U.S. 2nd Fleet Establishment Ceremony

- Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson presided over a ceremony establishing U.S. 2nd Fleet and naming Vice Adm. Andrew “Woody” Lewis as the commander during a ceremony aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), Aug. 24, at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.
U.S. 2nd Fleet will exercise operational and administrative authorities over assigned ships, aircraft and landing forces on the East Coast and the North Atlantic. Additionally, it will plan and conduct maritime, joint and combined operations as well as train and recommend certification of combat-ready naval forces for maritime employment and operations around the globe. U.S. 2nd Fleet will fall under operational control of U.S. Fleet Forces Command. (U.S. Navy video/Released)
2nd Fleet is ssigned to patrol the Western, and North Atlantic.
3rd Fleet is the Eastern, and Northern Pacific.
4th Fleet is the Southern Atlantic.
5th Fleet is the Mediterranean, and Persian Gulf.
6th Fleet is the Eastern and North Atlantic.
7th Fleet is the Western Pacific, and Indian Ocean.
The 1st Fleet is currently inactive, but if we had more ships, it would be assigned to the Pacific Ocean.

I knew this wasn't a new fleet. Rather a reactivated fleet.
The fleet covering the North Atlantic had been deactivated at the end of the Cold War when our Military underwent a R.I.F..

But, I thought the fleet number covering the North Atlantic, the one that had been deactivated at the end of the Cold War, was the 3rd Fleet. (So I went to Wikipedia to check)
I still think this area of the worlds oceans was covered by the 3rd Fleet, but I didnt find anything to confirm that.
I'll have to ask an old Navy man from that era. But, I forget everytime I talk to one. My brother, or brother in law would know, but i havent brought it up with either one. (Its not real important, just a question of my memory.)
I do think this was the 3rd Fleets AO , but things got shuffled around when our military went through the R.I.F., after the Cold War.
Our military isnt nearly as big as it was in those days.
The Army, and Navy, were hit the hardest.

poor poor petty officer. I am 99.99% sure that he got a mouths full by the Vice Admiral later on but a very very nice recovery i might add.
