Who needs two islands? I’m getting some chemistry lab or Benihana vibes from that kitchen with the two long skinny islands. It just needs some Bunsen burners or a hibachi grill. I actually like that second idea. I’d love to have a hibachi restaurant in my kitchen if someone else is doing the cooking and cleaning. I can think exactly one way double kitchen island might make sense in actual home. That is with wide kitchen that would have wide island, but you cut it in half in order to be able to go around easier. I also get why rich people have double or even triple islands. They aren't the ones using it. It's basically professional kitchen, made to look nice for pictures, so the chef they employ can use it with catering service for the 50 people sit down service parties they host. There is probably a "breakfast nook" somewhere with a coffee maker, fridge and microwave that is only thing the owner actually ever uses.
When you said "baby Alpaca throw", I had to celebrate. 14 years ago, we went to Peru for my husbands Masters program. We were too poor to bring home much. Lucky to afford the trip at all with 4 small children (2-7years). Anyway, the one thing I had always wished I could get was a baby Alpaca throw. They are so beautiful and soft. Last November my friend went to Peru and brought me one home for my birthday. Now I have a cozy reminder of a special friend and important time for my family.

I LOVE THIS. I work in residential construction for VERY wealthy people and when they move in, the best we can figure is the clients think "What is the most expensive thing I can buy" and pick that out based on price and nothing else. Lol, the finished houses are hideous! Thank you Nick, you have really validated this pet peeve of mine.

Do people with a lot of money lack people in their lives who aren’t afraid to tell them they’re making a mistake? Do they not realize that the main reason we’re not buying Ashley Furn is bc it’s too matchy-matchy and thus cheap looking? Don’t they realize that marble on every surface gives the matchy vibe, thus they’re out of style even before the last piece is installed?
When we chose the Italian porcelain tiles for our ground floor, my priority was whether our muddy retrievers could lie on them without anyone noticing they had been there. They were expensive (the tiles not the retrievers😂) but I'm not panicking about how clean they look, all the time. Our sofas are locally made -not mass produced - & were chosen for their clean-ability and comfort, for humans and dogs. We live in a home, not a status symbol.
I don't get the multiple islands either. Unless you're running a restaurant or a culinary class from your home you don't need that much countertop space 😅
Even with hosting guest, that's what a table is for. The exception is if you are a chef that likes to show off for guest. Then, have those 3 island with stools and serve individually as you cook! Then, at least, it has a real function.
I have 2 islands 😅 we use them all the time, but I live on a farm and I can and preserve food and bake loads of bread. Been known to use the space for incubating chicken eggs 😂 I am also not rich lol

You may want to consider the possibility that Harry and Meg did not actually pay $1,650 for the Hermes blanket, but that Hermes gave them the blanket and then paid them a whole lot more than $1,650 to display it prominently in a video.
That Ultrafragola mirror looks like a designer dupe of the Krabb Ikea mirror that EVERYONE had in their childhood bedroom years ago! 😶🌫️ Also, I nearly died laughing at your "unless you want to feel like in a science class" coming at the multiple kitchen islands. As a science teacher this is exactly how I feel about them 😂
THIS! It's just THAT IKEA mirror from the 90s/early 00s. I remember it was the cheapest full length they sold and I was so annoyed I couldn't just get a straight full length mirror without spending double.
I used to have this rich boss who was a self-proclaimed "interior designer" and the marble everywhere is 100% true. She plastered the living room, windowsill, the tops of dressers, tables with marble. Perfect example of just because you can, doesn't mean you should, and ofc the all white everything! Just makes the whole place seem cold and bland.
I live in Portugal and marble is a very popular material for everything, including window sills and door thresholds the top of dresser and nightstands, but that is very old school, not really done any more. Having said that my apartment, which was finished in 1979 had a marble fireplace surround and has marble in the enclosed balcony. I have changed the fireplace surround for something more light and modern, we had to replace the older fireplace and we had to replace the surround as they nee unit was a different size.
So right about the Bellini sofa being over exposed. My 18 year old, whose room is decorated with album covers and dirty socks, recently showed me a photo of it as something they thought would be cool in their bedroom. (Has no concept of costs.)
What I hate most about the hermes throw is that the buyer is paying them an exorbitant amount for the privilege of giving them free advertising. The hot dog sofa makes me laugh every time. The marble ceilings scare me - how heavy are they and what's keeping slabs from falling in an earthquake?
Sort of funny that you showed Kim K and Kanye West's original French Country style kitchen with three islands as an example since they immediately changed it to one large island when they did their minimalist renovation. Rule of thumb might be if you have room for two, three, or more kitchen islands...your kitchen is probably too big to be either comfortable or functional for a normal-sized household. Unless it's used as a banquet hall, you can put a smaller kitchen in a larger home if need be.
Burberry plaid is at least a very aesthetically pleasing, well-balanced, registered tartan. The Hermes blanket feels more like Louis Vuitton anything because they only seem to use their LV pattern anymore. But also, that blanket looks like its finished like $3 walmart fleeces which irks me to NO END! You are quite literally paying for that H because as someone who works with wool and fiber and fabric.. its finished like crap. I mean, most commercially made wool blankets are simply because they can be. But if I'm paying that price, regardless of design, there should be a wool tape edging if fringe is undesired. Honestly, I could custom knit a blanket far more beautiful in same blend of yarn for the same amount or maybe less.
The funniest thing about the Herme's blanket is that if you go back to the colours it came in it appears to be a designer dupe of the Harry Potter House Merc....or your local sports team. Meanwhile Ikea now sells a really lovely 100% wool woven blanket for less then $100.00 that looks wayy more premium because it's not branded or obviously Ikea.
I own an authentic Mario Bellini for B&B Italia Camaleonda, and it is sublimely comfortable! I’d wanted one for years prior to finally pulling the trigger just because I love how versatile and customizable it is with the hooks and the endless configurations. I promised myself I’d love and keep it even when it inevitably fell out of favor again. And I do agree that time has come - it’s overdone and derivative at this point, so naturally it’s become trendy to beat up on this sofa. But the #1 reason I see repeated ad nauseam is “it doesn’t look comfortable” and this just isn’t the case. I think people are confusing the lower end dupes for the real deal, because the B&B Italia Bellini is soft, luxurious and utterly exquisite. I’ve had guests sleep on this couch and they always remark on it being one of the most comfortable sofas they’ve ever encountered. I myself take long naps on it every week. So, I feel inclined to defend the (authentic) Bellini in this regard! I also can’t help but feel sad that dupes and an overabundance of knockoffs have corrupted design classics like the Bellini and Ettore Sottsass’s Ultrafragola mirror. The Memphis movement is fascinating and very niche, and the Ultrafragola is a piece of functional art that was never intended for mass market use. 99% of what you’re seeing on IG consists of cheap replicas. You can’t lump these in with the authentic pieces, and I wish more people would call for the end of badly made, hastily assembled, fast furniture knockoffs, vs coming for the original pieces which at this point are icons of design and IMO timeless. If you’re buying an authentic Bellini, you’re most likely buying it for life. So instead of canceling specific designs, let’s cancel wasteful trend cycles and imitation/fast furniture with zero regard for quality or sustainability.
couldn't agree more, Memphis is not for everyone, but it's so playful and exciting! Some people in the comments said that Ultrafragola is an expensive designer dupe of that wavy ikea mirror while if anything it's the other way around, as Ultrafragola was designed in the 70s.

I find it funny since "home" is a store brand for basic stuff around the house that uses helvetica H as its logo so trough my cultural lense it looks both very cheap and just bad because of the corners and sides
I don't want one in my house, but I kind of love the Mario Bellini sofa. It's so blobby and the way it forms this sort of landscape in the middle of the room is super fun.
I am always reminded of the line in a Bob Hope movie "That H doesn't stand for Harvard, boy" I went to Christmas party once and since the house was full of trends like so many others I couldn't remember which party I was at. Cookie cutter. Too many people are so unsure of their own taste they copy everything.
I just recently saw an fiber artist at my local farmers market with the most gorgeous hand brushed alpaca throw blankets, they were right around $300 too. I'd be far more impressed seeing that one someone's sofa than a $1650 blanket they were able to buy with a couple clicks online.
I totally agree with you on the double/tripple kitchen islands and marble overkill in the bathrooms! I'm in real estate and see it a lot. It is extually hard to sell homes with such features. Not all rich people love it :)
Your first "marble everywhere" pic reminded me of the time I was hired to repair a stained glass window in a mausoleum that had been built in the 1800s. It was 100 percent marble everywhere. We did the job in the winter and there was frost so thick on the floor we had to be careful not to slip. So, no marble everywhere for me!
Was watching a show recently and they had that cloud sofa. the young man jumped off the sofa AND of course the cushions were smashed - I laughed and said to myself, Nick was so right!
That’s what I said, too! The funhouse mirror. I was disappointed that the mirror part was normal, though, and didn’t distort you in some way. I wanted them to look squiggly, too, like the blow up things at the car lots.
For real. Imagine having to vacuum out crumbs, dust, pet hair, etc. from all those tufts and crevices. But rich people likely have maids for that, so what do they care?
The Ultrafragola mirror was designed in 1970 by Ettore Sottsass so i would consider it more a space age design-classic,than Post modern. Living in a classical revival period house it makes beautiful contrast but, of course, it just needs a lot of free surrounding space to make it's impact.
I thank God for Nick Lewis. I reference him often in our design meetings when I'm out there by myself trying to turn an immovable ship from the inevitable death trend my team in pulling me towards no matter how much I'm fighting them.

@@evelien135 That would not make sense. For some reason, equestrians love to surround themselves with horse themed things all around them. To *rich ones* it makes sense to have Hermes things. And the Hermes saddle, the bridle, etc. It's a very niche thing. As I said, if you're neither rich nor an equestrian, you would be *stupid* to buy an Hermes blanket. Trend or not. As a horse lover (but not a rich one) I would be the first one to roll my eyes at the dumb person that is willing to pay 1600 for an Hermes blanket.
Having a surname that starts with H is the only justifiable reason to have that blanket. And then only if it was gifted to you, because spending that on a throw blanket is idiotic.
I’m giving you a big thumbs up for helping people with their design problems and encouraging and supporting people who don’t blindly follow trends to design their spaces with personality and flair.
Would you ever consider doing a "how to mix these styles" type of video? For example, I really love both art nouveau and Japandi styles, but they seem hard to mix to me, and I feel like a lot of times when we talk about design styles they are put into these boxes that don't totally match how people actually set up their spaces.
I love mixing time periods and styles. I want my house to look like a rich and eccentric world traveller lived there. The only way to tie such eclectic styles together is with colour. Pick a colour palette to tie it all together. Also throw in some transition pieces where art nouveau evolved into art deco and it will bridge the gap between the luxurious nouveau flourishes and the more minimalist forms of the japandi.
Not blown away by a 20K sofa, more blown away that someone would spend that on a sofa 😅 That said, we have a 16K leather sectional that used to belong to my work as the boardroom sofa. When they moved offices, they opted for a more conventional boardroom table / chair setup and put the sectional up for sale, for 5K. I said I'll take it and they gave it to me for 2K instead. That was 15 years ago and it still is as beautiful as it was then.
i bought an Eskimo Swiss brand wool blanket for $37 and a wool alpaca blend blanket for $27 (both homegoods). They are 55x74, perfect for one person. I use REI cotton and fleece blanket as first layer and two wool blankets as middle and top layer. The friction keeps the layer sandwich, nothing moves or slips off. It is like layering clothing items in cold days, blanket layering is effective at keeping chill air out that I don’t need heater to sleep warmly.
I literally just considered buying the wavy mirror this week even though it’s had its run and then I see your video 🤣 I ended up purchasing it this morning though lol. I get that it’s a trendy piece but I see it as art, lighting ambiance (you can change the colors, and obviously a mirror. I feel like the rest of my place will be more timeless neutrals so lighting is where I want to go for “fun” I know someone will be excited to buy it at a discount in the future when I’m living somewhere it doesn’t fit in!
Don’t feel bad, the mirror is cool. Even though it may not fit many homes design styles. There’s obviously trends in interiors, but I think most of how a room feels and looks is how you style it, it’s not determined by one individual piece. I love having pops of fun or whimsy and I think this mirror can give that vibe to a home. And the average person who comes to your home will not know this is a design trend haha. I think any piece can work with the right aesthetic, but it might not be to everyone’s tastes, doesn’t mean it can’t still be appreciated.
The thing about people who really can afford anything but then buy overpriced stuff that everyone (who's rich enough) has that bugs me most is that they could have their designers go on 1st dibs and any other similar platform or auction platforms and get the most unique stuff. Instead, they get the no personality sofa and a boring H-throw that could pay for a month's rent of my old NY studio apartment?

Just a word about RH: we’ve been remodeling and furnishing an out of state house for a few years. I think buying upholstered furniture without sitting on it first is nuts. Returning large furniture is a huge hassle and getting refunded takes time. I know from experience. RH is one of the few brick and mortar furniture stores left so one is able to actually touch and see before purchasing. In addition, their customer service is amazing, whereas I’ve had nothing but trouble with other online furniture purchases. And thirdly, while RH is pricey, their perpetual sale is very good and I’ve purchased several discontinued pieces at deep discounts.
Agreed about not sitting on furniture before buying it. That having been said, my local furniture store had me sit on a Smith Brothers sofa and now I wouldn't buy anything else.
100% this. You gotta butt-test anything built for sitting on before you buy it because so many are surprisingly uncomfortable. Particularly the stylish options, since they’re designed for commercial use/to ‘move people along’
I still don't get why people complain about RH furniture - my entire living room is from the RH Outlet and it is the best quality furniture out there. I personally think it was worth it (even at the high outlet prices)!

I really love your video and that you don‘t get on with every design hype. But the Bellini Sofa is actually extremely comfortable and practical. I know because I sold it several times. The idea to be able to assemble your couch every which way you need to whenever you want just by snapping the hooks is very cool. And as long as you’re brave to play with color especially multiple Color’s for one couch you can create an amazing space with it. You have to experience it to know it’s appeal.
When you said Marble I actually gasped and then checked to make sure I was on the right channel. LOL Those all marble bathrooms sort of look like a turkish bath. I enjoy your videos but it's weird, I have zero design energy, but you make it fun and interesting. Thank you!

In addition to the tacky Hermés blanket, nothing says you are tacky, new money with no taste that probably grew up poor like a table with books on it like CHANEL. I just roll my eyes when I see that, it's like the rich version of those tacky Home Goods signs like FAMILY, LAUNDRY, WELCOME etc. 😂 Also I like the cloud sofa, probably wouldn't buy one but I like it. I love double islands too, if you have big families or lots of friends they actually work well, they are also good for separating kids from adults but keeping everyone in the same room.
Ettore Sottsass is a design legend of the memphis milano movement. I hate how social media has killed this mirror's originality. Most of these 'poser's are using the dupes on ones in hotels. I am a huge memphis fan, so agree the 'trend' needs to go for those who want that style forever!

The ONLY reason I can think of to have double islands, is that one island is the eating area/extra prep space. Or maybe extra storage that can't fit against a wall????? Detest the sofas mentioned, as a person with osteoarthritis, I need a couch that has my hips above my knees when seated... so hard to find today. I do like marble, but in small doses. I pretty much have the same reasons as you for not liking the hermes blanket BUT I did love love love seeing a quick snippet of a chandigarh chair in that segment. I am obsessed with Chandigarh and the idea behind it. That chair is such a beautiful and functional piece. I'm thinking about trying to build my own this summer. It's a shame that something that was originally beautifully utopian for use by municipal workers/students/lecturers and designed to be easy to make and affordable is now so expensive the people who sat in those very chairs likely couldn't ever afford them
I have never understood double kitchen islands. What in the world! Who wants to have to maneuver between 2 islands while cooking! Ridiculous, and in my opinion, it looks awful!

I can get behind the double kitchen island if they're utilized differently. Like, if one is more for "business" like cooking, prepping, whatever and the other is for kids doing homework, someone having a snack, socializing, but you want them to be further from the actual cooking--that would make sense to me. The triple island seems like they're just pranking designers at that point.
I would love to know what you think about AD’s David Harbor and Lily Allen’s home. It’s ghastly! I loved David’s home from 3 years ago! It was so cozy! He gave up his style entirely for her and they have this double sided Bellini style sofa (may be an actual one). But would love your opinion after watching both of David’s home tours.
I never understood the Hermes blanket. To me it’s a show of status. I’ve never seen the multiple islands before…that is crazy. But then I have a condo (I love) that it the size of most rich people’s kitchens…lol.

I love Bauhaus furniture and I saved money for years to be able to afford some essential pieces. I also just recently purchased a Togo chair in a bright color and can’t wait for it to arrive. If I was rich … omg I would spend a huuuuge amount of money on furniture and decor, not gonna lie! But I am not a big fan of interior design trends that showcase big brand names like that Hermes blanket. I love flea market finds and throwing them into the mix and am mostly drawn to places that feel original and personal.
Ultrafragola mirror is one of the nicest designs of Memphis style. Ettore Sotsas was the designer. It's postmodern, and apparently post-postmodernists treat it as a meta text, a prove they have sens of humour, or whatnot. As much as I like it, I agree with your opinion, Nick, it's overplayed.
Could you please make a video about how to design rooms with low ceilings? It would be soooo helpful because all the pretty and inspiring pictures are of homes with really beautiful high ceilings!
I saw a video once about research showing what decorative elements cause stress. One of them is jagged lines. Jagged lines certainly make ME uneasy. Granting all that, the bathroom at 7:05 is nightmarish and nerve-jangling (my husband's terms.) Plus that floor will be dangerously slippery. Plus there are no grab bars. Plus the marble will stain. Drop your lipstick and you've got a red spot forever. So this is how the rich live. 2. This may explain the trend towards black lipstick. Drop it in your marble bathroom and no harm.

I can think exactly one way double kitchen island might make sense in actual home. That is with wide kitchen that would have wide island, but you cut it in half in order to be able to go around easier.
I also get why rich people have double or even triple islands. They aren't the ones using it. It's basically professional kitchen, made to look nice for pictures, so the chef they employ can use it with catering service for the 50 people sit down service parties they host. There is probably a "breakfast nook" somewhere with a coffee maker, fridge and microwave that is only thing the owner actually ever uses.

When you said "baby Alpaca throw", I had to celebrate. 14 years ago, we went to Peru for my husbands Masters program. We were too poor to bring home much. Lucky to afford the trip at all with 4 small children (2-7years).
Anyway, the one thing I had always wished I could get was a baby Alpaca throw. They are so beautiful and soft.
Last November my friend went to Peru and brought me one home for my birthday. Now I have a cozy reminder of a special friend and important time for my family.

I work in residential construction for VERY wealthy people and when they move in, the best we can figure is the clients think "What is the most expensive thing I can buy" and pick that out based on price and nothing else. Do people with a lot of money lack people in their lives who aren’t afraid to tell them they’re making a mistake? Do they not realize that the main reason we’re not buying Ashley Furn is bc it’s too matchy-matchy and thus cheap looking?
Don’t they realize that marble on every surface gives the matchy vibe, thus they’re out of style even before the last piece is installed?
When we chose the Italian porcelain tiles for our ground floor, my priority was whether our muddy retrievers could lie on them without anyone noticing they had been there. They were expensive (the tiles not the retrievers😂) but I'm not panicking about how clean they look, all the time. Our sofas are locally made -not mass produced - & were chosen for their clean-ability and comfort, for humans and dogs. We live in a home, not a status symbol.

Even with hosting guest, that's what a table is for. The exception is if you are a chef that likes to show off for guest. Then, have those 3 island with stools and serve individually as you cook! Then, at least, it has a real function.
I have 2 islands 😅 we use them all the time, but I live on a farm and I can and preserve food and bake loads of bread. Been known to use the space for incubating chicken eggs 😂 I am also not rich lol

THIS! It's just THAT IKEA mirror from the 90s/early 00s. I remember it was the cheapest full length they sold and I was so annoyed I couldn't just get a straight full length mirror without spending double.
That Italian mirror was designed in 1970 by a famous Italian designer, Ettore Sottsass. The IKEA mirrors were probably copies made 10 years later.
The pink version looks like a vagina and you can't change my mind on that
I used to have this rich boss who was a self-proclaimed "interior designer" and the marble everywhere is 100% true. She plastered the living room, windowsill, the tops of dressers, tables with marble. Perfect example of just because you can, doesn't mean you should, and ofc the all white everything! Just makes the whole place seem cold and bland.

I live in Portugal and marble is a very popular material for everything, including window sills and door thresholds the top of dresser and nightstands, but that is very old school, not really done any more. Having said that my apartment, which was finished in 1979 had a marble fireplace surround and has marble in the enclosed balcony. I have changed the fireplace surround for something more light and modern, we had to replace the older fireplace and we had to replace the surround as they nee unit was a different size.
So right about the Bellini sofa being over exposed. My 18 year old, whose room is decorated with album covers and dirty socks, recently showed me a photo of it as something they thought would be cool in their bedroom. (Has no concept of costs.)
What I hate most about the hermes throw is that the buyer is paying them an exorbitant amount for the privilege of giving them free advertising.

Sort of funny that you showed Kim K and Kanye West's original French Country style kitchen with three islands as an example since they immediately changed it to one large island when they did their minimalist renovation. Rule of thumb might be if you have room for two, three, or more kitchen islands...your kitchen is probably too big to be either comfortable or functional for a normal-sized household. Unless it's used as a banquet hall, you can put a smaller kitchen in a larger home if need be.
The Hermes blanket is one of the few things that's more pretentious than Burberry plaid.
Not to mention it starts at $1,300K) and is ugly, ugly, ugly.

Burberry plaid is at least a very aesthetically pleasing, well-balanced, registered tartan. The Hermes blanket feels more like Louis Vuitton anything because they only seem to use their LV pattern anymore. But also, that blanket looks like its finished like $3 walmart fleeces which irks me to NO END! You are quite literally paying for that H because as someone who works with wool and fiber and fabric.. its finished like crap. I mean, most commercially made wool blankets are simply because they can be. But if I'm paying that price, regardless of design, there should be a wool tape edging if fringe is undesired. Honestly, I could custom knit a blanket far more beautiful in same blend of yarn for the same amount or maybe less.
Thank goodness I have a timeless Victorian decor with genuine antiques. Never will I have to worry about trends.

The funniest thing about the Herme's blanket is that if you go back to the colours it came in it appears to be a designer dupe of the Harry Potter House Merc....or your local sports team. Meanwhile Ikea now sells a really lovely 100% wool woven blanket for less then $100.00 that looks wayy more premium because it's not branded or obviously Ikea.
I own an authentic Mario Bellini for B&B Italia Camaleonda, and it is sublimely comfortable! I’d wanted one for years prior to finally pulling the trigger just because I love how versatile and customizable it is with the hooks and the endless configurations. I promised myself I’d love and keep it even when it inevitably fell out of favor again. And I do agree that time has come - it’s overdone and derivative at this point, so naturally it’s become trendy to beat up on this sofa. But the #1 reason I see repeated ad nauseam is “it doesn’t look comfortable” and this just isn’t the case. I think people are confusing the lower end dupes for the real deal, because the B&B Italia Bellini is soft, luxurious and utterly exquisite. I’ve had guests sleep on this couch and they always remark on it being one of the most comfortable sofas they’ve ever encountered. I myself take long naps on it every week. So, I feel inclined to defend the (authentic) Bellini in this regard!
I also can’t help but feel sad that dupes and an overabundance of knockoffs have corrupted design classics like the Bellini and Ettore Sottsass’s Ultrafragola mirror. The Memphis movement is fascinating and very niche, and the Ultrafragola is a piece of functional art that was never intended for mass market use. 99% of what you’re seeing on IG consists of cheap replicas. You can’t lump these in with the authentic pieces, and I wish more people would call for the end of badly made, hastily assembled, fast furniture knockoffs, vs coming for the original pieces which at this point are icons of design and IMO timeless. If you’re buying an authentic Bellini, you’re most likely buying it for life. So instead of canceling specific designs, let’s cancel wasteful trend cycles and imitation/fast furniture with zero regard for quality or sustainability.
couldn't agree more, Memphis is not for everyone, but it's so playful and exciting! Some people in the comments said that Ultrafragola is an expensive designer dupe of that wavy ikea mirror while if anything it's the other way around, as Ultrafragola was designed in the 70s.
Great post, I’m now just discovering the Memphis movement coming from a Bauhaus obsession for years. People should love design for the sake of design not just just for popular culture and trendiness.

I just recently saw an fiber artist at my local farmers market with the most gorgeous hand brushed alpaca throw blankets, they were right around $300 too. I'd be far more impressed seeing that one someone's sofa than a $1650 blanket they were able to buy with a couple clicks online.
What I personally see with that mirror is an expensive version of the DIY spray foam mirror. Also bacon. 🥓

Your first "marble everywhere" pic reminded me of the time I was hired to repair a stained glass window in a mausoleum that had been built in the 1800s. It was 100 percent marble everywhere. We did the job in the winter and there was frost so thick on the floor we had to be careful not to slip. So, no marble everywhere for me!
Yes that is the only place where marble looks like it belongs there and the only place I ever saw so much marble in a single room.

The Ultrafragola mirror was designed in 1970 by Ettore Sottsass so i would consider it more a space age design-classic,than Post modern. Living in a classical revival period house it makes beautiful contrast but, of course, it just needs a lot of free surrounding space to make it's impact.
I thank God for Nick Lewis. I reference him often in our design meetings when I'm out there by myself trying to turn an immovable ship from the inevitable death trend my team in pulling me towards no matter how much I'm fighting them.

Hermes is a brand for rich equestrians. If you are not into horses, it does not make sense to have Hermes blankets.

@@evelien135 That would not make sense. For some reason, equestrians love to surround themselves with horse themed things all around them. To *rich ones* it makes sense to have Hermes things. And the Hermes saddle, the bridle, etc. It's a very niche thing. As I said, if you're neither rich nor an equestrian, you would be *stupid* to buy an Hermes blanket. Trend or not. As a horse lover (but not a rich one) I would be the first one to roll my eyes at the dumb person that is willing to pay 1600 for an Hermes blanket.
Having a surname that starts with H is the only justifiable reason to have that blanket. And then only if it was gifted to you, because spending that on a throw blanket is idiotic.
Marble is exquisite but it is best when used sparingly and with intention. Every wall and surface covered in it and it looks like a mausoleum.

Would you ever consider doing a "how to mix these styles" type of video? For example, I really love both art nouveau and Japandi styles, but they seem hard to mix to me, and I feel like a lot of times when we talk about design styles they are put into these boxes that don't totally match how people actually set up their spaces.
My general take on most design is… “If I love it, it works!”
I love mixing time periods and styles. I want my house to look like a rich and eccentric world traveller lived there. The only way to tie such eclectic styles together is with colour. Pick a colour palette to tie it all together. Also throw in some transition pieces where art nouveau evolved into art deco and it will bridge the gap between the luxurious nouveau flourishes and the more minimalist forms of the japandi.
Not blown away by a 20K sofa, more blown away that someone would spend that on a sofa 😅 That said, we have a 16K leather sectional that used to belong to my work as the boardroom sofa. When they moved offices, they opted for a more conventional boardroom table / chair setup and put the sectional up for sale, for 5K. I said I'll take it and they gave it to me for 2K instead. That was 15 years ago and it still is as beautiful as it was then.

i bought an Eskimo Swiss brand wool blanket for $37 and a wool alpaca blend blanket for $27 (both homegoods). They are 55x74, perfect for one person. I use REI cotton and fleece blanket as first layer and two wool blankets as middle and top layer. The friction keeps the layer sandwich, nothing moves or slips off. It is like layering clothing items in cold days, blanket layering is effective at keeping chill air out that I don’t need heater to sleep warmly.
Had to google wtf Eskimo (a slur last time I learned?) have to do with Switzerland 😂 But at least they’re the price a high quality blanket usually is!

I get that it’s a trendy piece but I see it as art, lighting ambiance (you can change the colors, and obviously a mirror. I feel like the rest of my place will be more timeless neutrals so lighting is where I want to go for “fun”

Don’t feel bad, the mirror is cool. Even though it may not fit many homes design styles. There’s obviously trends in interiors, but I think most of how a room feels and looks is how you style it, it’s not determined by one individual piece. I love having pops of fun or whimsy and I think this mirror can give that vibe to a home. And the average person who comes to your home will not know this is a design trend haha. I think any piece can work with the right aesthetic, but it might not be to everyone’s tastes, doesn’t mean it can’t still be appreciated.

The thing about people who really can afford anything but then buy overpriced stuff that everyone (who's rich enough) has that bugs me most is that they could have their designers go on 1st dibs and any other similar platform or auction platforms and get the most unique stuff. Just a word about RH: we’ve been remodeling and furnishing an out of state house for a few years. I think buying upholstered furniture without sitting on it first is nuts. Returning large furniture is a huge hassle and getting refunded takes time. I know from experience. RH is one of the few brick and mortar furniture stores left so one is able to actually touch and see before purchasing. In addition, their customer service is amazing, whereas I’ve had nothing but trouble with other online furniture purchases. And thirdly, while RH is pricey, their perpetual sale is very good and I’ve purchased several discontinued pieces at deep discounts.
Agreed about not sitting on furniture before buying it. That having been said, my local furniture store had me sit on a Smith Brothers sofa and now I wouldn't buy anything else.
100% this. You gotta butt-test anything built for sitting on before you buy it because so many are surprisingly uncomfortable. Particularly the stylish options, since they’re designed for commercial use/to ‘move people along’

I still don't get why people complain about RH furniture - my entire living room is from the RH Outlet and it is the best quality furniture out there. I personally think it was worth it (even at the high outlet prices)!

I really love your video and that you don‘t get on with every design hype. But the Bellini Sofa is actually extremely comfortable and practical. I know because I sold it several times. The idea to be able to assemble your couch every which way you need to whenever you want just by snapping the hooks is very cool. And as long as you’re brave to play with color especially multiple Color’s for one couch you can create an amazing space with it. You have to experience it to know it’s appeal.

In addition to the tacky Hermés blanket, nothing says you are tacky, new money with no taste that probably grew up poor like a table with books on it like CHANEL. I just roll my eyes when I see that, it's like the rich version of those tacky Home Goods signs like FAMILY, LAUNDRY, WELCOME etc. 😂
Also I like the cloud sofa, probably wouldn't buy one but I like it. I love double islands too, if you have big families or lots of friends they actually work well, they are also good for separating kids from adults but keeping everyone in the same room.
Ettore Sottsass is a design legend of the memphis milano movement. I hate how social media has killed this mirror's originality. Most of these 'poser's are using the dupes on ones in hotels. I am a huge memphis fan, so agree the 'trend' needs to go for those who want that style forever!

The ONLY reason I can think of to have double islands, is that one island is the eating area/extra prep space. Or maybe extra storage that can't fit against a wall????? Detest the sofas mentioned, as a person with osteoarthritis, I need a couch that has my hips above my knees when seated... so hard to find today. I do like marble, but in small doses. I pretty much have the same reasons as you for not liking the hermes blanket BUT I did love love love seeing a quick snippet of a chandigarh chair in that segment. I am obsessed with Chandigarh and the idea behind it. That chair is such a beautiful and functional piece. I'm thinking about trying to build my own this summer. It's a shame that something that was originally beautifully utopian for use by municipal workers/students/lecturers and designed to be easy to make and affordable is now so expensive the people who sat in those very chairs likely couldn't ever afford them
I have never understood double kitchen islands. What in the world! Who wants to have to maneuver between 2 islands while cooking! Ridiculous, and in my opinion, it looks awful!
Luxury fashion. I have always held that if I’m going to wear or display something with someone’s name, initials, etc on it - they need to pay me. Not vice versa. Seriously.

I can get behind the double kitchen island if they're utilized differently. Like, if one is more for "business" like cooking, prepping, whatever and the other is for kids doing homework, someone having a snack, socializing, but you want them to be further from the actual cooking--that would make sense to me. The triple island seems like they're just pranking designers at that point.
At least that trend is actually functional. I don’t think anyone ever said “I have too much counter space” 😊
I have double kitchen island. Came with the house 😁. Mostly use the little one for prep the big one is for sitting and decor.
I would love to know what you think about AD’s David Harbor and Lily Allen’s home. It’s ghastly! I loved David’s home from 3 years ago! It was so cozy! He gave up his style entirely for her and they have this double sided Bellini style sofa (may be an actual one). But would love your opinion after watching both of David’s home tours.

I never understood the Hermes blanket. To me it’s a show of status. I’ve never seen the multiple islands before…that is crazy. But then I have a condo (I love) that it the size of most rich people’s kitchens…lol.

I do agree with this cloud sofa and i am sooo over the white and light grey everything in homes .. almost every person has a light grey / white color scheme and it’s soooo boring !! This video is awesome thank you for addressing that sloppy ugly cloud sofa !! It is unstructured and boring !

I love Bauhaus furniture and I saved money for years to be able to afford some essential pieces. I also just recently purchased a Togo chair in a bright color and can’t wait for it to arrive. If I was rich … omg I would spend a huuuuge amount of money on furniture and decor, not gonna lie! But I am not a big fan of interior design trends that showcase big brand names like that Hermes blanket. I love flea market finds and throwing them into the mix and am mostly drawn to places that feel original and personal.
I agree, too much marble is too much marble. It gives movement, but sometimes its too much for the space.

Ultrafragola mirror is one of the nicest designs of Memphis style. Ettore Sotsas was the designer. It's postmodern, and apparently post-postmodernists treat it as a meta text, a prove they have sens of humour, or whatnot. As much as I like it, I agree with your opinion, Nick, it's overplayed.
About that Hermes blanket. Anything with a huge logo on it doesn’t look expensive or classy, on the contrary.
Could you please make a video about how to design rooms with low ceilings? It would be soooo helpful because all the pretty and inspiring pictures are of homes with really beautiful high ceilings!

I saw a video once about research showing what decorative elements cause stress. One of them is jagged lines. Jagged lines certainly make ME uneasy. Granting all that, the bathroom at 7:05 is nightmarish and nerve-jangling (my husband's terms.) Plus that floor will be dangerously slippery. Plus there are no grab bars. Plus the marble will stain. Drop your lipstick and you've got a red spot forever. So this is how the rich live. 2. This may explain the trend towards black lipstick. Drop it in your marble bathroom and no harm.
