  • Here is an easy water change system that lots of you keep asking about. Seriously wish I had made this before! All that time carrying buckets everywhere!
Make sure you put in your water conditioner / dechlorinator to your tank just as you start filling back up.

Hi everyone, I hope you are all having a great day. I actually only recently come up with the system after lugging 20litre (5 gallon) jerry cans around for 2 years 🤣. This makes doing water changes on loads of tanks or just big tanks in general a lot easier. And the reason that is good is because you are far more likely to do them more often. Water changes definately improve everything in your aquarium. 30% per week seems to be the sweet spot for me once its set up well and established.

Two comments: make sure your local water facility does not use chlorine for the tap water! This will more or less instantly kill your shrimps and most of your fish!
Here in Germany the water facility normally publishes online if they intend to use chlorine (mostly summer times due to increased bacteria).
Second: if you have floating algea (greenish cloudy water) you can use Daphne's to filter the algea. You can get a (big) packet of fresh living food Daphne's and put them into a sock from your wife and hang that in front of the water outlet. The Daphne's should clear out the algea in a day or two and can then be fed to the fish

I need this water change system. I'm about to start my very first aquascape, just soaking my river wood and cleaned my dragon stone. I'm using my existing tank, an Aqua One Aqua Style AR850, 165L, but i think if I get the bug, it won't be long before I get an Opti white open tank and go full steam ahead. Thank you for the videos, I have a lot to learn.

  • @juderyan1284

I do something similar for water changes but have fashioned a U shaped hook out of cheap poly pipe (irrigation pipe), using two 90° elbows and three lengths of pipe. This hooks over the aquarium. The piece of pipe in the aquarium is cut longer than needed. It is then simple to rotate this piece of pipe around to drain to the desired depth. On the outlet end I have a hose connector fitting that clicks straight into a hose. In order to start the siphon, I simply turn the tap on to fill the hose, pop it in the aquarium then disconnect the hose from the tap - no sucking on a hose lol. You can add a stop valve also to be able to keep from having to restart between aquariums. Just reverse the flow to refill and that's it.

@NihlusGreenI actually own a copy of Ecology of the Planted Aquarium and its in my hands right now.
"Less objectionable [than flocculents] are antibiotics and UV sterilizing filters... UV sterilizing filters will kill green water algae without harming the other tank inhabitants." (P. 158) Flocculents are the clearing agents which MD recommended which Walstad thinks "should never be used in home aquariums, or at least those containing fish." (P. 158) Walstad doesn't recommend the use of flocculents because the positively charged compounds can bind to the gill surfaces of fish which carry a negative charge.

If you don’t mind me asking, what do you do that you can afford all this? Forgive me if I’m out of hand for asking this question.

Cloudy usually happens when they’re not enough surface area for bacteria to live on when they multiply. Lava rocks have a lot of pores and surface area. Might help to have them in the filter if you don’t like them in the tank.
