos, always instructional and fun to watch. I have a question: I tried to use white ink like you did at the end of the video but when it dries out the white turns into a bluish hue. I tried everything, gouache, pencils, even scratch the paper to have those solid white lines but I'm not satisfied. Can you please tell me if that happens to you too or if it doesn't, would you be so kind to tell me what kind of pen you use? By the way, I've been using Uni-ball Signo gel pens among others. Thanks a lot for your time!
hmm.. It could be a mix of both inks that causes that bluish hue. That doesnt really happen with me but it isnt easy to find a really opaque white ink that also makes fine lines. I used pigma microns and white ink gelly roll pen in this drawing
Maybe the problem is actually the black ink you are using. I have a few pens with varying surface area from different companies (0.1, 0.5, 0.05, etc) and I've noticed the same problem you described only with a few of them. I use a Signo white gel pen (the only one I could find that ships to my country). I really think it is the ink. I will test it with a very strong ink I bought and I believe it won't suffer as much. I assume my experience is enough of a proof to this point though I have not looked at information about the subject. I hope this helps somewhat :]
It might be the ink, like you say. However I tried a lot of pens with no luck, as soon as it dries it turns blueish. At this point I think I'll try and use white paint with a crow quill pen. Thanks for the info man, appreciate it!
Do you have videos you don't fast forward through the shading phase? To be honest we lose a lot of information like the patience we will need, how it will look at each stage (and time to internalise that) etc. Non-sped up cooking videos were a revelation for me, I hope to have something similar for pen and ink. I would appreciate to be able to see the process in real time.
Alphonso Dunn Really? That's awesome! I'm looking forward to it. I've started to get a better grasp after watching more videos and practicing everyday, but those will be really helpful. One of the main things still plaguing me is making effective use of different line widths in evoking details. I get the feeling you switch more often than I realise.
I find that drawing cloth is really reall hard, especially on organic shapes like the human body. I don't understand it at all but that's another subject for a different day. The problem I have, relating to the topic of the video, is making light strokes. I also have a Pigma Micron 0.05 pen and I can't for the life of me make light strokes. It is always either the normal width or no ink at all or of course *much heavier* if I press a little harder. *Any tips on what I can do to achieve making those lines?* I tried just practicing for a few hours but it amounted to nothing. It's like there is a void in the pressure meter I can put on the pen which doesn't appear to exist in your drawing. Great video as always :]
I'm no expert but I'd suspect that there is either something wrong with your pen, your grip, or just a few hours of practice isn't enough. Practice it every day for a couple of weeks/months, then even if your pen was the problem, you'd have still gained experience and developed your muscle memory.
Hi my handsome nephew I was watching you drawing the bananas WOW I am so proud of you you are such a wonderful teacher with lots of patience I love that.
Your comment is so wholesome! I hope you and your nephew are doing great 6 years after this video 😂
😢❤😭
Wait somethin wrong here💀

I love Pen and Ink technique. But what are the professional uses for Pen and Ink nowadays?
Great video as usual dude thank you :) And just out of interest, what are your thoughts on digital drawing/painting?
What paper do you use? Just mix media or a special kind for pen and ink? Great tips on shading, thanks so much for the video!
multi-media, drawing paper, bristol, and hotpress watercolor paper most
Thank you for helping me. I was really waiting for a shading video :'(. Please do more. My problem is I really don't know where to put the shading
Yea shading can be tricky
Alphonso Dunn thanks for the help . i will still watch your videos
How do you determine when to switch the directions when doing this ?
Amazing!
: )
Do you have video on how to shade fabric? It really killing me when shading it.
Very helpful...thank you!

perhaps do them separately at first. First just focus on light and shadow then distinguishing color or vice versa. Then combine
Thank you. You're great.
What tools do you use
You help me a lot!! Thank you soo much Alphonso!!

Maybe this article can help a little bit as well
what type of pen are you using
Is this a problem if I have thicker liner? Because I can't make that thin lines

SiMe Get smaller versions of that pen. They'll go as small as 0.02 at least and it's so much easier to do shadowing with the smaller pens.
Is there any chance for digital version of the book ? It's difficult to get the paperback copy in my country.
I hope to become like you ..❤ماشاء الله
I am very sure you can
Alphonso Dunn 😌❤
This guy teaches better than my arts teacher
white pen name please
Sakura gelly roll
Alphonso Dunn oke thanks dude, your tutorial so much help for me
When are we going to see some of that new book, boss? Can't wait :D
My teacher played one of your videos in class. Can you sue her.
