Christopher Walken is more known for comedy these days, and people doing funny impressions of him, not quite remembering what a phenomenal dramatic actor he was back in the day.
" Any of you that are tired of getting RIPPED Off by that HUMP ( interject gun shots ) Come to the Continental try some Champagna ? I GOT WORK FOR ALL OF YA "
You know this is my unpopular opinion I prefer his earlier roles from the seventies and eighties than his usual gangster Pulp Fiction archetypes he usually plays now.
This was probably the scene that sealed the Oscar for him - although he was brilliant throughout. He showed an amazing range of emotions - fun-loving buddy, serious deer hunter, loving boyfriend and sad, sad psychologically damaged soldier.
Three years ago I became a REALLY BIG fan of Chris Walken. The 1st movie that pushed my buttons was THE DEAD ZONE. Then I bought THE DEER HUNTER and saw it for the first time (uncut) ALL the way through without commercial interruption. What an eye-opening experience. Walken was SUPERB in that movie. No wonder he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The three scenes where Walken shines supreme are the POW scene, the hospital, and the Russian Roulette finale. What ACTING! And he can dance 2!
quoththeraven956.... First time I ever saw him was in a 70s heist film with Sean Connery called 'The Anderson Tapes'. It was such a nondescript role I almost missed him.
I feel the same way..i watched it once the whole way through, but cant bring myself to watch it all the way again..only select bits and pieces. Too painful...
He said on "Inside the actors Studio" That he used sense-memory in this scene in which he recalled summer camp. In his words "I thought I was never coming home"
Besides the fact he is one of my favourite actors (and this indeed being one of his best performances), I forgot how gorgeous he was back then. One of the most heartbreaking moments in the movie.
Being asked to recite my parents dates of birth in that situation, after what he'd been through, would have been the last straw with me too... That's a wrap folkes....
This scene makes me cry every time. Must of been what my uncle went thru. Not too long after Vietnam he took his own life. RIP Uncle Ed......I’ll see u again.
This movie is so real but depressing. It hits you right on the heart mainly cuz of Walkens performance as Nick. All the acting in this movie is incredible it seems so real
I'm a veteran and the way Nick (Christopher Walken) has a breakdown while questioned by the doctor is how I react before they draw blood from me at the VA.
The Deer Hunter will beat you up and put you in a place you have never been before. It's that powerful. What a great movie. Would like to see it on the big screen again.
Great post man..your exactly right. i saw it for the 1st and only time a few years after it came out...not in the theater, but on cable or something. It only takes a small snip it like this for the WHOLE movie and emotions to come flooding back again. To this day i can only watch certain small segments...and never the ending..probably the most powerful movie i have ever seen. I actually thought about joining the Army after high school in '82, but after seeing this, i changed my mind!!!!! Went to college instead and took a desk job!!!! Lol
I'm pretty sure life isn't impossible, I'm living proof. If you mean the movie can be interpreted as a nihilistic allegory for the meaningless of life then maybe......
This is the movie where the phrase, "Fuckin A" comes from...people who say it now, probably dont realize that.....I was 14 when this came out and couldnt get in to see it back then, due to age restrictions. Older guys on the football team in HS started quoting it and talking about how great it was. I finally got to see it a few years later, probably around '81 or early '82 on cable or something...i remember watching it with my dad a vet and we were both yelling and cursing at the TV during the 1st Russian Roulette scene in the jungle...probably the most intense scene in cinema history...anyways...but wow, how this film changed my mine about going into the Army after high school, QUICK!!!!
If I was in Vietnam i would have probably died from doing so much heroin. And its the good stuff there. I wouldnt be able to deal with all that sober. Studies show most heroin users in nam camr back hime and were clean once they left that environment. Everyone was afraid all these veterans were going to come back as junkies but most cleaned up
What an amazing film. Best film I've ever seen. This scene was amazing. The russian roulete scene was so intense. And the end part where he killed himself thinking ''one shot''. I cried at that part :(
Great actor, better than even De Niro,I always thought when he looked serious when he was young he looked a bit like an alien,he got better with age, when you get to around 27 you put more weight on,he suited it.Thanks for the upload 12 years later, time g lies aye..
I think this movie just wanted to show you what a war can do to people no matter what race or nationality they are. It ended up killing Nick in the end.
REALITIES HMMMM. OUR MIND/BRAIN CONSISTS OF A TRILLION REALITIES ;OR MORE. BEING CONDEMNED MAKES WAR IMPOSSIBLE TO MENTALLY SURVIVE THE HORRORS OF WAR.
Now Veterans Hospitals have all the staff trained in P.T.S.D. That hopefully wouldn't happen now. HOPEFULLY, WE WON'T HAVE ANOTHER WAR?!? Einstein said: "I don't know how WWIII will be fought?" "But, I know how WWIV will be fought, with sticks, & stones."
I kinda get this way when the lady asks if I’d like to make it a “meal” when I order the Big Mac at McDonald’s. It’s the streets, man, the streets! There are Vietnamese on the streets.
When someone asks nonchalant questions about your family after you narrowly escaped with your life. All the while, you we're not thinking about anything except, staying alive. He probably hears is the gun hammer click Everytime.
Actually, this scene isn't as great as everyone thinks. Yes, Chris Walken's acting is brilliant. However, no patient would be questioned by a doctor while teetering on a building's balcony edge. Also, when distraught over the question about his parents, no distraught person would maintain his "cross legged pose". Poor directing, all around, in this scene.
Christopher Walken is more known for comedy these days, and people doing funny impressions of him, not quite remembering what a phenomenal dramatic actor he was back in the day.
It seems that when actors reach the age of 'old', they tend to become a caricature of themselves.
He’s amazing

Well-deserved Oscar win - Christopher Walken gives a terrific performance throughout the whole movie.
I'm a grown man and I still cried like a baby at this scene. Your heart can't help but break along with his. What a performance.
ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES I HAVE EVER SEEN!!I STILL CRY WHEN CHRIS DOES- AMAZING ACTOR
I saw this movie yesterday. I think this must be one of the greatest movies I have ever seen about the war in Vietnam. I sat up to 06.00 and cried.

Only walken can win an oscar for three stifled squeaks. the man's got talent.
Oh god :-(
I remember leaving the theatre crying that day.
Walken deserved his oscar, he delivered the best role of his career.
there's just too many scenes in this movie that are too painful and real to want to watch again. that's why it is such a masterpiece
I feel the same way..i watched it once the whole way through, but cant bring myself to watch it all the way again..only select bits and pieces. Too painful...

He was so beautiful.
Yes Christopher was very beautiful and he doesn't even look like he' s 35 in the Deer hunter, he looks 10 years younger.
Besides the fact he is one of my favourite actors (and this indeed being one of his best performances), I forgot how gorgeous he was back then. One of the most heartbreaking moments in the movie.

best acting from chris ever
I suffer ptsd after an attack and it halted my world. I empathise completely with this scene, beautiful.
Me too.
I am sorry for your PTSD - I have it too
See Pete Walker’s work on C-PTSD.
PLEASE do not give up.
There is a light.

I'm glad I was too young for Vietnam. I would have been there with the rest of those poor souls who went there.

I love this scene and the one where he's with Robert DeNiro in the trailer talking about "The trees"
💔💔
Brilliant actor, also DeNiro, as well. My favorite scene of the movie is when Walken dies because his acting on that point was incredible!!!
The Deer Hunter will beat you up and put you in a place you have never been before. It's that powerful. What a great movie. Would like to see it on the big screen again.

1:23 is the saddest and most disturbing shot of the entire movie. That man's life is fucking ruined.
0:20-Does'nt matter which conflict we butt our nose into;war is such a waste of life.
This is the scene that helped him win the Academy Award.
Sean Pultz brilliant wasn’t it
the first time I saw this movie I cried .this is the best movie ever!!
Suddenly my eyes got very watery.
This movie really can be interpreted as just being an allegory for the impossibility of life.
at those times

This is thè scene when he got the nomination.
Brilliant work.
you cant even tell he's acting
The doctor in this scene was a frightening true representation of your average army doctor during that war.
Damn, that game of Russian roulette in the bush really screwed him up...
"It's his."
Christopher Walken is a great actor
walken is a genious
This scene makes me cry 💯
It's a shame that the great man gets stereotyped as a playing badass gangsters. He can do so much more, as this clip shows.
I can't watch this movie again. Too intense.
Good acting here. Makes you feel so sad for him.

Tho this is a movie, Fkg remfs had no idea, great portrayal Christopher. We all have a dark part in our souls 🇨🇦 70 + expat
Am I the only one who thought for a tenth of a second at 0:24 that he was going to use a smartphone ??
hahahaha. I thought the same thing for a quick second.
I know what you mean. It looks like he's doing that! Even before you see it's a wallet, it kind of looks like a smart phone case.
uh NO
"Lemme just Google my lastname real quick."
I absolutely did when I saw it lol
Any war is stupid.
But Michael did come back to get him. Rather wish he would have said in Nick's final scene something about making that promise on the court
Christopher Walken is very affecting in this scene, in the entire film...and very hot as well.

happened to me once when i forgot my parents bdays.
I thought Chris Walken was for real off his rocker when I saw this movie way back when.
I want to take care of him.
War is Hell.
I think this movie just wanted to show you what a war can do to people no matter what race or nationality they are. It ended up killing Nick in the end.

why one needs to think twice before enlisting. most end up like this, if theyre lucky.

The horrors of war...we need leaders that would do anything to avoid it. Talk...reach an agreement.
Instead we have "leaders" who create war in order to generate coin.
True side of the war,no guns no nothing..Who seened war (unfortunetly) sawed this scenes very often...
Why would seeing a childhood photo of himself make him go to the bathroom?

fuck you, you heartless fuck
Ummm I think she really means what she wrote. What’s the matter with you????
Christopher broke down to become an actor... before this take, in real time... Ask him if I speak the truth...

For reasons like this, I will never consider women true equals, until they have to register for the draft and fight in combat like men do also.
