🇲🇽 TORREÓN, COAHUILA | SHOCKINGLY Good GORDITAS in The Industrial BACKBONE of MEXICO | Travel Mexico

  • 🇲🇽 TORREÓN, MEXICO - Welcome back to Torreón, Coahuila, one of my favourite cities in Mexico! This is Part 25 of my 2022 Mexico Travel series! This video is all about the industrial and ‘normal’ side of Mexico no one else shows you. Torreón Is the backbone of Mexican industry - many products you consume in Mexico originate here, such as Lala milk, as well as big brands like the supermarket, Soriana.
    Torreón can often be seen as just another regular, industrial city without the history of central and southern Mexico. Yes, it’s a younger city, but that doesn't mean it doesn’t have interesting history or decent food. In fact, the comida Mexicana (Mexican food) I’ve had here is the BEST I’ve had in Mexico (I’m not even joking!), including the shockingly good GORDITAS featured in this video (amazing street food and possibly the best!)! We also go to Bosque Urbano!
    I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in Northern Mexico, previously filming 2 videos in Torreón in 2021, in addition to Durango, Nombre de Dios, Puente de Ojuela, Matamoros, Gómez Palacio and Lerdo. An INCREDIBLE area of Mexico with just as much to offer as the colonial south. And very different!
    If you’re thinking of becoming expats in Mexico or moving to Mexico, you don’t have to move to San Miguel de Allende or Guanajuato or listen to the outdated ‘is Mexico safe’ rhetoric. Somewhere like Torreón may not be traditionally ‘pretty’, but it still has a tremendous amount to offer!

    This side of Torreón looked good to me. Neighborhoods that are lived or worked in - and clean - aside from occasional abandoned buildings, graffiti and problematic alleys. A torrid day but not a torrid time or place. Thanks for showing it! And even via UA-cam, the air-conditioning felt wonderful.

      Gracias Oscar! From a local that means a lot! I know that Laguneros are far more up front and straight to the point. I think anyone I know from Torreón would know what the point of this video is, whereas some in Mexico could see it negatively and just not get it.

    Hi David, about the tennis shoes on the wires,... there's an old saying when people die that goes "él o ella ya colgó los tenis" which translates to "he or she already hung their tennis" and this is also because it is believed that when, for example, you are hit by a car or let's say you jump off a building, the first thing that comes off of your body are your shoes. This is also supported with the belief that when your are born, you soul comes in through your nose with your first breath, and when you die, your soul leaves your body from your feet.
    So the thing about hanging shoes on the wires, sometimes it's like a representation that someone, specially a loved one from that street, died and they honour them by hanging their shoes on the wires. It is not limited to criminals or gangsters.
    Greetings from Hermosillo, Sonora.

    I’m from the North of Mexico, and it is true, we don’t get many tourists there. It is as Mexican as it can get, not flashy, but real. So it is interesting that you are exploring this area, I like that you are doing this, thank you for your videos. Actually, I think we will get some expats starting to move to the north in the near future, besides central Mexico. People are flocking to Mexico from all over the world, to live there. I’m actually an expat in another country, returning to “mi México” soon…

    I always love your video's, the tennis shoes over the power lines is common in hood areas here in the states, it's supposed to mark gang turf from what I know, I like Torreón and how you highlight the good,bad,ugly and beautiful of every place you visit, they all have them.

    • @davidostrowski679

    I love you videos David! You are the only UA-camr who shows us Northern Mexico and who actually appreciates its cities. I love northern Mexico not only for the dry desert like climate but for the people, the food and of course for the fact that it’s authentic Mexico and not a tourist saturated area. I don’t care too much for Starbucks, Walmart and Senor frog in Mexico but I do love my Gorditas , elotes and jugo de Jamaica ! Great job ☺️👍👌

      @@davidostrowski679 I guess it could be more common in small towns, like mine. And we also have great burgers and tortas in San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco:) but grilling then like she was kind of doing it no very common since most everywhere people uses the Comal.

The shoes over the electricity wire has a simple meaning, we just throw our old shoes to see them haggin for years. But in the past, if someone died, you will throw his or her shoes over the electrical wires to remember them. In Mexico we have a phrase "ya colgo los tenis" which translate to he already hang up his shoes, to mean that someone has die.
    Plus Torreón is a ver young city, almost 120 years old. You might want to show people the new residential areas like "Las Villas" which is a beautiful place to live.

  • @Vancouver_Dan
    @Vancouver_Dan Рік тому +6

    As you noted, everything you said and showed about Torreon's industrial area applies to Vancouver and I am sure to every other city in North America (except - no carbon gorditas). In fact, the street disorder here (meth heads camping and defecating on urban sidewalks in skid row) is worse than anything I have seen in Mexico. Oh, and yes - we also have shoes strung up on hydro wires.
    But one note: people on vacation want to go to the nicer, well maintained parts of cities (because they can go to the industrial zones and skid rows at home). I don't blame the Torreon Chamber of Commerce (or whomever) for wishing you would highlight the attractive, tourist friendly parts of the city to promote travel visitors. That said - if they want pretty tourism videos - they can pay you - you are more than qualified to do so. Also, you were very fair in repeatedly acknowledging that you were focusing on specific parts of town.
    Finally, I had to laugh - there were English subtitles - so how did Mexi Cats come out as Mexigatos?

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  Рік тому +3

      Haha I amended the subtitles. Backbone came out as 'columna vertebral' LOL.
      I was actually thinking about your point about vacations before I even read this (something you've said before has probably stuck in my mind!). Especially in the last year, I'm not targeting people who want to go to places on vacation (except maybe San Carlos). I completely get that someone probably wouldn't book a trip to Torreón specifically for a vacation when they might get 2 weeks off per year! There'll go to Mazatlán like you! And that's exactly what I would do.
      But as I said in the last one, what I now look for is somewhere which reflects home, not tourism in the slightest. After 6 years I cannot see another colorful building or go to another Revolution Museum. All this means content is less relatable and appeals to locals of those cities more. The more places I go in Mex, or anywhere, the less relatable it will become.
      I'll probably cover it in an upcoming video!

    • @Vancouver_Dan
      @Vancouver_Dan Рік тому

      @@davidostrowski679 Thanks to you (and A Couple of Drifters) we wandered through areas of Mazatlán that I am sure few extranjeros have been to (including he port/ warehouse district that I could relate to as a person living in a port and the Sunday tianguis in barrio Benito Juarez). But, its was a short trip - we could only devote so much time to walking past cars on blocks, garbage filled creeks and abandoned warehouses. And funny thing - the locals must have thought we were so bad ass crazy to be bumbling through unpolished areas that no one dared bother us.
      But anyway - thank you for your efforts - you have definitely broadened my horizons and my perspective towards travelling.
