Lightning strike triggers massive explosion at Oxford power plant

- New footage has emerged of a lightning strike triggering a “massive” explosion at a green power plant near Oxford, sending a “shockwave” through residential streets and a fireball towering into the evening sky.
Residents, including one couple who live about three miles away, said that they heard “one enormous loud bang” and felt their properties shake after the bolt of lightning hit a biogas tank.
The explosion at Green Power Cassington AD Facility, which is run by Severn Trent and is just off the A40 near Oxford Airport, was followed by “pulsating” flames that lasted for about two minutes and gave the area an “apocalyptic orange glow”.

i love the fact that they give you absolutely 0 information about a) what the plant is, b) when this actually happened, c) expert opinion on how it happened and d) what the owners of the facility had to say. i feel like this is GCSE english language skills. so here you go if you are confused as to what this “power plant” is. from what i can gather it’s a small WASTE MANAGEMENT plant that produces a very small amount of electricity from the processed waste a year. it’s not a nuclear power plant or really a proper power plant at all. i’m just sharing bc i had to look it up myself. thanks
also lightning rods were probably used but they are NOT GUARANTEED to work. on any building by the way, so just think about that next time there’s a storm near you ;-)
Was there a satelite overhead at the time? You know, conspiracy theory & 2 over Maui re: fires, lightning etc.
It's an anaerobic digester, the big green tent looking structures you can see in drone footage are essentially industrial cow stomachs. They break down silage from the clamp beside it in the absence of oxygen (A.D Plants tend to use silage from things such as maize or wholecrop cereals, which is why its a renewable energy source). The breakdown process from the microorganisms creates methane and CO2 (biogas). Meaning, the lightning strike hitting the digester must have ignited the flammable gas inside, although I'm not entirely sure how.
@@jackhobbs9691 thats so interesting! thanks
So maybe some kind of methane explosion
So when did they start building power plants with out protection from lighting strikes? I mean has something changed all of a sudden 😉
Are you fking stooped? It's basically a big mulch bin not like a giant PowerPlant
I never knew they gave them protection
Someone has dropped the ball on this, big time! You'd expect that lightning earthing and fire suppression would get inspected periodically (annually?) Especially at a high risk building!
Probably pencilled in by the tories for later
only act AFTER an event remember , like grenfell tower, lets NOT put plastic round buildings that melts n kills people ? yeh ok sounds like a plan . Now you say that it makes sense what with hundred of dead people etc etc . Imagine the carnage that could have caused
It wasn't a power plant. It was a biomass gas collection / storage plant. There are photos of the silos available if you could be bothered to look.
Bro these people have the most British reaction just “oo that’s massive” not even worried at all
The frequency of these randomized events seems implausible.
I think its an escalating world war 3. Sabotages before large scale warfare.
Wow.
It's almost unbelievable that a lightning strike could cause such an explosion at a power plant, in a fully developed country in 2023!
One would expect that such a high risk building would have sufficient lightning earthing (with redundancy), and that the earthing (and also fire suppression systems) would be checked at least annually.
Someone has dropped the ball big time on this!
Cue *frantic* building inspections at similar facilities throughout the UK 😂!
🤣 someone doesn’t actually understand the damage a lightning strike can do
@JHDXtreme
Lightning strikes buildings frequently. And vehicles.
You don't understand what proper lightning earthing should achieve.
but...but...but surely the world is safe and everything is safe and heath and safety has made everything safe and im safe its current year we should be safe.
@davidhill3595
Yes, you *should* be safe from lightning strikes in a building if the building was built to current regulatory standards!
Now, if the lightning earthing on a building for some reason fails, then you wouldn't necessarily be safe.
In this case, the earthing has either failed, or was not up to regulation standard in the first case.
happens ln ukraine all the time
I'm sure no other video's that are closer and real will be available. Ever.
Does nobody use lightning rods anymore?
Oh look at that clear night sky no clouds or storms.
I keep wondering about the food processing plants etc here in the US. Never heard who the people in the planes were that hit a couple, and other questions.
😮
Local folks have your drinking water tested. This was between two major reservoirs. Don't be east Palestine repeated.

@@catabaticanabatic3800massive chemical spill in America recently.
weird no one is even mentioning the mental weather yesterday ?
I’m not from anywhere near the area, but someone else said there was an intoxicating smell in the air.
@@ArdentlyGrant This had nothing in common at all with the train wreck. This was just a gas explosion at a waste food digester.
I did wonder how 1 lightening strike with no previous severe storm or torential rain could hit that just right to cause the explosion.
I saw a lightning strike, heard a bang, and thought that's a loud bit of thunder😂
I agree why is the sky moving. ? Not buying this
US laser strike, as in Maui?
@@sueg3415why is the sky moving? The Earth rotates, but because you don't feel the rotation, it looks like the sun, moon and stars are moving. Clouds move in the sky because of the wind.
And in the video shot from the car, the car is moving, which keeps changing the perspective on the background.
Lightning can strike without a severe storm, or even a mild storm. Arid parts of the US, for example, are susceptible to dry lighting, which is lightning that occurs with no rain.
@@robertseavor4304 *Chinese satellites dummy.
Lightning strike and explosion, sounds like a titan to me
In the absence of a photo of a lightening strike, could it be the exploding diarrhea we keep reading about?
No grounding cable?? 😮
Lighting strike not space lazer from a Chinese satellite?
Even though there's no rain we can see 🤷♂️
This is just a video someone made. They're not journalists. And they said it was at Oxford Power plant. If we want more info we have to search.
Jungle is massive
Surely someone must've caught the 'bang'? I'm pretty sure I heard it and thought it was thunder
When can we play Fallout irl?
sorry guy i was just testing out my new davy crockett recoilless rifle. I will be more careful in future
shortly after call of duty sell lightning bolt suits n milk the sh*t out of it :P

I'm not seeing it.
Edit: Why are you commenting on basically every comment on this video? Who does that?
digesters produce flammable gases that generate electricity. now they'll have to buy electricity from the grid instead of making it onsite. so another cost increase factor coming your way I reckon@@skywardsoul1178
They ought to be fined for that. No excuses.
Fined for what? We don't actually know what happened lol sit back down ye fool
Beautiful 🤩
😮 Holy Moly!
Hell of a bonfire night
No way was that lightning.
Lightning has a lot of electricity in it, and methane is explosive, so, yes it can be lightning.
Of course it's lighting just like all the fires were natural abroad
How do you fake a lightning strike?
Edit: At this point do you believe that you as a person are real? Why not find more concrete evidence that doesn't prove itself?
@kv4648 by beamin a laser from the sky that starts fires.

Where is that lightning exactly!?
I love the "quotes" around certain "words" to make this seem "epic".
0:12 - That's what she said.
Seems suspicious to me! I’m still wondering if voltage drops didn’t cause the fires at all of the food processing facilities!
Directed Energy Weapon???
Guess they never heard of lightening rods. Such trusty power plant experts, eh?🤔🙄
Where have I heard this before 🤔
Grounding equipment was on strike that day apparently.
Was there even a storm in that area?
Yes. Rain and lighting for like 2 hours
No it's all fake Russian drone strike obviously 🤦🤦🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
No. Everything is a lie.
Oh at first I would have thought that this was a nuke
Oh so that's why the power went out

Wow 😮
“Lightning.” Uh huh… sure it was “lightning”. In mid October. In UK. At a power plant. Where lightning prevention / resistance would undoubtedly be installed.
BTW, for a “news” outlet, you might want to include info such as where Oxford is, what type of “green energy” plant this was, a statement from the National Met Office, and UK’s version of Emergency Management Office so that we get the full context, maybe? I’m sure the lad in the car saying it was struck by lightning isn’t just making it up, but it would be great to have officials on the record saying it was lightning ;)
Dry thunderstorm? Ha ha.
Every minecraft players worst nightmare that pesky lighting
Or even lightning...
@@patrickpowers5995 double entendre
Of course it was hit by lightning, I wouldn't dream of saying it was deliberately trying to knock the power off.
I live in Oxfordshire and guess what? We had localized lightening strikes which is not uncommon this time of year. My advice. Next time you have lightening put on your favorite tinfoil hat , go outside and enjoy the BUZZZZ⚡⚡⚡
Some people just make up conspiracies for no reason. Why would the Government blow up a power plant?

Who sings have so much lightning protection against events, like that cannot see how this can possibly happen.
Either it was not lightning strike, and something else that they don’t want to say .
