  • In mechanical ventilation, ineffective triggering can occur when a patient fails to initiate a breath due to various factors. Dynamic hyperinflation is one such factor, wherein the lungs do not fully empty during exhalation and have increased residual volume. This condition leads to increased pressure within the lungs (known as auto-PEEP), which can hinder the inspiratory muscles from generating sufficient force to trigger the ventilator. Ineffective triggering can result in respiratory distress, asynchrony, and increased work of breathing.
