Tupac was 21 when he recorded this. It was also in 1992, which is almost a completely different universe to where we are now. I’d probably roll my eyes at a lot of his music if it were released today, but at the time, for being so young, he was kind of a really important voice. He was pro black without being anti white, he saw where there was injustice and he encouraged accountability and self improvement. I don’t know if there’s anyone like him today or has ever been anyone like him since. Crazy he didn’t make it past 25.

I’m not sure what the percentage was in the 70s-90s, at the hight of the crack era, but I’m pretty sure it was WELL below 50%. That means that a vast majority of black people back then grew up in single-parent homes, mostly without the father. In that context, 2Pac’s comments about getting game from a woman make perfect sense, although it has other meanings, as well. I think it means something along the lines of, we learn what women like from women, themselves. The whole part about needing man, also, is being addressed, again, to women in that era, who stick with abusive men just because they think they need them for support (money). Context is important, here.

I think what Pac was trying to show in the last verse where he says " while the rich kids are driving Benz, I am trying to hold on and survive with friends". Is, the difference between classes of people (the hood versus the Burbs/white neighborhoods) rich vs poor, and the disproportionate distribution of wealth and opportunity among those people. He is not saying everyone should have a Benz, but everyone should be given equal opportunity to have one. Maybe his thought patterns were a bit idealistic, still, I agree on equal opportunity for all instead of just trying to survive while others are able to live it up.

As for Brad mentioning it, his entire function as a reactor is to "react" & provide commentary. As Lex mentions here in this comment stream, Brad himself was raised by a single parent... so I think that he is qualified to speak on the subject based upon his own experiences. That being said, he never said that having a single parent is "bad", so perhaps some people's sensitivity on the subject is informing their own interpretation of what he said.

I remember the day Pac passed. I was 20 and a single mom. I thought he was talking straight to me…a white woman. It was different to live within the lyrics during that time. It’s strange that separation in the Midwest in the 1990’s was so much less than now. We evolve to digress.
If I’m not mistaken, this is the first time in recorded history that black american households are growing up with both parents (I think its up to 70% of black american households). I’m not sure what the percentage was in the 70s-90s, at the hight of the crack era, but I’m pretty sure it was WELL below 50%. That means that a vast majority of black people back then grew up in single-parent homes, mostly without the father. In that context, 2Pac’s comments about getting game from a woman make perfect sense, although it has other meanings, as well. I think it means something along the lines of, we learn what women like from women, themselves.
The whole part about needing man, also, is being addressed, again, to women in that era, who stick with abusive men just because they think they need them for support (money). Context is important, here.

I think what Pac was trying to show in the last verse where he says " while the rich kids are driving Benz, I am trying to hold on and survive with friends". Is, the difference between classes of people (the hood versus the Burbs/white neighborhoods) rich vs poor, and the disproportionate distribution of wealth and opportunity among those people. He is not saying everyone should have a Benz, but everyone should be given equal opportunity to have one. Maybe his thought patterns were a bit idealistic, still, I agree on equal opportunity for all instead of just trying to survive while others are able to live it up.

well I can tell you from experience, growing up in the country my mom raised 5 boys on her own..and if we got out of line, it'd be a belt or switch waiting for us..and don't let grandma have to whoop you because she going to the peach tree to get her switches and plat them together...most city folks don't get whooped, so their bad friends tend to be their influences..for us those belts and switches were our influence
