Philly native. Been to both recently. Growing up my dad always went to Genos because we were in South Philly. This is a great video because you break the stigma. Yes they are tourist traps but THATS THE POINT. Anyone who visits Philadelphia should definitely visit. And definitely go to Johns RP ; P

I wonder if social media is the only thing keeping places like this alive. Back in the day, historic restaurants that were once good but eventually the food started sucking and/or getting too expensive would just go out of business and would only live on as memories.
Every time someone I know takes their first trip to Philly, they visit these places and post pictures on social media. It's almost "proof" they did indeed go to Philly.

    • @andic8287

The best Philly Cheesesteak in Philadelphia is a toss up between John of Roast Pork, Tony Luke's and D'Alessandros. D'Alesssandros finely dices the steak. The best bread on a Philly Cheesesteak is Tony Luke's. John of Roast Pork uses provolone instead of cheese wiz and surprisingly it tastes better. It's your personal choice but these are the 3 places with the highest ratings for Philly cheesesteak

I love eating a lot of the chilies and peppers. I remember the first time I had a cheesesteak. It almost blew me away! It was a pizza variant. No place special, just a standard mom and pop place in the NE. Pizza, steak, cheese. When did God amend the Book of Genesis? There was also Jim's on South Street, Abner's if you are partying late night at Penn. But you got to eat the peppers like the pickles at Katz's!

Also, from what I've heard, nobody orders regular cheese wiz in Philadelphia (the bright yellow cheese, search 'regular cheese wiz in Philadelphia'). Provolone is definitely the most preferred cheese if choosing between American, Wiz, or Provolone. I also want you to try another cheesesteak place called Steve’s Prince of Steaks, with sharp Provolone cheese and onions, you could also get the double-meat cheese, and Sunshine Sandwich Shop, with 'The Paulie', you can look for the menu on Yelp in one of the reviews there.
@CreedK said in Bon Appétit's video titled "16 Philly Cheesesteaks in 12 Hours. Which Is the Best? | Bon Appétit":
"That Woodrow's house cheese is exactly the kind of thing that more places should be doing. Regular cheese whiz is a perfect pairing for cheesesteaks because of its texture. But let's be real here, it's still a dogshit fake cheese product that has no business being in your digestive system on a regular basis (which is a problem if you like cheesesteaks and cheese fries)."

i agree with you UA. Geno's i thought was very bland with very little cheese flavor. i thought it tasted like straight up steak off the grill. I like mines diced and mixed with cheese for more cheesy flavor. I would like to try angelo's when I come back to visit philly.

When I went to Philly, I wanted to try as many cheese steaks as I could while I was there to find the best one. So over two days I had 14 cheese steak sandwiches. John's Roast Pork has the best Cheese Steaks, but in the Geno's vs Pats; I'd say Pats had the better sandwich. Geno's in my opinion goes heavy on the cheese, and it overpowers everything else in the sandwich. Main complaint for Pats is it needs more salt. If you want the best though Johns Roast Pork. Not only does it taste better, but the roll is like twice the length of Geno or Pats, and it's well over 4x the steak.

Both Pats and Genos are what I would call “a traditional Philly Steak”… I grew up eating their sandwich’s in the late 70s and they are still consistent today.

I agree with your review on every point. Pat's & Geno's are fine, but not great. I take visitors to try both places. It's a fun people watching thing to do and they usually know Pat's and Geno from the Food Channel or whatever. Pat's is the better of the two; Geno's really is consistently drier than I'd like and I'm not a fan of slab steaks.

I live in Philly I think it all depends on what you want that day. Pat and Gino’s are both pretty good. I can eat either one of these every once in a while they’re pretty good.
