Deadass. I think that's why he got so popular. Like people can relate. He keeps it real. This song can be interpreted in so many different ways. Not just a song calling out for lack of freedom of speech but for any protest against anything of injustice. The message still resonates is different circumstances.
This is brilliant beyond compare.. He touched on every controversial issue you could of thought in the early 2000s and had a very disturbing yet dope beat... I think Eminem crossed over into shock rock territory with this one... I mean this is frickin brilliant! He knew exactly what he was doing and knew how to brew a controversy... Loved it at the time but the lyrics are that much more brilliant 20 years later!
"Surely hip hop was never a problem in Harlem only in Boston After it bothered the fathers of daughters starting to blossom" Pretty much sums up the message of this song
lol... what both sides? We have right wing... and righter. It's all about that money. If you're talking about "liberals", they just happen to be on the left side of OUR politisphere. Anywhere else, they're reactionary right wingers, too.
White America, Mosh & Sing for the moment were reflections of life, politics & pop culture in the 2ks that still ring true today. Ems one of the most profound & impactful artists in history 🐐
It is true that its in a better place from back then . but still . its still corrupt . why would he even bother to explain . just look at this year campaign lol . Well at least you're right at one point . we don't have planes flying onto buildings no more.
Notice how at 5:47 his parents don’t hold him by the hands but by the wrist as if his parents wanted to stop him from doing bad things in public, if they were holding hands they would show they « love » each other, it’s all « fake » happiness, he’s so smart
Beautiful. His rise was against hypocrisy by parents who weren’t saints. They neglect their children who end up misbehaving. Once Em gives them an articulate reason for their anger the parents blame Em and Marilyn Manson
He was going through it. It's not prophetic. The government wanted to make it tougher for him to sell things and reach kids. They didn't want him on tv at certain times because they were afraid he was going to be vulgar on live tv but he sold so networks took his side.
@8 c He's slowly becoming a culture vulture like Madonna and the other bigger name artists unfortunately....He was against Government back then and now he's pro-old guard government...
@Bird Are you trying to rhyme your response? Do you do that often when commenting? I pointed out the negative change he has made, he has gone political, not against it like he once did but now he goes along with it....if that is becoming "immortal" then Ill pass...
Is this song really about censorship? It sounds more like a song about the hypocrisy of white people in America. I dont find any mentions of censorship in the song. I might be wrong. So feel free to correct me.

I love Eminem. He was my pain reliever and helped me when my best friend, daughter, and aunt died. He was my savior back in the day and I hope Eminem see this. Thank you so much for what you have done for me without even knowing💕💕
@Why So Serious? dont watch the video, don't comment here if you don't like the artist, you are exactly the type of "typical Eminem hater" he describes in his songs.
I think the most humbling and honest part of the song is him admitting he’s only as big as he is because he’s white. He says if he was any other skin color he wouldn’t be that big of a deal. I’ve always respected that the most about him as much as fans try to deny it
This is my fave Em song - it’s an incredible indictment of the early 2000s but also incredibly self aware of WHY he’s so successful: his whiteness makes him both successful and a threat (bringing “scary” black culture to the suburbs via white skin). It’s fkn insane.
Hey kids! This was our Eminem. We grew up to this revolutionary figure and not to the one who is with feat Rihanna or Skylar Grey singing about love and betrayal!
Eminem is a rap legend.... to me because he was talking about things before his time..... he didnt hide anything..dont think anyone imagined we'd be back in the 60's 70's
I disagree with Em on his own shit....(at least on the first album..here me out before the "fuck you's"...lol)....Being a white dude in hip hop at the time most of my white friends wouldn't touch it because of how vanilla fucked everything up....Eminem sold all that he did because he's in the top five best rappers of all time...period....being white did help him....but at the same time he just happened to drop some of the illest shit available...being white didn't work for Bubba Sparx and he had timberland on his side...If he was black he would have sold more on the first album (especially if dre had him on the chronic 2001 and if dre dropped it before the slim shady lp)....and a little more on the second (not counting all the white trl girls that bought his album for looks)....definitely not half the sales (maby a quarter) if a black slim had some Nas skills...;) why do you think the marshall mathers lp out sold the first one...it was safe for whites to give him props...lol....
blacc beard you're people was trying to kick him out of rap fact black didn't want em in the rap game it goes both ways Dr dre said it himself I didn't realise how many racist people was around him black people simple didn't want em in rap everything em has achieved he has deserved for what he had to go through to get where he is is unbelievable
JLjesuslovesyou I think I disagree with you. whites make 70% of the population so when white people saw em in a genre that is mostly black he tapped into a market that other black rappers had a hard time getting into. However there was without a doubt blacks and other minorities who were turned off by the fact that he was white men in hip hop, but overall I don't think his statement was wrong.
Whites do make 70% of the population.....but think about this.....MC Hammer out sold vanilla ice back in 1990-91. Two equally corny ass rappers in my opinion. Every white kid from the Bronx to Utah Mormon kids had his album...Other black rappers had a hard time because of content mostly (non relatable to whites)...don't get me wrong racism exists, but not on the level that the government would like you to believe ( that's another story for another time)
Dear Eminem, thank you for being around when I grew up to be such a rebellious kid thinking I was cool. I will forever miss your wild side, old style. As the years went on I realise that the fire cannot reignite the same, we are more mature now and experience life differently. All your songs have been master-pieces and are to be listened to forever as they are timeless.
I am an gay upper middle class sheltered man who grew up in the 90s. When I was younger Eminem scared me and made me uncomfortable. In 2024 I’m so proud of him and I think his voice is needed more than ever.
um.... uhh... wut? First off, the censoring from Vevo was supposed to be family friendly so they could be more widespread and be able to be played at any venue (for example schools). second the comment was directed at the fact that they had an "explicit content" label at the beginning of the video. (i.e. this song has swear words/lyrics not appropriate for all ages.) meaning they had full rights to publish the song with all original lyrics.
snowmanak1 in germany we have no censorship even if it is supposed to be watched or listened to by children. If it is only for children there just does nobody swear and if its for everyone the lyrics are very empty of swear words. And if it is for adults or at least teenagers they swear like normal people or sometimes even more (eg german rap is full of swearing. And german movies just have some, they often say scheiße what can be translated as shit. You would say fuck. It is not a very strong word but it still is a swear word) and nobody censors it
Yes and then out the blue he started catching cases. Eminem fell back for a min cuz the industry was messing with his career. At one point he gained weight. Then all of a sudden a new Eminem that raps different emerges
The third verse of this song is my favorite verse in hip-hop history. I’m a white guy who was a 12 year old boy when this song came out. Every word he says is EXACTLY how it felt.
@@lyndseywilson2442 THAT is the the point of the song they should and they arnt not matter what you think? I'm white and I can handle being told my people have put on a shit show for many people of color in this country and others.

I remember listening to this entire album on repeat in the car on a summer vacation in Florida. Even with my mom and dad. Idk how my parents let me and my siblings listen to this at 8 years old but I’m sure glad they did.
Eminem as Ruler of D12 is paying tribute Eric Harris the Columbine shooter which is scary. Eric didn't like hip hop he wasn't a fan of rap if he were alive when this song dropped he wouldn't become a Eminem fan same for Dylan Klebold although this has nothing to do with Dylan I'm only saying this because it's the truth Eminem stood by the 1999 Columbine shooting.
as a current 9 year old [Eminem is the one rapper I like] I can say, this is my only information and inspiration about rap, so thats why my songs are so similar to eminem
There are normally 2 versions for a song or an album, one is explicit with proper "Parental Advisory" warning, etc, and the other one which is "clean" - to be freely sold without any markings and "suitable" for underage people. Something like that, sometimes companies tend to roll with "censored" versions for the sake of avoiding restrictions to distribution. Luckily this censorship is only beeping the obvious stuff out. The message gets through regardless. Praise the beeps.
love this song but this music video is one of my favorite. it has that surreal early 2000s video game like animation. so creepy and nostalgic i love it
This song is very intelligent it shows that eminem understands the advantage he has being a white rapper and how it's made him a bigger success but at the same time thats not his fault so he's just doing his thing as he would regardless of peoples reactions - complete and utter awareness superb (although I wish he didn't bring out a song called rap god which contradicts this)
You dumb fuck this is about rich and suburban privilege not "white" privilege Eminem grew up in Detroit in an all black neighborhood for fucks sake he didn't have whatever the fuck "white" privilege is
This Account selling his soul to the mainstream? Are you fucking kidding me? You know how much he insulted bill clinton (dem) when he was elected? Eminem isnt libreal or conservative hes whatever the fuck he is and hes passionate about it stop trying to label him on a side of your political war.
+John Gustafson yeah, my favourite country in America is Brazil. There are many beautiful countries in America and then there is usa, country of corrupted fat capitalists sons of b*****
For all of you thinking "who the fuck is Eric" he was responsible for the Columbine shooting. then the media started blaming Eminem saying that his lyrics provoked violence in teens.
Nope this song is about America (as you are aware). amERICa. That's why he says Eric. He also says Erica because... amERICA. It's not about Columbine. It's simply that the names Eric and Erica can be found within the word America. Also, they didn't blame Eminem for what happened at Columbine; Marilyn Manson's music was the target of the media and public's hate as well as the scapegoat to explain Harris and Klebold's actions. Furthermore, Columbine happened on the 20th of April 1999. Eminem's first studio album came out on the 23rd February 1999. This meant Eminem had only become known to the public probably a month before Columbine. Being that Eminem's music was only available to listen two a month or so before the shooting (and being that Dylan and Eric had been planning the massacre for well over a year), people were not stupid enough to think that Eminem's music had any influence on Columbine. It was also known the two shooters, especially the mastermind Eric, despised rap music.
Reb H he was always in the news at the start of his career for his controversial songs and lyrics thats what this song is about so the original comment still wins

I love Eminem because he's really keeps it real. He's not a fake person. He's real. I have nothing but love and respect for him.
Authenticity matters. America proved that last week after it was a very open question .
Deadass. I think that's why he got so popular. Like people can relate. He keeps it real. While a lot of these other rappers just rap about some bullshit that people forget about, Eminem is timeless because he speaks about his life and doesn't care what people think. This song can be interpreted in so many different ways. Not just a song calling out for lack of freedom of speech but for any protest against anything of injustice. The message still resonates is different circumstances.
I'm sure that I interepted it differently the first time I listened too
This is brilliant beyond compare..

This is my fave Em song - it’s an incredible indictment of the early 2000s but also incredibly self aware of WHY he’s so successful: his whiteness makes him both successful and a threat (bringing “scary” black culture to the suburbs via white skin). It’s fkn insane.
Well put together explanation,THANK YOU .

"If i was black i would've sold half" Realest shit Em ever said, cause it's truest shit he ever said.
Now In 2017 Jake Paul Is considered a rapper

Also because they want the advertisements to be able to run. Some advertising companies can't take shit.

Ain't that typical of an american to say something like that...
