Little nuggets of mystic wisdom hidden amongst otherwise ordinary pieces of entertainment is what I love about this channel, ASX is great at curating writing that feeds the mind. From the surprising philosophical nature of how one tracks down the origin of the straw hat to psychedelic plant elf communication, its all fantastic!

Thank you! I have been listening to the dune audiobook when I sleep but I think your voice is the best at lulling me to sleep. I just wish it went on for longer!

Thanks for sharing this. It has helped me formulate and ferment many ideas behind my own writing. Amazing to hear these abstract thought processes made tangible by a master like Herbert. The linguistic strategies and philosophical insights at play are downright genius.

Are there any specific references to Dune in a Song of Ice and Fire?

I can not stand Frank Herbert. I got to the 5th book before I couldn't take his politics and more and stopped reading. The books, especially the 4th and 5th, are like a manifesto against liberalism. I agree with his stance on environmentalism, but everything else in his books is gross. His books are a clear libertarian manifesto. He says it outright when Paul Atreides the second opines that it isn't fair that "only liberals are called great thinkers." Frank Herbert called communism the "sinister embodiment of everything evil" and supported McCarthy, worked on 4 republican campaigns, and worked directly for one of the most hardline conservative senators at the time Guy Cordon. Frank herbert is a fascist, and his books are his manifesto. I wish I had stopped reading after the first book, which I genuinely enjoyed, and while allegorical was his least political outside environmentalism and respecting native people. Do yourself a favor and stop reading after the first one. Not because of the quality of his writing or the story declines, but because his politics become more literal and less allegorical, which taints the series altogether.

Your analysis of his politics are just... not true. He hated all organized government since it inevitably attracts corruption. But when you criticize everyone, it's understandable that people passionate in one extreme will claim you're the evil embodiment of the other extreme 😓

@@IbbyMelbourne You've got no Idea what you're talking about lol. First, re-read my comment. I called him libertarian, which is anti-government, so you agree with me. Second, he literally worked for Guy Cordon and supported McCarthy. He is the definition of a right-wing libertarian. Get educated and try again lol.

@@Inazarab from the Wikipidia entry: "He was a distant relative of the Republican senator Joseph McCarthy, ... he was appalled to learn of McCarthy's blacklisting of suspected communists from working in certain careers and believed that he was endangering essential freedoms of citizens of the United States."
He's also made comments about how Nixon was the United States best president while Kennedy was the worst. For a very reactionary liberal person that sounds like he's Republican, but when you Actually do the research, he's saying that because Nixon did Watergate, which was the 1st time the people really saw how corrupt their politicians were, while Kennedy was too charismatic.
You seem like the kind of person who just thinks they're right though so I don't know what good telling you the truth will do

Would you by that logic also recommend to shun the Quran, since it's written by an even more diabolical, rabid freedom hating ''prophet'' who mixed politics with what he stole from other religions?
