  • These commercials aired on NBC on May 15th, 1979
    1. 100% Florida Grapefruit Juice (Kind of weird that the husband and wife just repeat basically the same thing)
    2. Breyers Ice Cream
    3. Promo for "Real People"
    4. "Special Treat" Intro (These bumpers are among the goofiest things that I've ever posted and I love them)
    5. "How The Beatles Changed The World" Intro (A documentary retrospective mixed with contemporary cover versions of Beatles songs)
    6. "Special Treat" Commercial Bumper
    7. Nestle $100,000 Bar
    8. TV Spot for "101 Dalmatians"
    9. Honey Comb (With free finger writing pen)
    10. Kool-Aid (Kool-Aid Man subverting expectations by coming in from the damn ceiling! I also love the animated mouth on him at the end)
    11. "Special Treat" Commercial Bumper
    12. Silly Putty Man Adventure Kit
    13. Burger King (The supposedly creepy "Burger King" later spoofed in the 2000's was actually the least frightening aspect of these old ads)
    14. Trident Sugarless Mints
    15. Promo for "The Sacketts" (A miniseries featuring a pre "Magnum, P.I." Tom Selleck)
    16. American Dental Plan
    17. Promo for "Sha Na Na" (A hugely popular musical variety TV show that aired in syndication from 1977-81)
    18. "Special Treat" Commercial Bumper
    19. Crayola Crayons and Markers
    20. Trident (With Steve Cauthen and Anne Smith)
    21. Super Sugar Crisp (With free terrarium)
    22. Tang (I had no idea that Tang was actually a giant robot)
    23. "Special Treat" Commercial Bumper
    24. Nestle Quik
    25. Burger King
    26. Listermint

Totally agree about the Special Treat bumpers. Brings me back to my childhood with a bit of Sesame Street vibes. lol

In the 80s, those shows and later Main Street with Bryant Gumbel preempted game shows on KYW when it was at NBC station.

Breyers Ice Cream- I like how the condensation on the cherry on top of the ice cream at 0:31 makes it look like the cherry is sweating.
Burger King- The character of a puppet burger in a frame throughout this commercial reminds me of Grimace from McDonald’s.

I was born in early March of 1979, so I was about two months old when these commercials aired. Watching these made me feel old, LOL!

Special Treat was NBC's version of the afterschool specials seen on ABC and CBS once a month. This ran until 1986.

100% Florida Grapefruit Juice-drinking it in slow sips is recommended
Real People-every episode was just like the announcer described 🤣
How The Beatles Changed The World-wouldnt have minded if it were just an entire special of David Clayton Thomas doing Beatles covers
Nestle $100,000 Bar-nowadays there's lots of recipes online on how to create your own
Honey Comb-liked the animation in this ad

Children make back flips on a trampoline look so easy. I remember when I got double bounced on somebody's back yard trampoline and landed a back flip when I was like 8 that was when my gymnastics career was winding down

Interesting mix of kid- and adult-oriented commercials here. This was when I was watching "kiddie" shows, but I don't remember "Special Treat."
2:07--I love that catchy jingle for the Nestle $100,000 bar (still around, but now called 100 Grand).
3:38--The Kool-Aid pitcher was an advertising icon back then.
4:12--I loved Silly Putty when I was a kid, but I never had that Man Adventure Kit when I was a kid,
5:42--What ever happened to Trident Sugarless Mints? Great jingle here.
7:43--Trident gum, on the other hand, is alive and well.
8:13--Ah, Super Sugar Crisp! I believe originally (even before my time) it was just "Sugar Crisp." Then, of course, it became taboo to use the word "sugar" in the name of a cereal, so it became "Super Golden Crisp" (and I think now it's just "Golden Crisp"). I actually had one of those little terrariums.
9:16--Another advertising icon of the day--the Nestle Quik rabbit who keeps trying (and failing) to drink Quik (now called Nesquik) slowly.
10:46--What ever happened to Listermint? I haven't seen that brand of mouthwash in ages. It also came in cinnamon flavor.

Wow. I just watched a set of commercials from 1993. That was 30 years ago.
In 1993, 1979 seemed like it was another time and it was 14 years before then.
Fourteen years before now was 2009. I can't imagine anyone caring enough to put commercials from that year online in a collection, nor do I know of any.

Special Treat was NBC's answer to ABC's Afterschool Specials back in the 1970s. I think they might have discontinued them in the 1980s. That was when CBS tried to compete with their Schoolbreak Specials.
