I've seen a lot of people ignore the first scene (Itachi falling) or misunderstand it, Itachi was actually trying to commit suicide but then he imagined the cries of Sasuke and stopped himself from falling because he didn't want him to grow up without an older brother

I am asking a real questions not trying to start an argument, because I am really curious what the answers are. I asked one of my kids about shipping and his explanation was more confusing.
He had me watch his favorite Anime recently and I enjoyed it, so I looked for additional content like this page. Overall I've noticed shipping characters is quite a thing in these communities, but the whe concept is very confusing to me.
Why is this a thing? Why is it important,, especially on series that are action/adventure instead of romance. It mostly happens when two (cute) male characters are close friends. They will inevitably get shipped. It is the same kind of friendship displayed by 2 girls that would have called each other BFF. Is it because people do not think 2 guys can have that kind of close relationship without it being sexual?
Shipping is rarely presented as purely romantic, just heavy on the sexual presentation often with a splash of innuendo.
