At 7mins, 30 seconds, you mention the mattress on the train. This was an ambulance coach for carrying sick or disabled pilgrims on their journey to Knock on Summer Sundays. These people would have been carried on stretchers to the road ambulances that you showed moments earlier.
The first of these railwaymen (Fred), transferred from County Meath, because both stations were on the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR), which in 1925 became part of the Great Southern Railways, then CIE in 1945, finally Irish Rail (Iarnrod Eireann) in 1987.
Marvellous memories, great to have these films and thank you for putting the video up for us all to see.

My hometown, born there 1969. What a fabulous and well put together video. Wonderful story and fair play to you for purchasing the house and keeping it in the family. The film footage had my head in a spin! Good luck to you and your family.

Excellent narration and production quality. I attended secondary school (1969 - 1974) in the building shown on the upper left at 0:30 in your video. I often heard the name Son Conlon, but I can't recall meeting him. I am sure you will continue to enjoy your visits to Claremorris as it is a nice town with a good community spirit.

Those home movie clips are priceless, the letter from the hospital is very sad , children having to leave their home to emigrate is very sad , however it's wonderful that the Pickings kept in touch and eventually took vacations in Claremorris.
I know some people in the town of Claremorris and I'm sure you will be very welcome by the community. It's a wonderful story and will have many more chapters. Best wishes 👏👏👏☘️

My mother played cards with Maureen for years. I used to drop her to the house for a lift to the card game as she didn't drive. I remember Son but I didn't really know him. Looking at some of the old video of Claremorris is interesting. I recognise some of the buildings and some must have been gone before I grew up.
