Yeah, thats definitely a learning i had over the course of my gaming career. When all the trophy and achievement systems were introduced i became obsessed with 100% everything to the extent it sometimes felt more like a second job than a hobby. Thinking about getting every feather in AC2 still makes me cringe lol. Now i only do what i enjoy and it improved my enjoyment and stressless so much.

Yep. Ive only 100% like 5 games in my life. Most of my favorite games i have not 100%, like any fromsoft game even though I have about 4000 hours across ds1-3 bb and elden ring. Theres always one or two achievements that are just too much trouble.
Of the games I have 100% 3 of them are spyro(1-3) when I was a kid, had more time and not that many games.
Granted I play a lot of strategy game now too, and those are not meant to 100%. When one total war campaign can be around 25 hours and they have like 100 different playable factions at this point in the warhammer series..... yeah not happening.

    • @deifiedtitan

@NOP-b6h ACII is my poster-child for games that wear out their welcome due to bloat. The majority of collectibles and repeat missions aren’t particularly fun, challenging, engaging, or ultimately even rewarding. Very much the case that it exists to justify the budget that goes into making multiple city sandboxes, when realistically the core story plus like one of each kind of bonus mission in each city district would already be enough. The game itself is great but the Ubisoft nonsense was strong even back then and absolutely cripples the pacing. On replays I’ve found myself wanting to quit by Venice and it’s because I tend to see as much content as I can, which is detrimental to enjoyment in games that are brimming with empty-calorie content.

It's funny how 100%ing Tactics Ogre doesn't even come close to actually 100%ing it. The 100 floors are the ...first version. It goes to 115, then there's another around 25 for San Bronsa, then 4 more Coda chapters that the achievements don't even mention.
The funniest part? That's like 50% of the game. There are so many plot variations, alternate cutscenes, and more based on how you play that even with the time jump option, it can take months to get all of them. Does give a new perspective when you see just how much of a liar so many of the characters are in these alternate scenes. Catiua losing her patience on someone because their boyfriend just died saving them, but she wants to leave is wild to see. Or a boss winding up permanently paralyzed in a wheelchair because you did half of their betrayal arc.

I mean, this applies any game, really. Game achievements are carrots set out from other people for you. • @Endinai5566

I always took Tactics Ogre 100% as something for the fans that were REALLY into the game, and i think content like that is fine. Maybe something that is a little samey but gives you more of what you already have so you can play with all the stuff you unlocked. I feel like that is one thing OG FFT lacked. It always felt kind of bad getting the best stuff in the game, but it was either a hunt to gather it all and by the time you do you are so incredibly overpowered you dont have anything to do with it, or they just give it to you 5 minutes before the final boss in which case you still cant really play with it. I had a blast doing a 100% run on Crystal Project, which is mostly just killing a mix of super bosses, but you more or less have to go into the super bosses WITH end game gear and setup or you will probably have a bad time (at least on hard, not sure how those fights went on easy or normal). You also unlock a harder version of the final boss which doesn't really give you anything but a pat on the back.
Just padding a game world out with sidequests that don't really make sense or add to the story or the mortal sin that is randomly generated quests is just something I'm not going to show up for. I go into every game with the mindset of a 100%, but I don't actually take very many to that point because the 100% just ends up having a ton of bloat and not really any fun.

Here are the games I think of (not necessarily recent):
Tales of Symphonia: perhaps my favorite game, but to get 100% you need to play through the whole thing a minimum of 5 times, making a different minor choice towards the end. I might end up doing this eventually just because I am obsessed.
Civilization games (5 & 6 are what I’ve played): one game of Civ takes forever, but there are achievements for each leader and map type so it would take a lot of dedication and time.

As someone who 100% Final Fantasy 16, I can't really agree with you, but I understand your point. My own experience is that I am so absorbed into the combat and this was the first game where I actually never skipped a dialogue or cutscene, so I really enjoyed the side quests too. Some of them even got me a bit emotional. I only say "apples". But ultimately, replaying the game in Final Fantasy mode was a BLAST. Being able to absolutely annihilate most of the bosses with endgame builds and then suddenly struggling against most of the late game bosses because FF mode is really just a massive "fuck you" in the sense of Devil May Cry's "Dante Must Die", I loved finally beating even Leviathan and Omega to get the two final achievements. The rest of the achievements aren't hard either, it's just challenging you to do different builds.

I have in total 3 games at 100% (all 3 are Mimimi stealth tactics games) and 2 others being very close (one more Mimimi + Horizon Zero Dawn). 😂 The thing is: even in the stuff I enjoy very much I'm not particularly good at it. So most of the time, achievements for the highest difficulty are not my thing.😅

Very interesting. I really liked the side content in Ragnarok, I think it managed to enrich the main story, the only gripe I would say I had with side stuff was that the whole mystery of the Crater part in Vanaheim felt bit unfinished. Other than that, Platinum that was very much worth the time and I would gladly replay it all, if I didn't had huge backlog waiting

I've mentioned it a couple of times and you probably won't ever play it because it's only on console but the dark chronicle platinum trophy is just pain because of the awful requirement to get all badges in every dungeon, one of which becomes inaccessible after you finish it so you can't just come back with all the stuff you need and sweep it, you have to grind for literal hours to get all of them.

I think what needs to be said in regards to tactics ogre reborn however, is the fact that you can literally autopilot all the encounters. You don't have to play manually at all if you don't want to. So if you do it on the side while watching a movie or something, it doesn't feel like a chore at all

Heh, I've done 3 of these. Tactics Ogre Reborn does require you to complete floor 100 of the Palace of the Dead (The "Necromancer Scourge" trophy/achievement), which is a huge hassle to even unlock the ability to do, but that's not even all of the content since there's also CODA 2-4 and the San Bronsa Ruins. Infinite Wealth really wasn't that bad compared to most Yakuza games if you don't have the DLC, would actually recommend it in that case. FF16 was a soul-crushing platinum because FF mode changes almost nothing so you have to complete the entire game again for no reason. Other bad ones: Monster Hunter World + Iceborne (crowns), FFXIII (Treasure Hunter farming), Dark Souls 3 (covenant item farming).

    1)freebies

    3) die X times / die in this way (the dumbest "achievements" of them all)
So I don't feel the need to 100% games, I have better ways to waste my time, thank you :D
On the other hand, the difficulty/ "flawlessing" bosses/occasionally ironman ones and achievements such as the "Sadistic Game Design" in WotR where it's like the developer directly tells you "that would be the ideal way to play the game", sometimes i just feel like I HAVE to :D

Some of the early side quests in ff16 are dull but they get better as the main quests progress. They add a lot of depth to the world the lore and the characters.
I also think that's it is best if you to do side quests as they appear as a lot of them are related to events in the main quest and it will get a bit confusing if you try save them for later after completing a bunch of main quest missions.

While I think the FF16's side-quests do leave something to be desired, and you do need to do them twice to get the ultimate weapon on hard-mode, the quests do not take up that much of your time overall, adding a few hours at most to the total game time. I could say they're boring, but to me there's always going to be boring stuff when you 100% a game, and that not being too time consuming and I believe skippable on the NG+ mode makes them much more tolerable.
Tactics Ogre, I agree with you, but not for Palace of the Dead. POTD honestly takes about 10 hours, most floors can be auto-battled, and you can skip probably a quarter of the floors if your goal is only to get to Level 100. The CODA post-game is much more challenging and time-consuming, most of which is not canon and just bonus content added, and you get fine rewards, but the reward to time ratio really isn't worth it to me.
However, where I think 100% is not feasible, is the game has an in-game achievement system, that tracks did you get every item/conversation/event/etc. And that, I would not recommend to anyone. To put this in perspective, you get different conversations if people are alive or dead in your party, including Chapter 1 characters, so you're talking dozens of playthroughs, having to start at Chapter 1, specifically killing off characters you may have spent a lot of time investing stat boosts into, to go after all the dialog options. And then there's the item drops which are in some cases 1% RNG, and in the worst case you can't reroll via the rewind feature, and it just becomes something so time-consuming and not challenging that, even loving the game, I'd never attempt.
In that vein, not sure if on your other list ,but Final Fantasy 10. I love the game, but the grind to build up character stats and so much blitzball and to get all the ultimate weapons kills the end-game for me and prevents me from going back to it. Unlike FF16, the massive time investment ruins any desire to go back and 100% the game, which I never did outside acquiring the ultimate weapons in the past.

Might be an unpopular take (I don't know) but the sidequests in 16 wasn't as bad for me, what was the real problem was that they just imported the quest design of them from the MMO thinking that would be okay but if you kept doing them and got to the end of their quest chains some of them resulted in really good stories being told (like the one with the merchant and her brother I think) but you have to get through really bad quest design for it which can colour people's opinions on it.
