Why Can’t NATO Give Ukraine F-15 Or F-16 Fighter Jets?

  • The F-16 was originally designed to be a lightweight air superiority fighter that has since demonstrated a great deal of value as a multi-role aircraft. The F-15 comes with an even more impressive reputation, and in fact, the Eagle is the most dominant air superiority fighter of its era and probably others. There is no other fighter in the sky with the proven dogfighting capabilities of the F-15, which has a documented combat record of 104 air victories and zero losses.

These are mostly just reasons why we should get started on training personnel right now. Ukraine was actually considering a purchase of F-16 a couple of years ago, but could not afford it. They will have to transition to Nato weapons eventually, even for fighter jets, so why not just get started?

It could be a shortage of manpower, I mean, one thing is train a Mig-29 or Su-27 pilot in the F-15 or F-16 platform, I mean they already have experience as pilots, and the other is training a future pilot from the ground up

The bottom line is this: we have hundreds of F-15Cs that are almost worn out. They are nearing the end of their service lives. That's why the USAF decided to build the F-15EX. It is intended to replace those old F-15Cs. So I say if the Ukrainians think they can transition in 2 weeks, give them the old fighters and let them prove it. To what better use could these aging airframes be put in the last hours of their lives than to defend a fledgling democracy being attacked by a fascist aggressor? I don't believe we can't get spare parts into Ukraine, and I don't believe there are no Americans who would volunteer to go into Ukraine and help them take a crash course on F-15 maintenance. Also, the F-15C has very limited capability in the ground attack role. It's almost purely for use as an air DEFENSE weapon. I wish we would give Ukraine significant quantities of real assets.

Several Ukrainian pilots have reportedly been training on the F-16 and F-15 for several weeks. Today it was reported that the US is to deliver 1 squadron of old used F-16s as part of a $40 billion military aid package. It should be either aircrafts used by European countries, which are now switching to the F-35 etc., or they will be preserved aircrafts from American warehouses. This would possibly be the F-16AM or C/D versions. For the European version, these are end-of-life aircraft. This delivery could take place already at the turn of November and December. But it is not clear to me how it would be with the airport staff, because it is probably impossible to prepare them in such a short time.
I think it's a matter of time here, so that together with the air defense (NASAMs and IRIS-T) aircraft will also be delivered, even if in the first phase they will not be the most modern ones. But they will be given as a gift. In the future, Ukraine can then choose for itself whether to buy American aircrafts or Eurofighters, Rafaels or Gripens. In addition to American aircraft, Ukraine should receive 12 MiG-29SDs from Slovakia in September, which have minor upgrades to NATO standards.

Ukraine need F-16 because they can detect enemies in the same time when enemy detects F-16 (or even before that). These days, Ukrainian pilots can't even see enemies, while russian pilots are attacking them. So Ukrainian pilots use a lot of tactics and work with air defense forces.
Air defense systems are cost-effective and that's why Ukraine is getting NASAMS.
Ukraine says that it will rearm to F-16 in near future and there is no other options. So they want to train pilots now (there are a lot of free personnel).
Author says that russians have S-400 with range of hundreds of miles and this will force destroying them on russian territory. But there is one small thing. Every air defense system can't detect low flying targets in huge ranges. For example, S-300 can detect cruise missile in 17 km (10.5 ml). Moreover, planes can fly a lot lower than cruise missile (I've seen a lot of low passes when plane barely not touching chimney of your house).

it takes average of 5~8 years for a country to adopt and fully deploy a program. A program can be jets, tanks, ship etc. It take an average of 40~50 personal to run a single jet (yes, pilot/crew + maintenance + fuel + loaders + logistics + control + training etc etc). Each nation has different structure within military which is unique to its own - and companies like Boeing / LM has full consultation teams that works with the buyers years before the jets arrive. Simply having pilot and maintenance crew is very minimal of short term operation requirement - and its just not feasible unless NATO is directly involved. In case of Ukraine, it is difficult to expect Ukraine can adopt any western jets in a short term - but given the circumstances they may have to pull something off.

Since Ukraine is fending future intruder on behalf of Bulgaria and Slovakia, the latter two should help with Ukraine's efforts. If each nation in nato gave 10 Eurofighter Typhoon they would at least get 320 since Finland and Sweden joined nato. Countries are already giving them couple billions on aid and couple military vehicles. If would only be costing nato allies couple billions. This will boost there airforce while getting them to buy more western goods that would benefit the west. If nato gave them 10 if these jets every month. This means they would have more jets then Russia making it a costly war for Russia or once a year. They would still be getting 640 of these fighters. Answers POINT to POINT as the video progresses.
F-15 and F-16 pilots from Ukraine could be trained in a matter of weeks! 4 to 6 weeks courses it's on the safe side to be considered a complete program, with enough training instructors and flight time. This means just OVER A MONTH.
Operating maintenance would be no problem: you LEASE the package from a foreign country. Already formed personnel including ARMY retiree would be ready to be part of such a service team while you form long term Ukrainian servicemen.
F-15/F-16 don't need to fly to Russia to be effective. Try pitting one of these ridiculous soviet era bombers against one of these dogfighting champions and you quickly find out what a Russian fireworks show in the sky really is. Now they fly unchallenged, out of UA's air defense range and launch ground attacks.
And yes, UA should address S-400 installations in Russia like WE SHOULD HAVE addressed anything flying over Ukraine at least 150 to 200 Km from the border with EU. Our IRRESPONSIBILE drowsy leaders are leaving us COMPLETELY EXPOSED to Russian threats because there is NOT even enough time to launch an interceptor if you let anything offensive fly within such a close range.
With a closed air-space this war would not have taken place. If the President of the US didn't pull from Afghanistan in such a catastrophic way... if he would not have said: we won't intervene with troops in the conflict. Basically this is the DIRECT RESULT of a very WEAK and inconsistent American leader. US electors should really question themselves who they voted for and if the price of their choice is worth an abortion ban win because after having seen the economy mangled, personal freedom restricted, now they even face heavy price inflation and still are threatened by Russia to be their next target.
Again, not necessarily F-15 and F-16 need to fly into Russia: I am thinking of all the deadly attacks coming from the sea, from submarines, ships and bombers. Anyway the WORST western dead giveaway of the INCOHERENCY of our security policy is the fear that we might offend Russia. Russia is the OFFENDER and MUST BE REGULATED duly for us to be respected in the future. Do we want the war to be expanded in Poland and beyond or do we want it to STOP in Ukraine?
Thus if sending technically superior aircrafts isn't enough to put the Ukrainians on an even foot why have they been given Himars and M270? Is the west really planting weapons in Ukraine to let the world know: look, we've done what we could but they weren't good enough for our weapons. Basically we're siding with the Russians. Take note: EU provided around 1Bn EUR to Ukraine while in the same time period paid about 50Bn EUR for Russian gas and oil (ratio 50 to 1 for Putin). Conclusion: The EU is the main income for the foolish Russian dictator's quest.
Sean Penn who isn't the first to see the light of this world has since called for Billionaires to bet into Ukraine, providing them fighter jets. When people like him launch such ideas they've been usually consulted with field experts that confirmed such possibility and suggested the numbers to publish. It's not a remote possibility, but there is a strong POLITICAL WILL against providing American made jets to Ukraine. As F-15/F-16 operators include Venezuela, Pakistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia... states with much more questionable past than Ukraine. And guess what... the Italian Air Force LEASED F-16 from the USAF! This means they carried the Italian Air Force emblem even if they did not belong to them... brilliant isn't it? Something they said it CANNOT be done has been done already.
Now... let's carry on with this sad spectacle. The west must be really proud of themselves for what is happening in Ukraine.

Currently Ukraine doesn't have enough aircraft to control it's airspace even if your assumptions about the comparability of 4th generation aircraft are true having these systems would greatly benefit Ukraine. The real problem with integrating F-16s into the Ukrainian Air Force is that their logistical ecosystem is built around Soviet weapon systems and not compatible with this airframe. Assuming that the logistical problems could be overcome the next issue would be that the F-16 is not designed with rugged landing gear to operate from rough or improvised landing surfaces that Ukraine may have to use (i.e. straight sections of highway which may be damaged).
Other western airframes such as the JAS-39 or the F/A-18 were designed with provisions for low take off and landing speeds as well as hard landings and would better meet the needs of the Ukrainian Air Force.
Ultimately the most practical way to support the Ukrainian Air Force is to provide them Soviet aircraft currently operated by NATO countries.

Your claim is stupid. Often these military scenarios are given external factors to the engagement, usually tying the superior jet to some kind of disadvantage. The Truth is the F-22 and, more so the F-35, are rarely going to engage another fighter jet in a dogfight. They are simply built according to another superior doctrine of engagement.
As an example, MiG-21s can be a superior dogfighting platform to the F-14, however, in the Iran-Iraq war, pilots weren't engaging in dogfights with the MiG-21. They were downing dozens of MiGs with their AiM-54 missiles without the MiG even noticing that the F-14 was there. This became such a problem for the Iraqi Air Force that they grounded the entire fleet due to thinking it was a technical problem that made the planes explode in mid-air.
The point is, that war changes, and the American fighters are designed around changing doctrines, not basic Early Cold War/WW2 dogfighting.
